Fix iOS 9 update stuck at ‘Slide to Upgrade’ screen [How to]

Apple released iOS 9 software update on Wednesday, and in all fairness, the release of this major firmware was not as troublesome as some of the past updates have been. Still, with iOS 9, the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users encountered some of the errors including “Software Update Failed” error that appeared when trying to update to iOS 9 Over-the-Air (OTA). Based on a thread posted on Apple Support Communities, some users also encountered an issue where the iOS 9 update gets stuck at “Slide to Upgrade” screen. If you are experiencing the “Slide to Upgrade” issue, keep on reading to fix it.

While the number of users getting stuck on “Slide to Upgrade” are not in droves, it still is an issue and has the potential to affect any user trying to upgrade to iOS 9. Fortunately, the issue is pretty easy to fix, all you need to do to fix getting stuck at “Slide to Upgrade” screen is to restore your device from iTunes backup.

Please note that the fix requires you to have a local iTunes backup of your device. So make sure to backup your device using iTunes. The iCloud backup won’t be of any help here.

Disable ‘Find My iPhone’ or the fix won’t work.

Fix iOS 9 update getting stuck at ‘Slide to Upgrade’

  1. Connect your device, which is stuck at ‘Slide to Upgrade’ screen, to your computer through USB cable.
  2. Fire up the latest version of iTunes.
  3. Click on the device icon at the top-left side of the iTunes.
If the iTunes has not detected the device due to its installation state, then you need to force reboot it by pressing and holding the Home + Power buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
  4. Under Summary, click on the Restore Backup button and select your iTunes backup. If you do not have a backup, then take a backup with iTunes first and then restore.

While the issue has not hit the masses, still Apple has published an official support document enlisting the steps required to fix the stuck at ‘Slide to Upgrade’ screen. Hopefully, this workaround fixes the issue for you. Apple has promised to address the bug in an upcoming firmware update.
