Rumors of fingerprint sensor in upcoming iPhone 5S has been around for quite some time now. If this new rumor is to be believed, the sensor will come as a part of home button, which will reportedly be touch sensitive and covered with sapphire crystal.

The iPhone’s Home button, which is prone to failure after long periods of use, will no longer be the same in upcoming iPhone 5S, reports Taiwanese publication TechNews Tuesday (via Cult of Mac). The report claims that Apple has opted to use sapphire crystal for the Home button on the iPhone 5S.

Apple is expected to do away with the traditional physical home button, which has long been one of the most unreliable components on iOS devices. It’s thought that using sapphire crystal, which has a hardness second only to diamond, will prevent the button from getting scratched and ruining the fingerprint sensor.

They insist Apple will employ a capacitive touch home button for the first time with the iPhone 5S, eliminating one of the most unreliable components in an iOS device.

If the rumor turns out to be true, it won’t be the first time the company is using sapphire in its products. In iPhone 5, Apple is already using sapphire crystal to protect rear camera lens from scratches.

It’s evident from the company’s $356 million purchase of AuthenTec that it is an area of Apple’s deep interest. Analysts think that finger print sensor is one the killer features of iPhone 5S. PayPal also expects Apple to kill passwords with more reliable and stronger fingerprint based authentication.

This new rumor is inline with earlier “fingerprint chip in iPhone 5S” related rumors.

iOS 7 which is being developed and redesigned under Jony Ive is rumored to bring flattened user interface. Keeping this in mind, a digital agency named Simply Zesty has created an iOS 7 user-interface concept that shows Jony Ive-ified, flattened UI.

Simply Zesty’s Art Director, Philip Joyce, has come up with a way to present what he thinks the iOS 7 should be like. And he has done it brilliantly. The video of this iOS 7 UI concept focuses on a clean UI and Lock screen widgets, a cleaner Notification Center with animated widgets, Windows Phone like stock apps such as Calendar, Music, Siri and Camera. The animations and overall fluidity of the iOS 7 concept are truly fun to look at.

http://www.youtube.com/embed/ESivYZXYqYE?feature=oembed

With WWDC day draws near, iOS 7 concepts have started making rounds. But the real iOS developers preview will be handed over to developers at WWDC, which is being held at Moscone West in San Francisco from Monday, June 10 until Friday, June 14.

iOS 7 is speculated to bring all new, flat interface, a new internet based service, possibly related to music streaming, and “killer app.”.

Many of the tech blogs have started seeing a spike in web traffic from the devices running the unreleased iOS 7 firmware, hinting at an increased internal rollout/testing.

Onswipe, a mobile site conversion firm, has noticed that iOS 7 traffic spikes across a bunch of web sites that incorporate its solutions over the past week or so. According to TechCrunch:

Over the past week, Onswipe found a significant bump in the number of visits from iOS 7 iPhones and iPads, specifically located in both Cupertino and San Francisco. SF had the most iOS 7 visits, with 18.75 percent, and Cupertino accounted for 17.9 percent of the total. May 2 saw the highest iOS 7 traffic to date, representing 23 percent, or nearly a quarter, of all unique iOS visitors to Onswipe-enabled sites. Most were visiting from iPhones (75 percent), but iPads also represented a full quarter of visits.

MacRumors, TNW and Macstories have seen a similar spike in traffic:

Apple will be giving a detailed preview of iOS 7 during WWDC on June 10th. Usually a developers preview of the latest iOS for registered developers is also made available, allowing them to ready their apps to take advantage of new features and improvements in the latest iOS version.

iOS 7 is speculated to bring all new, flat interface, a new internet based service, possibly related to music streaming, and “killer app.”.

Sharp, one of Apple’s display suppliers, is reportedly set to begin mass production of the LCD panels for the next generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5S in June at its Kameyama Plant No. 1 in Japan, according to a report from Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun via AppleInsider.

Sharp will supposedly be using its Kameyama Plant No. 1 to churn out LCDs bound for the so-called “iPhone 5S,” Apple’s much-rumored next-generation handset expected to see release in the third quarter, reports Japan’s Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun (via Kodawarisan). The Kameyama facility has seen poor utilization rates as Sharp’s LCD business waned in 2012, with the plant’s use dropping to some 40 percent of its 600-million unit per month maximum capacity.

The report also notes that Apple’s other display suppliers: Japan Display and LG Display have already started mass production of LCD panels for iPhone 5S.

There were speculations of Summer launch of iPhone 5S, which now seems highly unlikely because Apple is going to expected unveil iOS 7 at WWDC with a public release in September/October and the next iPhone will be released with iOS 7 installed.

During last month’s earning call, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook hinted “amazing new hardware, software and services later this fall”, strongly indicating September/October release for iPhone 5S.

The next generation iPhone is rumored to come with improved hardware such as faster processor, better camera, fingerprint sensor and NFC chip. Exterior, however, will most probably remain unchanged.

NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim claims that iPad mini 2, the 2nd generation iPad mini could go into mass production by next month. The display market researcher tell CNET today they think those Retina panels for the iPad mini 2 could go into mass-production as early as June or July this year.

CNET reports:

“We should see the start of mass production of the panels in June or July,” said Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch.

LG Display will be one of the major manufacturers of the display, he said, adding that Samsung is not a supplier for the Mini.

“Samsung is currently not in the iPad Mini and they won’t be in the next generation. LGD is becoming a much bigger supplier than before,” he said.

As far as the display resolution is concerned, introducing a new resolution for the Retina iPad mini would fragment the the platform. So, the next iPad mini will most probably come in a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, same as the iPad 3 and iPad 4. By not fragmenting the platform, Apple will make developers’ life a lot easier, as all currently available iOS apps and games will run just fine on the iPad mini 2 with 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution.

There’s no mention of any form factor change in retina iPad mini. However, accommodating Retina Display and a larger battery to power it, without increasing the iPad mini 2 thickness and weight, will surely be a challenge.

Samsung has aired a new Samsung Galaxy S4 commercial, and without surprise, the ad pokes fun at Apple iPhone. The commercial portrays the six years old smartphone as an outdated device even by your parents’ standard
This new Ad by Samsung focuses on some of the core new functions of Galaxy S4 that iPhone 5 lacks such as air gestures/air view that allows you to answer calls or preview a text message without even touching your device, S Beam for sharing photos between devices wirelessly by bumping the devices, and camera features. which are not available on iPhone 5.

To make iPhone look uncool, iPhone 5 has once again been shown being used by oldsters who tries to attempt to replicate Galaxy features on their iPhone to no avail. Checkout this Samsung Galaxy S4 graduation pool party:

Apple has released iOS 6.1.4, a new version of iOS this morning. iOS 6.1.4 is released for iPhone 5 only which brings no new feature other than an updated audio profile. The update has a build number 10B350.

iOS 6.1.4 for iPhone 5 is available as an over-the-air update, weighing at just 11.5 MB or you can download the full sized IPSW firmware file from the direct download link below. Like always, jailbreakers should stay away from iOS 6.1.4 IPSW, as it will not work with evasi0n.

Apparently, iOS 6.1.4 is available for iPhone 5 only. For such minor changes, we don’t see any reason why one would want to install it.

Before this, Apple had pushed iOS 6.1.3 fixing the Evasi0n jailbreak and lock screen vulnerability. Presumably, this is the last update until we see all new iOS 7 at WWDC 2013. Apple is all set to unveil iOS 7 at WWDC 2013 which is speculated to bring more customization features and design changes.

It looks like iPhone fans may not have to wait until Fall to get their hands on the new iPhone 5S. Nowhereelse.fr, a french blog, has published a purported leaked document from Japanese wireless carrier KDDI showing that pre-orders for the next iPhone dubbed as iPhone 5S will begin on June 20th and the phone will hit shelves sometime in July.

From AppleInsider:

Written and starred in red is information for the iPhone 5S “new product,” which is scheduled for a pre-sale announcement date of June 20 with sales starting in July. Below the release dates is a notation for major feature changes from the iPhone 5, which in this case says the supposed 5S will carry a fingerprint reader, 13-megapixel camera and iOS 7.

The areas highlighted in green offer information regarding au’s current monthly plans for the iPhone 5, including LTE flat rate plans and family calling subscription options, as well as a cash back bundle offer for users of the telecom’s “hikari” home internet service.

May be the carrier is trying to be inline with the upcoming WWDC 2013 on June 10th. WWDC has now become an iOS and OS X event and Apple is expected to unveil iOS 7 this year during the event. According to earlier rumors, Apple is facing issues in implementing new fingerprint sensor technology in the iPhone 5S, which could result in its release getting pushed back to September.

Facebook 6.0 for iOS brought major update to iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch featuring iconic Chat Heads, and Stickers from Facebook Home for Android. However, due to iOS restrictions, Facebook could not implement the chat heads feature system-wide on iPhone, which means Chat heads are locked down to being in-app only. But thanks to Jailbreak community that there’s a way to enable Facebook chat heads features system-wide in iOS.
A jailbreak tweak dubbed Message Box was in works that could bring chat heads system-wide to the iPhone. Adam Bell, the developer of Message Box, has just released Message Box into Cydia, available under BigBoss repo. Once installed, Message Box Cydia tweak will make Chat heads visible anywhere in iOS.

Set your Facebook Chat Heads free!

The Facebook app has Chat Heads locked down to being in-app only, this’ll help fix that! Take them out of the Facebook app and do whatever you’d like!

How to install Message Box

Install the Facebook iOS app on your iPhone.
*Note* It’s much easier if you have the Facebook Messenger app either logged-out, or uninstalled. That way you won’t get confused with the push notifications.

Now open Cydia on your jailbroken iPhone and search for “Message Box” and install it.

Tap the Restart SpringBoard button. Voila!

