In this guide you’ll learn how to jailbreak iPhone 3GS iOS 4.0.1 firmware with PwnageTool (Unofficial). Using this guide you can jailbreak iPhone 3GS (old bootRom) and must already be jailbroken. Read the IMPORTANT part below and continue jailbreaking iPhone 3GS 4.0.1.

The steps mentioned below are NOT recommended for newbies. If you’re not confident then better wait for the Comex’s Spirit jailbreak which is expected in a few days.

IMPORTANT

PwnageTool bundles used in this guide are unofficial (NOT from iPhone Dev-Team)
iPhone 3GS OLD Bootrom only.
iPhone 3GS MUST already be jailbroken.
This also hacktivated iPhone 3GS
Your baseband will be preserved!
After jailbreak, you can unlock iPhone 3GS with UltraSn0w 0.93.
Mac OS X only.

If you fulfill the above requirements then you can follow the step-by-step instructions below to create custom firmware 4.0.1 and then jailbreak iPhone 3GS iOS 4.

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.0.1 (OLD BOOTROM)

Required Stuff

Download all the stuff linked above, create a folder “JB” on your desktop and put all the files into JB folder after extracting. Folder should look like this:

STEP 1

Open the Terminal.app in your Mac and execute the following commands:

cd /Users/USERNAME/Desktop/JB
ls -al
mv iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306.bundle PwnageTool.app/Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/
exit

See the screenshot below:

You’ve added the custom bundle to PwnageTool.app

STEP 2

Now create a custom firmware 4.0.1 using the PwnageTool.app in the JB folder. Follow the step by step instruction in the guide linked below to create custom iOS 4.0.1 firmware. Make sure you select iOS 4.0.1 when PwnageTool asks for it. Then restore via iTunes.

Jailbreak iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS (Jailbroken with Spirit) Using Spirit2Pwn

iPhone 3Gs users with old bootrom can jailbreak iOS 4 firmware using Sn0wBreeze 1.6.2 and PwnageTool 4. But both tools also required you iPhone 3GS to be already jailbroken but not with Spirit jailbreak in order to successfully restore custom firmware on iPhone 3GS (old bootrom).

But now Spirit jailbroken users can also restore custom firmware iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) using Spirit2Pwn patch from Cydia.

Spirit2Pwn adds support for iOS 4 custom firmware restore to the iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) that is already jailbroken with Spirit jailbreak. This Spirit2Pwn patch is for iPhone 3GS users jailbroken using Spirit on OS 3.1.3/3.1.2 with Old BootRom only.

WARNING: Please Note that it’s an unofficial release and Don’t Try This On New BootRom.

Jailbreak iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS (Jailbroken with Spirit) Using Spirit2Pwn

Assuming that you’ve already jailbroken 3GS on 3.1.3/3.1.2 with Spirit. Simply go to Cydia.
Add the following source: http://repo.woowiz.net
Now search for Spirit2Pwn in Cydia.
Install Spirit2Pwn

After installing Spirit2Pwn, you can jailbreak iOS 4 firmware using Sn0wBreeze 1.6, PwnageTool 4 or can also use ready made custom iOS 4 and then unlock iOS 4 on baseband 05.12.01, Baseband 05.13.04 and 05.11.07 using UltraSn0w 0.93.

PwnageTool 4.01: Fixes iBooks Issue

Dev-Team has updated PwnageTool to version 4.01 to jailbreak iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS (OLD BootROM), 3G and iPod Touch 2G (Non-MC). PwnageTool 4.01 fixes the iBooks issue in jailbroken iDevices that came with PwnageTool 4.0.

Dev-team has released PwnageTool 4.0, the jailbreak tool for iPhone 3G iOS 4 firmware. Using PwnageTool 4.0, you can jailbreak iPhone 3GS (Old BootRom), iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (Non-MC) running iOS 4 and it preserves the baseband so you can unlock iPhone 3G, 3GS with UltraSn0w 0.93.

