If you don’t know, Planetbeing and MuscleNerd have been working on iPhone 4 unlock for a few weeks now. They found an exploit to unlock iPhone 4 and then come up with 3 ways to take advantage of that loop hole to inject the baseband unlock. Planetbeing had already unlocked iPhone 4 using on of the 3 ways (Demoed here) and now MuscleNerd has implemented the unlock using the 2nd way. They’ll release the one which is more stable, fast and easy.

Planet being has shared screenshots of his unlocked iPhone 4 on Bell, Canada. He’ll be doing a video in a couple of hours. This is what he tweeted:

Planetbeing has been working on iPhone 4 Baseband day-and-night to find an exploit to develop an iPhone 4 unlock. Here’s what he had tweeted yesterday:

They have posted the baseband bootrom of the iPhone 4. Now they can compare the iPhone 4 Bootrom to earlier 3G/3GS bootroms to see if any bug-fixes pop out. This may lead to iPhone 3GS/3G bootrom exploit

Dev-Team has an exploit for months now and they have been waiting for a big release. Now that the time has come, the unlock that they have developed with that exploit is able to unlock baseband 05.12.01 of iPhone OS 3.1.3 and the baseband 05.13.xx that comes with iOS 4.0.

All the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users (possibly iPhone 4 too) will be able to unlock their iPhone running OS 3.1.3 baseband 05.12.01 and iOS 4.0 baseband 05.13.0x.

IMPORTANT

• This Guide is for iPhone 3GS running OS 3.1.2/3.1.3/4.0GM with OLD BOOTROM.
• Your iPhone 3GS iOS 4.0 MUST be jailbroken. (Jailbreak Guides are linked below.)
• Your iPhone Baseband MUST be at 05.11.07 (You can preserve baseband using PwnageTool)
• It is a little slower to boot because of the increased safety of the release. A 3GS boots to cell connection established in about 90 seconds in iOS 4 now (50% slower than 3.1.X).
• Blacksn0w RC2 is NOT an official unlock tool. The Official unlock tool is expected in a couple of weeks.

Assuming that you’ve jailbroken iPhone 3GS iOS 4.0 using the jailbreak guide linked at the bottom. Let’s unlock iPhone 3GS on iOS 4 with Baseband 05.11.07 using Blacksn0w RC2.

STEP 1

Run the Cydia and go to Manage Tab.

STEP 2

Tap the big Sources button and Add the following source to Cydia (Hit Edit button and then Add):

Once you have added the above mentioned source, go to Search tab and search for blacksn0w rc2 and install it.

This unlock iPhone OS 4.0 is demoed for iPhone 3GS running OS 4.0 beta 4 with Baseband 05.11.07. To unlock iPhone 3GS 4.0 with Blacksn0w, your 3GS 4.0 beta 4 must be jailbroken and baseband preserved at 05.11.07 with old iBoot (359.3).

The BlackSn0w unlock for iPhone 3GS OS 4.0 is kinda buggy ATM, you will have to reapply the patch files after each reboot. So, if you are not an experienced user, it’s highly recommended to stay away from this patch and wait for the dev-team to release unlock for baseband 05.12.01 which is expected as soon as the iPhone 4G along with iPhone firmware 4.0 comes out.

Why to hold off an unlock for baseband 05.12.01 OS 3.1.3, when the newer firmware will bring newer baseband?? Answer is, dev-team want to test the same exploit on iPhone 4G OS 4.0 and if it worked, it’ll the best thing ever happened in iPhone hacking world and if it doesn’t, we shall have PwnageTool to safely update to OS 4.0 while preserving baseband at 05.12.01.

Blacksn0w RC2 is based on original BlackSn0w and the fix recently released by MSFTGuy to unlock Baseband 05.11.07 on iPhone OS 3.1.3. BlackSn0w RC2 is not released by GeoHot. The guy behind Push fix 2.0 has repackaged it for you.

The Turkish Guy unlocked iPhone 3G 3.1.3 05.12.07 baseband by a hardware flash. He downgraded the baseband by flashing it back to 04.26.08.

Don’t get your hopes high, it’s a hardware level unlock that can’t be done by everyone. Wait for the Dev Team or GeoHot to come up with an unlock for baseband 05.12.01. BlackSn0w is unable to unlock baseband 05.11.07 on firmware 3.1.3 because it locates a function to patch by searching the binary for reference to string “SIM is not supported” but in iPhone OS 3.1.3, the same function now uses the string “Verified”. Since the location to patch is determined by instruction search&replace, the patch itself still works in 3.1.3 after changing the string and its length in Blacksn0w binary.

Unlock iPhone 3.1.3 Baseband 05.11.07 with BlackSn0w

STEP 1

Download BlackSn0w.deb: blacksn0w.deb
extract it using 7-zip (Download 7-zip).

STEP 2

Install OpenSSH on your iPhone from Cydia. Then reboot your iPhone.

STEP 3

Connect your iPhone to your computer and close the iTunes.

STEP 4

Windows Users:

Download WinSCP and install it. Run the WinSCP and provide the following details:

• Hostname: IP address of your iPhone. (Settings >> WiFi >> Tap the Arrow next to selected Network)
• User name: root
• Password: input your SSH password here. Default password is alpine
• Protocol: SCP

Mac Users:

Download Cyberduck for Mac and install. Run the Cyberduck and provide the following details:

Server: IP address of your iPhone. (Settings >> WiFi >> Tap the Arrow next to selected Network)
Username: root
Password: input your SSH password here. Default password is alpine
Protocol: SFTP

STEP 5

Copy the System\Library\LaunchDaemons\com.apple.CommCenter.plist from blacksn0w.deb to /tmp/ directory on the phone, you’ve SSH’d into.

STEP 6

Download the patched blacksn0w.dylib (Download Link 1 | Link 2)

Copy it to /usr/lib/ directory on the phone.

STEP 7

Install the MobileTerminal from Cydia. Open the Terminal app and  run the following commands to login as root.

• su root
• alpine

Once you have logged in, enter the following command (yes it’s a single lengthy command)

launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist ; launchctl load /tmp/com.apple.CommCenter.plist ; launchctl start com.apple.CommCenter

Check if you get the Signals with unofficial Carrier SIM.

In case the test load fails, your iPhone will freeze. Wait 20 seconds and reboot it using (Power+Home) buttons combination.

STEP 8

if test load is successful, copy the com.apple.CommCenter.plist file from /tmp/ directory on the iPhone to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/.

Reboot your iPhone. That’s it.
