Extend iPhone Battery Life

Paying attention to just a few commonsense pointers will pay off with a longer battery lifespan and battery life for your iPhone. The most important thing is to keep your iPhone out of the sun or a hot car (including the glove box). Heat will degrade your battery’s performance the most.

As an iPhone owner, many of my fiends love to have a quick look at this Apple’s sweet device. There’s no problem with that But my concern is that I can’t lend my iPhone without potentially giving them access to lots of personal data. (Email App, Messages, Contacts, Call history, browser history, etc.)

Unfortunately, even in iPhone 3GS, we can only set a passcode to gain access to iPhone’s home screen but we don’t have App-Specific password protection. I don’t mind passing my phone around at a party to share a YouTube video or funny web site, but you have to keep a close eye on people to make sure they don’t go messing around with things they shouldn’t be. Like I don’t want others to have access to Email App or SMS or Photos.

Once again Thanks to the Jailbreak Community where iPhone users can enjoy the App-Specific password protection. A free iPhone App: LockDown, available in Cydia has the ability to Password protect your desired application on iPhone. LockDown works like a charm on iPhone OS 3.0 and also supports 2.x firmwares as well.

How to Password Protect Applications on iPhone

Let me give you a walk through of LockDown.

How to install LockDown

To install LockDown, you need to jailbreak your iPhone first. Learn how to jailbreak your iPhone:

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS

Jailbreak iPhone 3G

Jailbreak iPhone 2G

Once you have jailbroken your iPhone. You’ll got a Cydia icon on your SpringBoard.

Launch the Cydia.

Go to Search Tab and search for Lock Down and tap it.

Tap Install button at Top-Right and then Confirm button at Top-Right to begin installation.

After completion, go back to Springboard where you’ll find a brand new icon i.e. LockDown.

How to use LockDown

When you will run the Lockdown application for the first time, you will be asked to setup a Safety Code and a Password. This password will be used to unlock any locked application and to open Lockdown itself. Safety code is useful in case you forget your LockDown password.

Once you have setup the Password and safety code, you will see all your iPhone applications listed on next screen.

Select any application you want to lock, a Lock button will appear. By tapping that button your selected application will be locked and a little lock icon will appear next to that locked application.

Now if you close LockDown App and try to open you locked application (Mail app in this example), you will be prompted to enter the password to open it. Use your Lockdown password to open that App.

(Once you open the app, use it and when you close the app it will be automatically locked again. So no need to re-lock it in LockDown.)

I am using this great application since the day it’s supported with iPhone OS 3.0. It’s working like a charm and will keep it installed because of its usefulness and surely recommend it.

In-App Purchasing

Some applications allow you to make purchases within the application. For example, an eBook application can have a bunch of books displayed, and allow you to purchase whichever one you’d like right from within the app. Purchasing new Level with a game is another example.

Peer-to-Peer Connectivity

You will be able to find other devices running the same app as you via Bonjour over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Imagine you are sitting in an airport, and you want to play chess. You open the chess game, find another user, and have a real-live chess game with some other iPhone user in the airport. Peer-to-Peer connectivity will also be used to allow some data sharing in applications.

Purchasing and Downloading Content from the iTunes Store to iPhone over 3G Network (no size limit)

You can use the iTunes Store on iPhone to purchase and download songs, albums, TV shows, movies, music videos, and audiobooks directly to iPhone within any need of Wi-Fi connection. You can also stream and download audio and video podcasts.

Remember parents, new movies cost 15$ a pop so you better use parental controls if your kid has an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Turn By Turn Navigation

Full turn-by-turn navigation is now available to developers to implement into their applications. Developers could have done this before but a legal clause by Apple restraint them from working on Turn-by-Turn navigation. However, the clause is dropped now.TomTom, the famous GPS company, presented their app at the WWDC, and it looks great. They even created a car attachment kit (that charges your iPhone too.) Check out the video they created:

Playback audiobooks in variable speeds

Now, in iPhone OS 3.0, you can increase that play-back speed of a audiobook. A nice feature indeed, for all those speed listeners out there.

Calls from non-contacts shows city and State/Country

Calls from unknown/non-contact numbers will show the city and stat/country to give an idea that where the call came from. Details will be listed under Recents and Voicemail directly under the phone number.

Album Art Displayed While Charging (instead of battery logo)

Part of the iPhone’s appeal is it’s attractive design, and when you’re having a party, you want things to look good. If you have an iPod Dock that plays iPhone music and charges it at the same time, you might have noticed that the stylish album artwork disappears, and the green/red battery logo appears. Now, with 3.0, even if the phone is charging, the display will continue to show the album artwork.

Many of the Canadian iPhone users are facing the timestamps within Mail and World Clock mismatch problem. A Canadian iPhone blogger has posted solution to this problem after fixing it with his iPhone.

I immediately assumed it was a Rogers 3G network error or possibly Gmail. After asking a few of my friends with iPhones, and receiving some tips from you guys out there (thanks Dan!), there is an easy fix to this.

I’ve also been experiencing the sudden loss of 3G in areas that normally get excellent reception. I would be baffled as to why the “E” would appear in the corner instead of the “3G”. Rogers must be either testing their 3G networks, or maybe they are exceeding capacity in Vancouver.

How to Fix the Rogers 3G Time/Date Error

1. Go to Settings–>General–>Date & Time–>toggle Set Automatically to OFF
2. Time Zone–>Vancouver; Set the real time (or whatever the “time” is in your fantasy world).

or

3. Turn off 3G (if you desperately need the correct date and time.

Are you experiencing any Date & Time issues with your iPhone on Rogers/Fido? I’d love to hear how many people this is affecting.

You may have already experienced that while running an iPhone application, it just stops responding and your iPhone hangs there. Most of the iPhone users try to hold down the Home button to reset the phone but it doesn’t work.

Such problem occurs frequently when more iPhone applications are installed. Most of the experienced iPhone users may already know what to do in such situation but what a beginner iPhone user should do? How he/she can reset his/her iPhone when it’s hung?

Simple! You just need to hard reset your iPhone. However, note that resetting the iPhone is not like restoring the iPhone. Restore will erase and wipe out completely all information and data in the device, including songs, musics, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, call lists, applications installed, any other data. All iPhone settings are restored to factory defaults. Hard Resetting iPhone is simply a forced reboot, where power is cut off from iPhone to restart it from fresh.

To hard reset your iPhone, just press and hold the both Home button and Power/Sleep button at the top, simultaneously. Hold them (usually for 10 seconds) until you see black screen with Apple logo. Now, Let go the both buttons at the same time and your iPhone will restart and work as normal.