NOTE: iPhone 3G users can also jailbreak iOS 4.0 using RedSn0w 0.9.5 b5-3 but it also updates baseband to 05.13.04. Don’t worry, UltraSn0w can unlock all basebands including 05.13.04, 05.12.01, 05.11.07, and 04.26.08. However PwnageTool jailbreak is the recommended way to update firmware.

You can jailbreak iPhone 3GS (Old BootRom), iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (Non-MC) running iOS 4 with PwnageTool while preserving the baseband so you can unlock with UltraSn0w 0.93. In this guide you’ll learn how to jailbreak iOS 4 with PwnageTool 4.0.

iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (non-MC) users can also user RedSn0w 0.9.5 b5-3 to jailbreak iOS 4.

How to Jailbreak iOS 4.0 with PwnageTool 4.0

All the required stuff is linked at the bottom. Download and put everything in a folder named Pwnage on your desktop for quick access.

Step 1

Download and install iTunes 9.2. (Download Link below) Connect your iPhone, iPod Touch to iTunes and backup your stuff.

Step 2

Double click on PwnageTool 4.0.dmg to mount it. (Download link below)

Click and drag the PwnageTool icon to Pwnage Folder you created and then open it from there.

Warning Box will Popup. Just hit the OK button.

Make sure you select Expert Mode from Top menu

Step 3

Select your device (iPhone or iPod Touch). A big Green check mark will appear on the selected device.
Now hit the big Blue Arrow button at bottom right to proceed.

On the next page, PwnageTool will automatically find the IPSW file. If not found then click “Browse for IPSW” button and select the downloaded IPSW iOS 4 file from the Pwnage folder. A check mark will appear next to it.

Step 4

Then hit Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Steps 5

Then Select General and Hit next again.

This is the most important step. Please read carefully about selecting activate the phone option.

Activate the iPhone: Click activate the phone (only if you’re on unofficial carrier). Deselect Activate the phone option if you are on official carrier.
Re0enable functionality: (for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G users only) Check mark this option if you want to enable multitasking, wallpaper and battery percentage on iOS 4.0. These options are disabled in stock firmware.
Root Partition Size: You can decide your Root Partition Size where OS resides. For the iOS 4 firmware you may have to increase the size of your root partition slightly for the IPSW build to be successful. I like 1GB.

The next screen will show the Cydia settings menu. It allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install them later.

Go to Download packages tab and hit the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double click your desired package, it will be downloaded and will be available under the Select Packages tab.

***Please make sure that your desired package is compatible with iOS 4.0***

When you have downloaded your desired packages, go back to Select Packages tab and check mark the ones you want.

then hit the Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Custom Packages Settings. Leave these settings as is for now. Just click the Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

On the next Custom Logos Settings menu, you’ll be able to add your own images as boot logos. Click the Browse button to select your Boot logo and Recovery logo. I just use defaults so deselected all options.

Step 6

Now you are ready to build your custom firmware. Click the build button to select it, then click the blue arrow button to proceed.

You will be asked to Save your custom .ipsw file. Save it into the same Pwnage folder.

PwnageTool will start building your custom firmware. Wait until it’s done.

If prompted enter your Administrator password and click the OK button.

When prompted if your iPhone has been Pwned before, Click No. It allows for a more thorough restore.

Step 7

NOTE: If you’re already jailbroken (Other than Spirit) simply put your iPhone into recovery mode. (How to: put iPhone into recovery mode)

Please make sure you are restoring to the custom IPSW, not the stock one from Apple!

If it’s the first time you’re jailbreaking your iPhone, Be ready to follow directions to get into DFU Mode. (Click the DFU button in PwnageTool)

You will be asked to Turn your device OFF.
Hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds.
Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10-30 seconds to enter DFU.

If you failed to follow the instruction, it will show you a message asking if you want to retry?. Click Yes.

Unplug the iPhone from the USB. Turn it OFF, then turn it back ON. Reconnect it to USB and turn OFF the iPhone when prompted.

