Google Pixel 3 / XL Features

Here is a detailed rundown of all the new features of Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL.

Design

The back of both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are completely covered with glass. However, there is a two-tone finish. Google has left the top section of the back untouched, while the rest of the glass on the back has been given a metallic touch similar to the one found in the previous model. This metallic touch may lead many people into thinking that it is not glass.

The Pixel XL 3 features a notch on the front while the Pixel 3 does not have it. Other than that the overall exterior of both devices is almost identical. The fingerprint scanner is on the back, no headphone jack, stereo front-facing speaker, USB Type-C. Both variants are available in Clearly White, Just Black, and Not Pink color options.

Display

On the front, the larger Pixel 3 XL features a 6.3-inch P-OLED QHD+ display with a notch and 19:9 ratio. It is worth mentioning here that Google had poked fun at Apple when iPhone X was released with a notch design, now they themselves have introduced it in the Pixel 3 XL. The notch on the Pixel 3 XL is pretty thick and bigger than what you’d find on other Android devices. Google, however, has used that space wisely by housing a speaker and dual lens camera module.

The smaller Pixel 3 features a 5.45-inch FHD+ OLED display OLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The smaller variant does not feature a notch and its bezels are noticeably thinner than its predecessor.

Hardware

Both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset. It is clocked at 2.8GHz. Both devices feature 4GB RAM, comes in 64GB/12GB storage options. The larger Pixel 3 XL has a 3430mAh battery, while the smaller sibling comes with 2915mAh battery. Both devices support 10W Qi wireless charging.

Camera

The rear camera on the back of Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL remains largely unchanged when compared to Pixel 2. Both new devices feature a 12.2MP rear shooter with 1.4um large pixel, OIS and f/1.8 aperture.

On the front side, Google has added a dual 8MP camera setup. One of these selfie cameras is a regular one, while the other has a wide angle lens allowing its users to capture 184% more selfie area than the iPhone XS.

Google has further improved its HDR+ algorithm which means these new devices will be able to capture more stunning photos. The Pixel Visual Core is responsible for handling all the HDR+ related tasks which make the process notably faster.

Google has also improved its camera app on Pixel 3 making it easier to use, faster to open and use, and switching between modes made faster. There are plenty of AI features added to the app such as Top Shot that selects a picture in which your eyes are not closed or the perfect moment you wanted to capture.

The Night Sight feature uses machine learning to capture stunning photos in low light conditions. Google will make this feature live for Pixel 3 and older devices in the coming month. Google has renamed AR Stickers to Playground and has added numerous new characters that Android users can add to their photos and videos.

Software

Both Pixel 3 devices are running on Android 9.0 Pie. Any future Android update will be first pushed to Pixel devices, while the likes of Samsung takes months to push that update to their devices. Google has added a custom Titan M security chip to provide better device security. An exclusive Call Screening feature will automatically answer a suspected spam call and ask the caller who they are and transcribe the call, all without the need of an internet connection.
