The good news is that the iOS 5.1.x untethered jailbreak will be out in a couple of weeks and Pod2G won’t hold it off for iOS 6.

He writes on his blog answering following questions:

The poll about releasing now or waiting for 6.0 ended with a 64% / 33% to release ASAP. Where is the link ? ETA ? How much % done ? etc.
As I said earlier in twitter, there’s still a lot to do to have a user friendly and well tested tool to install the jailbreak on end users devices. Expect a release in a couple of weeks.

Will it be compatible with my ?
It will be compatible with any device running iOS 5.1.1 except iPod 3G, iPhone 3Gs and ATV3 (right now, may change in a near future, nobody knows).

Why is it so slow to release now that the iPad 3,1 has been demoed ?
There are 16 different devices out there to work on and to test. It takes time.

May I be a beta tester?
No, sorry. Only really trusted people (that can be counted on one hand) could have access to the jailbreak. I don’t want any leak to happen.

What if I offer you 1,000,000$ ?
That doesn’t change a thing.

This untethered 5.1.1 jailbreak will be compatible with all iOS 5.1.1 devices such as iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad 1, iPod touch 4G, iPod touch 3G and Apple TV 2. Apple TV 3 is not yet supported by this jailbreak.

Update#1:

As I already said on twitter, iPod 3G and iPhone 3GS won’t be compatible with the upcoming jailbreak.

Starting with redsn0w version 0.9.11b1, those with newer devices (iPad2, iPad3, and iPhone4S) can join the downgrade fun too!  In a radical departure from previous versions of redsn0w, it now directly supports restoring IPSWs to your device.  The first use of this new feature implements a hack that allows A5 downgrades without a bootrom-level exploit.

Some important points:

• The new feature is at Extras->Even More->Restore
• You cannot downgrade without the personalized SHSH blobs for your device at that lower firmware. You need to have fetched those blobs while the signing window was open, using either Cydia’s built-in TSS@Home feature, or with TinyUmbrella. The new Restore screen of redsn0w lets you choose either the remote blobs or local ones (for the earlier firmware). If you don’t know where TinyUmbrella put your blobs, TinyUmbrella has a button that will show you (copy them out of that folder and feed them to redsn0w).
• The A5 downgrade method actually updates to the latest firmware before downgrading to the earlier one. This process updates your baseband to whatever is newest. DO NOT USE THIS METHOD IF YOU RELY ON UNOFFICIAL UNLOCKS of your iPhone4S. Those who used the temporary SAM technique to unlock their iPhones to specific SIMs shouldn’t be affected by this baseband update.
• This method can be fixed by Apple with a firmware update. It’s a (pleasant) mystery why they haven’t fixed it yet, because reverse-engineering of the restore ramdisk indicates they do know about it. It’s possibly too niche to bother to fix right now.
• The least-tested devices with this method are the iPad2,3 and iPad3,2 (because we don’t have those models). If you do and you feel like experimenting, please let us know how it turns out in the comment section below!
• This update involves a bunch of new redsn0w code. We recommend sticking to the previous version 0.9.10b8b unless you’re specifically using this new feature, until all the bugs are worked out! (Note: If redsn0w gets stuck at the “Waiting for device” stage for more than 30 seconds, you’ve hit a pesky GUI bug…that will be fixed in an upcoming version!)

We’ll be posting step by step instruction to downgrade your iPhone 4S, iPad 3 and iPad 2 using RedSn0w shortly.  You can download RedSn0w 0.9.11b2 from the links below…

Update #1: We accidentally left out one of the two flavors (“9A406”) of 5.0.1 for iPhone4S.  It’ll be in the next update, but in the meantime check if Cydia or TU saved your blobs for the other 5.0.1 for iPhone4S (“9A405”). Version 0.9.11b2 adds support for that second “9A406” flavor of 5.0.1 for the iPhone4S.