When followed correctly, PwnageTool will display a message telling you that it has successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will also pop-up.

Step 8

In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and hit Restore. From the popup window, browse to the Pwnage Folder and select you custom .ipsw file that you just created and click Open Button.

iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPhone. This can take up to 10 minutes.

When done, you have successfully Jailbreak iOS 4.0 firmware with PwnageTool 4.0.

Dev-Team has released the PwnageTool 4.0 to jailbreak iOS 4.0 on iPhone 3GS, 3G, and iPod Touch 2G. PwnageTool 4.0 jailbreak iOS 4.0 while preserving your baseband so that you can unlock it with UltraSn0w. Download PwnageTool 4.0 jailbreak links are posted below.

ATTENTION: Each device has known upgrade traps and different upgrade scenarios that need to be fully understood and considered before using PwnageTool 4.0. Please read the complete post below and perform the upgrade in the particular way that matches your current device state. As advised, you shouldn’t have upgraded your devices if you have previously relied on our tools for hacktivation and/or a carrier unlock.

iPhone 3GS

Summary: PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.

If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with recovery mode.
If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.0

iPhone 3G

If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.0 ipsw using DFU mode.
If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
Can also use RedSn0w to jailbreak. (Guide linked below)

IMPORTANT! Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.

iPod touch 2G

If you have an iPod touch 2G that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode.
Can also use RedSn0w to jailbreak. (Guide linked below)

Baseband Unlock

iPhone 3G and 3GS baseband unlockers (those who rely on ultrasn0w to make phone calls) should always be very wary to update their firmware, however our Ultrasn0w application will unlock all recent (including the current) 3GS and 3G baseband firmware versions, once you are jailbroken using PwnageTool 4.0, install ultrasn0w from Cydia and you’ll be unlocked.
Remember! This baseband unlock situation is rare, should you upgrade your iPhone blindly at the next iOS release please don’t expect an unlock – but for now you are OK (whatever state your baseband is in).

msft.guy has release PwnageTool bundle for iPhone 3GS on iOS 4. Using these PwnageTool bundles with existing official PwnageTool 3.1.5 will let you create iOS 4 GM custom firmware for iPhone 3GS. So, you can jailbreak iPhone 3GS iOS 4 GM while preserving the baseband so that you may unlock iPhone 3GS with BlackSn0w or UltraSn0w.

msft.guy is the same guy who modified BlackSn0w unlock to enable support for iPhone 3.1.3 05.11.07. It’s very easy to jailbreak iPhone 3GS iOS 4 with PwnageTool using modified bundle. You only have to add msft.guy’s PwnageTool bundles to the official PwnageTool and then you’ll be able to create iOS 4 GM custom firmware.

***This guide is for Already jailbroken iPhone 3GS users only (Jailbroken with redsn0w, PwnageTool, Blackra1n or Sn0wbreeze NOT Spirit). and works on Mac OS only. This works for older BootRom 3Gs only [How to: check iPhone 3GS BootRom] else you’ll end up with 16xx error.

STEP 1 – Required Stuff

Download PwnageTool 3.1.5
Download PwnageTool Bundle for iPhone 3Gs iOS 4 GM [Mirror 1]
Download RedSn0w 0.9.5b4
Download iOS 4 GM

STEP 2 – Add Custom Bundles to PwnageTool

Extract the downloaded iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_bundle.zip.
Right Click on the PwnageTool.app and click on Show Package Contents.
Then navigate to the following directory: Contents>Resources>FirmwareBundles and copy the extracted iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_bundle.bundle into FirmwareBundles directory.

STEP 3 – Add New Cydia to PwnageTool

Right click on the downloaded RedSn0w jailbreak and go to Show Package Contents.
Go to: Contents>MacOS and copy the Cydia.tar.gz from that folder to your desktop and Extract it.

