Gevey SIM Interposer Unlock iPhone 4 on 02.10.04, 03.10.01 Baseband

Gevey SIM Interposer Unlocks iPhone 4 on 02.10.04, 03.10.01 Baseband [Video]

The Gevey team introduces Gevey SIM Interposer, a small chip to unlock iPhone 4 on 02.10.04, 03.10.01 Baseband. This reminds me of the good old TurboSIM days, a popular method for unlocking iPhone 2G in 2008.2.

Gevey SIM Interposer can unlock iPhone 4 up to iOS 4.3. It forces the iPhone 4 baseband activation using the emergency dialer which is vulnerable up to iOS 4.3. This is how it works: Just like the TuboSIM, an EEPROM chip is added to your SIM card, then call 112 from the Emergency Dialer screen and hang up once the call is connected, toggle Airplane mode ON and OFF, You’ll be unlocked as soon as the network connection resumes.

MuscleNerd finds Gevey SIM Interposer Unlocking method interesting however, its legality is still questionable.

Laforet of Singularity Blog has detailed how the SIM interposer works:

How did It Work?

SIM card holds many different types of information, but the part most involved with carrier lock is the IMSI number, which is a unique code that corresponds to your account in the mobile carrier’s database.

A sample IMSI might look like this

310 150 987654321

The first two segments are known as Mobile Country Code (MCC) and Mobile Network Code (MNC) respectively, and in the example above the IMSI indicate the SIM is from USA (310) AT&T (150).

When the iPhone baseband is loaded into memory, it checks the MCC and MNC against its own network lock state stored in the seczone. If the combination is allowed, the cell radio is activated and vice versa.

The earliest iPhone baseband revisions only check IMSI twice following a restart, therefore it is very easy to send spoof information in order to bypass the check. Nevertheless, the baseband was soon updated to validate SIM more aggressively and the method soon became obsolete.

What does it mean to unlockers?

  1. It works if A.your network handles 112 calls properly according to the GSM standard; B.they are tolerant to TSMI spoofing and does not actively validate your SIM again for incoming calls.
  2. Unlike its ancestors, the i4 SIM interposer is not a drop-in-and-forget device. The exact precedure must be performed should the device restart, lose reception for an extended period of time or move to another PLMN. In all situations the TMSI expires and has to be obtained again. Theoretically it is possible for a daemon to automate the process similar to ZeroG, but that only makes thing more convoluted.
  3. It is, without question, unethical or downright illegal to use the technique anywhere 112 is a legitmate emergency number. Not a huge issue in China where the number is only used for informative purpose; the providers has no immediate incentive to fix the loophole.
  4. All firmware/baseband combinations for the i4 up to iOS4.3 are vulnerable, however the exploit may be patched in any future software updates or via the carrier. If apple can influence providers to block Cydia it is not impossible for them to press them to fix the exploit. The only way to permanently unlock your baseband is via NCK.
  5. SIM interposer should not harm your phone hardware, however your network could request IMEI and identify your device during the emergency call. Your identity cannot be faked and it is possible that they will ban your account. There is a reason why SIM cards remain legally the property of the service provider: you are not supposed to tamper with them without breaching contract.
  6. Notwithstanding all the problems, SIM interposer does not cause any battery drain since it is only active transiently, nor would it cause signal loss because it does not change cellular transmission other than the initial validation step.

Can’t wait for UltraSn0w or any other software unlock for iPhone 4? Gevey SIM Interposer may be a possible solution. However, questionable legal status we won’t recommend it. Better wait for an UltraSn0w or a new software unlock solution.

This unlock sounds like a tethered jailbreak version, once you restart your idevice you need to do something first to boot up-unlocked.. I hope ultrasn0w update shall be released so that there will be more options..

sowat99 March 18, 2011, 10:54 am

And since this a HARDWARE related unlock, THIS is not free.. You need to pay for this hardware sim device for at least US$75! OMG!

I got mine for $19.95 – much cheaper than the $75.00 it is from some of these places that seem to like to gouge on this sucker. http://www.modchipstore.com/iphone-4-unlock-16490.html

Sounds like a tethered unlock to me. Too bad you have to pay that much for it. I’ve been waiting for an unlock since December. I’m probably gonna sell my iPhone 4.

GIo March 19, 2011, 11:43 am

i was selling my iphone 4 for 400usd but its useless, everyone wants unlocked iphone, interesting how long we have to wait for the updated ultrasnow:S

Kaizoku March 19, 2011, 4:11 pm

Just order a factory unlock overseas, save all the trouble.

sowat99 March 19, 2011, 4:51 pm

That is a nice point there my friend but, if you will do that, the risks are, you need to pay the FULL price of that overseas unlocked unit which is about like US$600, shipping still not included in that price, and another downside is when you ship it, you will be afraid it might be damaged during the freight service. Unlike for example I will get an iphone(carrier locked) here in the UK, I can just get the unit by paying a down payment of UK£99 with a contract of UK£30/monthly tariff. So as you can see it is more cheaper to acquire the iphone, then just Jailbreak it and put the ultrasn0w unlock in it. The downside of this acquisition is your baseband must be 01.59.00 iOS 4.0 to 4.0.1. It would be more cheaper this way than to spend more money on factory unlocked iphones.. But of course, factory unlocked is more nice.. Just pay the lump sum upfront.. 😀

Kaizoku March 20, 2011, 7:31 am

You would be paying more for plans in the end. That’s how they get you.

sowat99 March 20, 2011, 2:31 pm

But of course you still need to pay your iphones’s tariffs or pay as you go credits to use it, regardless of it being locked or unlocked, aint it?

Kaizoku March 20, 2011, 10:01 pm

In my country there is special plan for unlocked phones. $1 per month plus 10c per call. Great if u dont make much calls.

Honest March 19, 2011, 5:06 pm

The dev team can’t put its shit together to crack the affected basebands, and it does not look like apple left any hole to break in, so I guess I’m gonna give this a try before selling away my iPhone.

Onir March 20, 2011, 1:20 pm

is it me? or does this thing drain the battery?

hmorad April 2, 2011, 3:32 pm

i got mine.. works great but it drains the battery, plus i’m not sure but my 3G isn’t working

Leeanh April 11, 2011, 2:09 pm

I got mines and i find that it does drain the battery. Wasn’t sure if it was the gevey sim but i didn’t seem to have this issue before.

Sam April 28, 2011, 6:07 pm

Hmm.. Weird. I have not experienced any battery drain (nothing more the usual anyway). I don’t know if it could even drain the battery. Maybe you have something on? Like 3G or Wifi all the time, since the unlock? Check all of your settings, and see if perhaps something is simply left on, that would not have been on before.

I am in Singapore with a iPhone 4 locked to Canada (I DESPISE ROGERS)
I brought it to Lucky Plaza and they tried the software break and it didn’t work.

They stuck a chip in and it works – don’t ask me what else they did.

I canvassed over 50 shops on the phone and in person – only 2 people said they were able to do it.

I went to Dabelectronics on the basement level – talk to Mike the big asian dude – tell him the white chick that was crying sent you. haha. I can’t believe it actually went through I was ready to throw in the towel and they assured me “miss please, we haven’t given up on the phone, have some faith, we are professional” – I’ll admit I lost all faith at the point, as they were working on it for some time, all the stores had closed and I was just chillen doing nothing for 2 hours – but it was done in the end and that’s what counts.
