Download RedSn0w 0.9.6b5: Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 + Update to Baseband 06.15.00

Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 and update baseband to 06.15.00 is out now! You can download RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 for Mac & Windows from the links below. Those iPhone 3GS/3G users stuck with 05.15.04 & 05.14.04 baseband need to update baseband to 06.15.00 which is unlockable.

Dev-Team has already released PwnageTool to do the same thing, however, RedSn0w supports both the Windows and Mac OS and there’s in no need of iPad 3.2.2 firmware in RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 case (atleast for now.)

The new redsn0w 0.9.6beta5 is out.  It gives both Windows and OSX users the ability to flash the iPad 06.15 baseband on iPhone3G or iPhone3GS.  It fetches the baseband files directly from Apple for now (the only IPSW you ever point it at is the stock IPSW for the FW on your iPhone right now).  There may be a long delay while it’s doing this (their servers are currently getting pounded).

If you do flash your baseband via redsn0w, please keep it plugged into USB the whole time.  You don’t want your battery to die during the flash process!

Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b5

  • Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 for Windows [Link 1] [Link 2] (Windows 7 and Vista users, please run redsn0w as Administrator in “XP Compatiblity Mode”)
  • Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 for Mac OSX [Link 1] [Link 2]
  • Download iOS 4.2.1

A detailed guide on how to use RedSn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3GS/3G and update baseband to 06.15.00 to unlock with UltraSn0w 1.2 will be posted shortly.

Do I have to use the OS 4.2.1 or can I stay the 4.1 version. The reason why I am asking is that because my iphone is jailbroken with snowbreeze, if I update to 4.2.1 I am not sure if I will be able to activate it since I do not have and ATT Sim card

john November 30, 2010, 12:10 pm

yes you can stay on 4.1 for this method!! i just did 10 phones today running 4.1 😉

Did you check whether GPS is functioning?

flathullah10 November 30, 2010, 8:06 pm

you need to do nothing

bernek November 30, 2010, 12:45 am

GPS not working after this update I wonder if its the new baseband nobody could tell me anything …

Salmoneus November 30, 2010, 1:16 am

Worked for me, but only after I tried it on my sister’s laptop. For some reasons, everytime i tried it on mine, I got a “redsnow stopped working message” when the jailbreak process started…

This unlock method is not the best one, the reason why I don’t like the fact that we have to update the BB to 6.15.00 and take all the consequences with it, if you read the risk from the Dev Team you will understand it better, this is a trip of no return, anything goes wrong with this BB update you cannot restore your iphone with a stock firmware but only with a custom one, so I want to share my opinion with you don’t do this unless you really need to, for now I will stay away from this method and hopping in the future with a better option.
Some people are already experiencing loosing the Wi-Fi or the GPS after they update the BB to 6.15.00, like I said is not a good method to unlock the iphone stay away from this. That is my opinion.

1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).

I am in agreement with what you have cautioned against, because I stumbled too late on your warning, I have already stupidly done that, or so it appears, because now I am stuck with the apple logo, which I could change into a custom logo when I jailbroke my phone using redsnow. But that is all, after the logo comes up, nothing more happens, totally stuck.Looking for a solution, hope to find one. I don’t mind going back to the Itunes restore, provided my phone gets kicked out of this freeze. I can enter DFU mode of course, that still works! Any ideas are welcome, this is my third day without an iphone!

you can change the firmware from 1.0to 4.2.1 just the baseband doesnt change on modem why would you want it to change any ways there is no need for it to change you can upgrade and down -grade the 6.15 baseband has nothing to do with down-grade im runing 6.15 baseband and 3.2.1 firmware

AfRoO November 30, 2010, 2:16 am

Berge November 30, 2010, 10:28 am

I just did the jailbreak and unlock on my 3G, using PwnageTool 4.1.3 and the 6.15 baseband and UltraSn0w, updating to OS 4.2.1. Everything went well except that it seems the GPS is not working. The native Maps app is REALLY laggy and inaccurate most of the time. When I’m driving for example, it strays off the true path or stays stuck in one place (even though I’m moving) and then after anywhere from 10 to about 30 seconds or so it jumps to the right location and then stays there for a while, until the next jump, etc. I think it’s only working on the basis of the cell tower info and not the actual GPS signal. Ditto with the MapQuest app. Using TomTom is even worse, it never gets a fix on a GPS signal at all. Anyone else have this problem? Also, I think the BlueTooth is not working properly but I haven’t had the time to check this out thoroughly.
@latium – I wish I had read your post before I used this method….

unless I launch RedSn0w, plug the iPhone in and select “just boot tethered” to kick boot my iPhone 3gs.
This is very annoying as it means I have to carry a computer with me.
Anyone resolve this problem
I am not sure if there is a fix for this.thanks

Hello, I am using iPhone 3g running ios fw 4.2.1 and have updated to the ipad BB. My problem is that springboard keeps crashing everytime i try to multitask. I read about the opengles and multitasking switch being broken, etc .. is there any other recent fixes to this problem ? Please advise.

iPhoneHeat December 28, 2011, 3:26 pm

multitasking option on iPhone 3G is NOT recommended.