Update #2: Version 0.9.11b3 should fix the spurious “Restore failed” messages people were sometimes getting, and it behaves better with nearby devices that have wifi syncing enabled!

Update #3: Version 0.9.11b4 completes the tethered JB support for 5.1.1 on A4 devices and earlier, including proper “Stitching” and “Custom” creation of NO_BB IPSWs.

How to Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 with RedSn0w

1. Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b8b [Windows | Mac OS X]
2. Upgrade your device to iOS 5.1.1 either by over-the-air update (Settings > General > Software Update), or by connecting your iDevice to your computer, open iTunes and accepting and installing the update, or download iOS 5.1.1 and manually restore with iTunes.
   (Not recommended for UltraSn0w/Gevey SIM unlocker, please create a custom firmware with RedSn0w and continue)
3. Download iOS 5.1 for your device (yes iOS 5.1, NOT 5.1.1)
4. Now launch the Redsn0w and click on “Extras”, then “Select IPSW” and locate iOS 5.1 IPSW file that you just downloaded (iOS 5.1, NOT 5.1.1)
5. Once RedSn0w recognizes the 5.1 IPSW file, go back to the Main screen of RedSn0w and Click “Jailbreak” button
6. Follow the on-screen instruction to put your iPhone, ipad or iPod Touch into DFU Mode
7. As soon as your device enters DFU Mode, RedSn0w will  identify the build and load the jailbreak data
8. Select “Install Cydia” from the options and hit Next to begin the jailbreak process. Upon completion your device will reboot. Put your device back into DFU Mode
9. On RedSn0w, go back to the Main screen, hit “Extras” and then “Just Boot“
10. It should tether boot your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and you will have a working Cydia icon on your home screen.

Remember, this works on A4 or older devices only. iPhone 4S, iPad 3 and iPad 2 are not supported.

The loophole found by iH8Sn0w, in Apple’s apticket system will even work on A5X devices as soon as Apple pushes a new firmware update. This downgrade method will work on all A5 and A5X devices which includes iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new iPad 3.

This is a big news for the jailbreak community because at this time finding jailbreak exploits for every iOS update has become a difficult task and it is nearly impossible to downgrade iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3 because of the aptickets system Apple had introduced in iOS 5 or later firmwares.

Welcome to the ‘Save SHSH’ Family!

Connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to iTunes and backup your personal stuff

Run the Sn0wBreeze.exe. Hit Ok, Close Credits and then hit the next button.

Step 3

Hit the Browse button and select the iOS 5.1 IPSW file for your iDevice that you downloaded in Step 1. Sn0wBreeze will identify the IPSW firmware file. Then hit the Next button.

Step 4

Select the Expert Mode, hit Next;
Select General and hit Next;
Make your desired choices, then keep hitting Next until you’re back to the screen where you selected General.

Step 5

Select the Build IPSW option and hit next.
Sn0wBreeze 2.9.2 will start building custom iOS 5.1 firmware to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Sno0wbreeze offers you the choice to play PacMac during the IPSW building process or stick with the Spinner.
Once Done! Hit the OK button. (Custom firmware 5.1 can be found on desktop along with an iBooty folder)

Step 6

Now follow the on screen Sn0wBreeze instructions *important* to put your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into Pwned DFU state NOT the simple DFU mode.

• Hold Power + Home buttons for 10 seconds
• Now release the Power button but keep holding the Home button for 10-30 more seconds

Sn0wBreeze will prompt you once you’re into Pwned DFU state. Your device should now be in DFU mode.

Step 7

• Now open iTunes, Hold down the Shift/Option key and hit the Restore button.
• Browse and select the custom firmware that we just created, from the desktop.

iTunes will start restoring iOS 5.1 on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. Once done, your iPhone, ipad or iPod Touch will be running iOS 5.1 jailbroken tethered.

