Sending SMS Messages from Jailbroken iPad 3G [Video]

Here comes one of the expected development for jailbroken iPad 3G. iPhone dev Team has succeeded in sending SMS Text messages from iPad 3G. The iPad 3G shown in the video below is jailbroken (of course with Spirit Jailbreak) and Musclenerd is sending SMS messages from iPad using a raw AT+CMGS command sent to the iPad Baseband.

Video after the jump…

sms ipad 3gThe iPad is using a T-Mobile SIM cut down to the size of a microSIM and sending message through its baseband (no GUI). This requires a SIM with SMS Plan.

According to Musclenerd, the iPhoneSMS.app does not work properly on iPad for now and the AT&T plan attached to the SIM that came with iPad 3G is not allowing SMS messaging.

Here’s a clear screenshot of what he sent in SMS message from iPad:

This shows the potential of a jailbroken iPad 3G. We had talked about this possibility along with the possibility of making phone calls from iPad 3G. May be the calling from iPad 3G is next…

Spirit to jailbreak iPad will be out soon. So, stay tuned for more on the iPad jailbreak. Mean while, we recommend you to save SHSH blobs for iPad 3.2 using Firmware Umbrella or AutoSHSH.

Jailbreaking is unnecessary to use SMS messaging to cell partners between the Apple iPad 3G and any cell partner. As this hack demonstrates, it was able to only send an SMS from a stored Text File, and it wasn’t shown that any utility to receive one.
Any Ipad, computer whatever, can interact using the SMS email gateway. Compose your email and address it the phone number of the iPad 3G as phonenumber@txt.att.net, where phone number is the 10 digit number assigned to the iPad 3G. In reverse, just hit reply, and the text will respond to the SMS orginator.
