New iOS bug instantly crashes an iPhone with a Text Message

A recent bug found in Apple’s mobile OS: iOS, allows anyone to effectively crash an iPhone, or send it into Safe Mode (if jailbroken), by simply sending a string of non-Latin characters as an SMS or iMessage. The bug that involves an SMS or iMessage containing a specific string of symbols or Arabic character to make the crash happen, was first discovered by a number of keen-eyed Reddit users.

Sending a specific string of Arabic characters and symbols, through SMS or iMessage, causes the iPhone to immediately respring, crash and quickly reboot. From there, the Messages app crashes in list view, however, it opens up if the conversation where you received the message was opened, but attempting to go to another conversation causes Messages app to crash.

Since the discovery of this rather bizarre and difficult to find bug, it is spreading like a wild fire around the globe and individuals attempting to hang or crash the iPhones of their family and friends. And since Apple’s other device such as iPod Touch and iPad also runs on iOS, users of those device might as well be affected from the same bug through native Messages app.

Here are some of the key facts related to this bug, posted by that_c00l_kid a Reddit user:

In a brief but official statement, Apple told iMore that they are aware of the issue and they’ll be pushing a fix in a software update:

We are aware of an iMessage issue caused by a specific series of unicode characters and we will make a fix available in a software update.

In the meantime, if you encounter message that causes your iPhone to crash, it’s highly likely that someone is playing a prank on you.