How to Tether Boot

• On your desktop, there’ll be a new folder named iBooty. Open the folder and run the iBooty.exe.
• Select your device from the drop down menu (bottom-right) and hit the start button.
• Follow the on screen instructions to put your iDevice into DFU mode.
  • Hold Power + Home buttons for 10 seconds.
  • Now release the Power button but keep holding the Home button for 10-30 more seconds
• Your device should now be in DFU mode
• Once you’re into DFU mode, iBooty will do the rest and your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will boot into jailbroken state!

IMPORTANT

• Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 jailbreak for iOS 5.1 supports iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G and iPad 1.
• No A5-devices support (iPhone 4S, iPad 2)

Why is there no A5 support? :~(
A low level (DFU/iBoot/LLB) exploit is required to start the restoration of custom IPSWs. The past two jailbreaks (JailbreakMe & absinthe) for the A5 worked within iOS itself. These exploits are not capable of bringing the iDevice into a state where it will accept custom IPSWs. Therefore, an A5 device cannot currently downgrade to an iOS revision that Apple is no longer signing (even with SHSH blobs) and it cannot preserve the baseband when updating to a newer iOS revision.

While the future may always seem to get more narrower… Keep your head high and continue to be open minded.

IMPORTANT

• It’s a tethered jailbreak which requires you to connect your iPad to your computer, every time you reboot it, and use “Just Boot” feature in RedSn0w to boot in into jailbreak mode. If you turn on the iPod Touch without using “Just Boot” feature, jailbreak apps won’t work (neither will Safari).

Step 1

Download iOS 5.1 for your iPad
Download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6
Download iTunes 10.6

First of all backup your iPad personal data via iTunes before restoring to iOS 5.1.

Step 2

Connect your iPad to your computer, open iTunes, hold down the Shift (Windows) or Alt/Option (Mac) key and hit the Restore button on iTunes and then browse and select the downloaded iOS 5.1 IPSW file.

Step 3

After restoring process has completed; Run RedSn0w; Click Jailbreak; Now make sure your iPod Touch is turned OFF and Plugged in to your computer. Hit Next.

Step 4

Now follow the on-screen instructions to enter your device in DFU mode.

1. Hold Down The Power (Corner) button for 3 Seconds
2. Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home (Bottom Center) button for 10 seconds
3. Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button BUT KEEP holding the Home button for 15 seconds

Step 5

Once your iPad is in DFU Mode, check “Install Cydia” and hit the next button. RedSn0w will start jailbreaking it, which should be completed within few minutes. That’s it!

Once done, your iPad will be tethered jailbroken on iOS 5.1 firmware. Now let’s talk hot to tether boot it, because without tether boot, you won’t be able to use the jailbreak features, even Safari browser.

How to Tether Boot

1. Run the Redsn0w
2. Hit Extras, then Just Boot.
3. Hit next, follow the on-screen instructions to enter iPad into DFU mode.

This should boot your iPad into tethered jailbreak mode. Don’t forget to repeat the tether boot process every time you reboot your device.

Once your iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G is in DFU Mode, check “Install Cydia” and hit the next button.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 4, 3GS iOS 5.1 with RedSn0w

Step 1

Download iOS 5.1
Download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6
Download iTunes 10.6

First of all backup your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS personal data via iTunes before restoring to iOS 5.1.

Attention iPhone Unlockers

UltraSn0w or Gevey SIM dependent iPhone users MUST preserve their baseband before restoring iOS 5.0.1. You can do that by creating a custom firmware with RedSn0w. Step 2

Connect your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS to your computer, open iTunes, hold down the Shift (Windows) or Alt/Option (Mac) key and hit the Restore button on iTunes and then browse and select the downloaded iOS 5.1 IPSW file (Unlockers MUST use Custom Firmware).

Step 3

After restoring process has completed; Run RedSn0w; Click Jailbreak; Now make sure your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is turned OFF and Plugged in to your computer. Hit Next.

Now follow the on-screen instructions to enter your device in DFU mode.