You can configure options under Settings app. A manual chat refresh timer is configurable in settings, though keep in mind a shorter delay will decrease battery life.

Now to system-wide Chat heads in action, simply launch the Facebook app, initiate chat with any of your Facebook contact (which should open a Chat head), and quit the Facebook app. The chat heads should still be accessible from your home screen. To remove a Chat head, simply drag it down to the bottom of the screen.

Don’t forget to share your thoughts on system-wide Chat heads and also checkout our list of Best Cydia Apps list.

WWDC 2013 will take place at Moscone West in San Francisco from Monday, June 10 through Friday, June 14th. Tickets for the conference will be on sale tomorrow (April 25) at 10 AM Pacific Time.

WWDC typically includes previews of new versions of iOS and OS X and sessions for iOS and OS X developers to work on their code and new projects alongside Apple engineers. Despite being a very popular event that sells out in hours, the conference still takes place at Moscone West.

We look forward to gathering at WWDC 2013 with the incredible community of iOS and OS X developers,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Our developers have had the most prolific and profitable year ever, and we’re excited to show them the latest advances in software technologies and developer tools to help them create innovative new apps. We can’t wait to get new versions of iOS and OS X into their hands at WWDC.

WWDC 2013 activities include:

More than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers on a wide range of topics for developing, deploying and integrating the latest iOS and OS X technologies;

more than 1,000 Apple engineers supporting over 100 hands-on labs and events to provide developers with code-level assistance, insight into optimal development techniques and guidance on how they can make the most of iOS and OS X technologies in their apps;

the latest innovations, features and capabilities of iOS and OS X, and how to enhance an app’s functionality, performance, quality and design;

the opportunity to connect with thousands of fellow iOS and OS X developers from around the world—last year more than 60 countries were represented;

engaging and inspirational lunchtime sessions with leading minds and influencers from the worlds of technology, science and entertainment; and

Apple Design Awards which recognize iPhone®, iPad® and Mac apps that demonstrate technical excellence, innovation and outstanding design.

Tickets for the conference will go on sale tomorrow for $1599, April 25th at 10 AM Pacific / 1PM. Tickets are limited to one ticket per person or five tickets per organization. Last year, WWDC 2012 was sold out in less than 2 hours! With the expected unvieling of an overhauled iOS 7, this year’s demand could be even greater.

Earlier this month, WSJ reported that Apple plans to begin producing the next iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5S, this quarter. The report indicated a possible Summer launch for iPhone 5S. WSJ now claims that Foxconn, Apple’s primary manufacturing partner in China, is going to inscrease its staff in order to ramp up production for Apple’s iPhone 5S.

Accroding to WSJ, Foxconn is adding around 10,000 new assembly line workers a week to its iPhone production facility, with unnamed executives at the company confirming that the company is preparing for the next iPhone launch.

The Taiwanese company said Monday it has added about 10,000 assembly-line workers a week in Zhengzhou, its major production facility for iPhones, since the last week of March.

A Foxconn spokesman declined to elaborate regarding production plans, only saying that the company will continue to expand its workforce in Zhengzhou to meet seasonal demand from clients. But Foxconn executives familiar with the situation said the company has stepped up hiring in Zhengzhou because it is preparing for production of the next iPhone.

“We have been very busy recently as we will start mass-producing the new iPhone soon,” said a Zhengzhou-based Foxconn executive who has direct knowledge of production plans.

iPhone 5S is widely speculated to come in same design as that of iPhone 5, but with faster processor, improved camera, NFC and fingerprint scanner. However, Apple is reportedly facing technical challenges for fingerprint sensor and finding it difficult to find the right color coating to prevent interference with the sensor.

GSMArena has posted a bunch of leaked photos of alleged iPhone 5S prototype, sources from a tipster. The alleged iPhone 5S prototype reveals a radical redesign, curved edge-to-edge display and absence of iconic home button.

We strongly urge you to take these photos with piches of salt because this kind of design is is not typical of Apple. The device pictured may well just be photoshopped or even digitally rendered altogether.

The display of the alleged iPhone 5S prototype is sloped towards edges, which conincides with a patent application from the Cupertino company that was approved last week. Below you can see the sketch from the Apple patent application.

It’s worth mentioning here that Apple tends to make more squarish designs for its smartphones, which allow more room in the chassis of the phone and a more compact device.

Not only the photos quality makes it suspicious, the illustrated design suggests a radical design change in the currect iPhone form factor, which is unlike of Apple. Because all the iPhone “S” upgrades (iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S) have remained almost identical to their respective predecessors.

There’s one scenario that might make sense here – what you are seeing could be a prototype on which Apple is working. All major manufacturers consider and test a number of different designs before settling on the final version. It might also be a case specially designed to conceal the look of the Apple iPhone 5S, but that seems too much effort – these dev units are usually simple plastic rectangles.

This so called iPhone 5S prototype may reflect a future iPhone, but it’s unlikely the iPhone 5S, unless Apple is planning a break its tradition.
