Messages on iCloud
It has been a long-wait since June 2017 when Apple introduced the Messages on iCloud feature. The feature actually debuted in the beta version of iOS 11.3, but Apple removed it from the final release of iOS 11.3 which was released around a week ago possibly because it was very buggy.
With this new feature, you will be able to save all your iMessages in your iCloud account. Only the latest iMessages will appear on your device and as you’d scroll up or search something, you’ll be able to find the entire archive as well. Apple claims that this would help iPhone users in saving about 4-8GB of storage on their device without having to delete anything. This will also make the transfer of iMessages from older iPhone to a newer one very convenient.
Once you have upgraded to iOS 11.4, upon opening the Messages app, you will get a splash screen asking you to enable iMessages in iCloud. The feature depends on 2-factor authentication. Once the feature is enabled, you will see a progress bar at the bottom of your Messages app for your upload.
AirPlay 2 Multi-Room Support
Another new feature of iOS 11.4 is the inclusion of AirPlay 2. With the multi-room playback feature of AirPlay 2, the user can output the same audio to different devices in his/her home. For instance, you have a HomePod, and two Apple TVs connected to stereo speakers in different rooms. With iOS 11.4, you can blast music on all three devices at the same time using your iPhone.
Stereo Support for HomePod
iOS 11.4 features also include stereo support for the HomePod smart speaker. It means you can create a stereo pair of HomePods by adding another one. However, the feature won’t work properly until Apple enables the same feature for HomePod software as well.
What else to Expect?
iOS 11.4 will most probably be the last major update for the iOS 11as we expect Apple to shift its focus towards iOS 12. The company is widely expected to unveil its next generation of the mobile operating system called iOS 12 at Worldwide Developer Conference 2018 that kicks off on June 4.
Other than the above-mentions new iOS 11.4 features, Apple has also promised to push a fix for a privacy bug that allows Siri to read the contents of hidden messages right from the lock screen without unlocking the iPhones.
