How to Install Custom iOS 4.0

1. Download custom firmware (IPSW) (all parts) for your device from links below.
2. Join the splitted custom IPSW file by unpacking them:
   • Mac Users: use BetterZip ( or what ever you want )
   • Windows Users: use HJSplit ( or what ever you want)
3. You’ll get a .zip or .rar file. extracting the zip/rar file will bring the IPSW custom firmware.
4. Put iPhone in recovery mode. (How to: put iPhone into Recovery Mode) First time jailbreakers should put their Device into DFU Mode.
5. Press the Shift key for Windows or ALT for Mac and click restore and use the custom IPSW.
6. It will start restoring your iPhone/iPod Touch which may take 10mins and will jailbreak it.
7. iPhone 3GS and 3G users who want to unlock iPhone needs to install UltraSn0w using following guide:

This is what error reads:

The iPhone “-” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (16xx).

To get rid of error 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604 or 29 during custom firmware restore follow the steps mentioned below.

Fix 16xx and 29 error During Custom Firmware Restore

We are listing all the possible fixes for 16.04, 16xx error when restoring a custom firmware below. Please read it first before trying.

Solution 1

I encountered 1604 error just once back in OS 3.1.2 days. Trying on another PC helped me in successfully restoring the CFW. So, if you have another PC or Mac, I suggest you to try on that computer first.

Solution 2

• Make sure to show hidden files under your folder options.
• Close the iTunes and disconnect your iDevice from your Computer.
• Go to the following directory:
  Win 7 & Vista Users:
  C:Users\*UsersName*\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\Device Support
  Windows XP :
  C:\Documents and Settings\*UserName*\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\Device Support or iPhone Software Updates
• Backup the files available in the folder and delete them from that folder.
• Put your iPhone into Recover Mode. and Restore the Custom firmware.

Solution 3

iPhone 3G, 2G and iPod Touch 1G, iPod Touch 2G users running OS 3.1.2 can use a handy little utility named iREB (iTunes Restore Error Bypasser) to get rid of error 16xx or 29:

1. Download iREB
2. Start iTunes and put your iPhone into DFU mode:

3. Now close iTunes and Start iREB on your PC.
4. Select your device and wait for a few seconds till you get white or a red screen on your iPhone.
   
5. Open iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore”  button in the iTunes. Select a custom firmware .ipsw file and restore it. Your 16xx or 29 errors are gone.

Please note that iREB is NOT a jailbreaking utility but it aids in jailbreaking iPhone or iPod Touch.

Solution 4

You may also try:

• Update your iTunes to latest version.
• Try again..
• Also try killing iTunes process in Task manager and iPod services after the error occurs. Reopen iTunes and try again..
• Try changing the USB port the or on another system.

Create the Custom IPSW file with Sn0wBreeze and jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2.

PREREQUISITES

• Download iTunes 9.0.2
• Download iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware for your iDevice
• Download Sn0wbreeze (Windows only)
• Download .NET Framework 3.5 (required to run Sn0wbreeze)

Put the iPhone firmware 3.1.2 and Sn0wBreeze into a folder on your desktop. Install the downloaded iTunes and .NET Framework 3.5. Now you can proceed.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 with Sn0wBreeze

Step 1
Make sure you’ve installed the latest version of iTunes. Open the iTunes and backup your iPhone data.

Step 2
Run the Sn0wBreeze and hit next button.

Step 3
choose Simple Mode. We cannot get Expert Mode work properly because it’s still in beta. So only Simple Mode is available.
Click the Next Arrow button.

Step 4
Sn0wBreeze will ask for the IPSW file for your iDevice. Click on the Browse button and navigate to the folder where you put your iPhone OS 3.1.2 IPSW file and choose the downloaded firmware 3.1.2.

Sn0wBreeze will verify your selected firmware 3.1.2 file.
Hit Next.

Step 5
On the next screen, Sn0wBreeze will ask you: Do you want to activate your iPhone?

• Hit Yes button for hacktivation (for unofficial carriers)
• Hit No if you want to use official carrier (AT&T etc).

Step 6
Hit the Start button. SnowBreeze will start building custom firmware for your iPhone that we will use later to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.2.

Step 7
Once the custom IPSW file building process is complete, now it’s time to restore your iPhone with that custom firmware that you just built using Sn0wBreeze.

Connect your iPhone to iTunes and select your iPhone from the left navigation pane in iTunes. Hold Down the SHIFT key on your keyboard and hit the Restore button (SHIFT + Restore)

Step 8
Now the iTunes will ask for the IPSW firmware file.
Browse to the custom firmware that you built using Sn0wBreeze and select it.

iTunes will Restore your iPhone with custom iPhone OS 3.1.2 created with Sn0wBreeze. Once the iTunes is done with the restore process, your iPhone will restart automatically.

Voila! you’ve a fully jailbroken iPhone with OS 3.1.2.

How to Unlock iPhone OS 3.1.2

Now after jailbreaking iPhone, if you want to unlock iPhone OS 3.1.2, you can use UltraSn0w to unlock iPhone 3.1.2 or use BlackSn0w to unlock iPhone 3.1.2 on Baseband 05.11.07:

Fix 16xx and 21 Error during iPhone 3.1.2 Restore in iTunes

• Update your iTunes to latest version.
• Try again..
• Also try killing iTunes process in Task manager and iPod services after the error occurs. Reopen iTunes and try again..
• Try changing the USB port the or on another system.

iPhone 3G, 2G and iPod Touch, iPod Touch 2G users can use iREB to get rid of this error:

1. Download iREB
2. Start iTunes and put your phone into DFU mode:

3. Now close iTunes and Start iREB on your PC/Mac.
4. Run the iREB. Select your device and wait for a few seconds till you get white or a red screen on your iPhone.
5. Open iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore”  button in the iTunes. Select a custom .ipsw file and restore it. Your 16xx errors are gone.
