New iPhone 3GS Units are Still Jailbreakable, But Needs Tether To Boot

An unfortunate new spread all over the internet that Apple is shipping new iPhone 3GS units having modified boot ROM which means Dev-Team’s jailbreak exploit, 24kpwn would not work on these new devices.

Eric McDonald, a member of The Dev-Team told Wired:

It’s not going to be impossible to jailbreak even if the exploit we used is gone.

He said the new iPhone 3GS units are still hackable. The exploit used for previous boot ROM units just made it easier to boot up the jailbroken iPhone 3GS.

The new Boot ROM interferes with the exploit and just make the iPhone boot up difficult after it’s shutdown. New Jailbroken iPhone 3GS requires to be tethered with a computer in order to boot up. So, if you shutdown your iPhone or it ran out of battery then you need to connect it to a computer in order to boot it up.

So, yesterday news was half correct that new iPhone 3GS units are being shipped with new Boot ROM. But half wrong that they are NOT jailbreakable.

Keep in mind that iPod Touch 2G went through a similar upgradation but the great Dev-Team got rid of problem a few weeks later.

This is what Steve Jobs said in Sep 2007:

It’s a cat-and-mouse game. We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it’s our job to stop them breaking in.

It’s clear that the company could not successfully stop hacker from breaking in with latest upgrades. So, hope for a new exploit and a new way from the dependable Dev-Team to get rid of tethered jailbreak in those new units of iPhone 3GS.
