CardDAV is an Internet open standard. It manages contact data on a server and uses vCard format for contact data. It allows 3rd party clients such as iOS contacts app to sync with Google contacts. If you sync your Gmail contacts using CardDAV, you’ll be able to edit, add, and remove contacts from your iPhone, iPad and changes will happen across all devices seamlessly.

How to Sync Google Contacts on iOS using CardDAV

If you own an iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch), you can now sync your Google contacts with CardDAV. To setup CardDAV Google Contacts sync on your iOS device, follow these steps:

Go to Settings app on your iOS device;
Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars;
Now choose the Others option;

Now select Add CardDAV Account from the options;
Now input the required details as follows:

  • Server: Enter google.com
  • User Name: Enter your full Google Account or Google Apps email address.
  • Password: Your Google Account or Google Apps password. (If you’ve enabled 2 Step verification, you’ll need to generate and enter an application specific password.)
  • Description: Enter a description of the account (e.g. Google Contacts).

Click the Next button at top-right corner and your account will be added. Now you can open the contacts application and syncing will happen automatically.

Now if you make any changes to your Google contacts, delete it or add a new contact, using the web, will immediately reflect on your iOS device and vice versa.

To make it your default account, go to: Settings app > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, scroll down to the Contacts section, tap Default account and then make your choice.

NOTE: If you’re having problems with the sync, make sure that the Contacts option is turned ON. CardDAV syncing is only available over SSL connection so enable it by going to: Settings app > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Your CardDAV account and make sure that the Account option is turned to ON, then open Advanced Settings and enable SSL. For Google Apps for Business users, Google is recommending using Google Sync to sync your iOS contacts.
