How to Install iOS 8 beta on iPhone and iPad

Apple announced iOS 8 during the keynote at WWDC 2014 on Monday. iOS 8 comes with a host of new features including interactive notifications, Quicktype, widgets, and much more. You can download iOS 8 beta 1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch from the iOS Dev Center if you’re a registered iOS developer. If you’re enrolled in Apple’s iOS Dev Center and want to install iOS 8 beta on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, simply follow the detailed instructions below…

  • Backup your personal data via iTunes or iCloud before installing iOS 8 beta
  • Beta versions usually come with unexpected bugs, so proceed at your own risk.
  • This guide assumes that you’ve a register IOS Dev Center account. If not, you can enroll into the developers program for $99/year.
  • Make sure that you’ve latest version of iTunes installed.

Now to install iOS 8 beta on your iOS device, these are the steps:

Add UDID to Dev Account

The first step is to add your device’s UDID into your developers account to assign the device for development and testing purpose. It’s important because without it, you won’t be able to activate your device on iOS 8 beta. To do that:

  1. Login to your iOS Dev Center account.
  2. Click on “Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles” on the top-right of the sidebar.
  3. Select Devices from the left pane.
  4. To add your device, click on the + button.
  5. Now enter you device’s UDID, which is a 40 hex character string. To find UDID:
  6. Connect your device to your computer and launch iTunes.
  7. Under the devices sections, select your connected device and then go to the Summary tab.
  8. Click on the Serial number label, which will show the 40 hex character UDID. Right click on the UDID and then click on Copy Identifier (UDID). Now paste it in the iOS Dev Center.
  9. Once you’ve entered the name and the UDID of your device, click Continue button.
  10. Review the details and click Register button, followed by Done to successfully add your device to your dev account.

Download iOS 8 Beta

In iOS Dev Center, go to the iOS 8 Beta tab and download the beta software for your device. Alternatively, We’ve a dedicated page to download iOS 8 beta 1 with direct download links. Please note that you’d need iOS Dev account to download iOS 8 beta from those download links.

Extract the .ipsw file from the downloaded .zip file.

Install iOS 8 Beta

  1. Simply follow these steps to install iOS 8 beta on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch using iTunes:
  2. Connect your device to your computer and launch iTunes.
  3. Select your iOS device from the top-right side and then go to the Summary tab.
  4. Hold down the Shift key (Windows) or Option key (Mac) and click the Update button.
  5. Browse and select the downloaded .IPSW file and open it.
  6. Click Ok if iTunes prompt about the device going to be updated.
  7. Swipe ‘Slide to upgrade’ to proceed. Once the upgrade process has been completed, follow the in-screen instructions to setup your device.
  8. That’s it! You’ve successfully installed iOS 8 beta on your iOS device.