Now copy the extracted Cydia folder to PwnageTool.app. To do that:

Right click on Pwnagetool.app and ‘Show Package Contents’.
Go to : Contents > Resources > CustomPackages and then Right click on ‘CydiaInstaller.bundle’ and ‘Show Package Contents’
Go to: Files folder and overwrite all the files with the ones you just extracted from redsn0w. That’s it.

STEP 4 – Create Custom iOS 4 Firmware

Now that you have modified the PwnageTool.app, it’s time to create custom iOS 4 firmware with pwnageTool for iPhone 3GS using downloaded iOS 4 GM. If you don’t know how to, follow the guide linked below to create Custom firmware with pwnageTool,

STEP 5. Restore Custom Firmware

Once you’ve created the custom firmware (CFW), Put your iPhone 3Gs into Recovery/Restore Mode and restore your device via iTunes with CFW. That’s it.

This guide is for Mac users only because PwnageTool is available for Mac only. Windows users can either use RedSn0w or Sn0wbreeze or wait for the upcoming ready made custom firmwares only at iPhoneheat.com.

PwnageTool can jailbreak:

iPhone 3GS (with early bootrom)
iPhone 3G
iPhone 2G
iPod touch 1G
iPod touch 2G (with early bootrom + pre-jailbroken)

IMPORTANT

if you have an ipt1g, iphone2g, or iphone3g(and don’t need an unlock), we strongly recommend you to use redsn0w
Do not upgrade to 3.1.3 if you need the unlock for 05.11.07 baseband, blacksn0w does NOT WORK!

ok… Let’s start jailbreaking iPhone 3.1.3 using PwnageTool.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 Firmware

Update your iTunes to latest version and Backup your iPhone.

Create a folder on your desktop and name it: Pwnage. Then download the files linked at the bottom and put into Pwnage folder.

(Download through Firefox because Safari often auto extracts ipsw file)

Step 1
Double click PwnageTool_3.1.5 dmg file to mount it.

Click and drag the PwnageTool icon to Pwnage Folder you created and then open it from there.

Warning Box will Popup. Just hit the OK button.

Step 2
Make sure you select Expert Mode from Top menu

Step 3
Select your device. A big Green check mark will appear on the selected device.
Now hit the big Blue Arrow button at bottom right to proceed.

Step 4
On the next page, PwnageTool will automatically find the IPSW file. If not found then click “Browse for IPSW” button and select the downloaded IPSW OS 3.1.3 file from the Pwnage folder. A check mark will appear next to it.

Then hit Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Step 5
On the next page you will have 6 choices. Select the General and hit Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Step 6
This is the most important step. Please read carefully about selecting activate the phone option. You will know you didn’t choose the right option if you don’t have signal after jailbreaking.

On the next Page you can decide your Root Partition Size where OS resides. Click activate the phone (only if you’re on unofficial carrier).

***Deselect Activate the phone option if you are on official carrier. For the 3.1.3 firmware you may have to increase the size of your root partition slightly for the IPSW build to be successful. I like 1GB.***

The Bootneuter settings are greyed out for the iPhone 3GS and 3G and iPod Touches. Click the blue arrow button.

The next screen will show the Cydia settings menu. It allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install them later.

Go to Download packages tab.and hit the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double click your desired package, it will be downloaded and will be available under the Select Packages tab.

When you have downloaded your desired packages, go back to Select Packages tab and check mark the ones you want.

then hit the Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Custom Packages Settings will displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. Leave these settings as is for now. Just click the Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step 7
Now you are ready to build your custom firmware. Click the build button to select it, then click the blue arrow button to proceed.

Step 8
You will be asked to Save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to the same Pwnage folder.

Step 9
PwnageTool will start building your custom firmware. Wait until it’s done.

If prompted enter your Administrator password and click the OK button.

Step 10
When prompted if your iPhone has been Pwned before, Click No. It allows for a more thorough restore.

Step 11
You will be asked to turn OFF the device. Make sure it is connected to the USB port.

Step 12
NOTE: If you’re already jailbroken (by whatever means), you don’t need to mess around with DFU mode at all. Just create (or get from a friend) your custom IPSW and Option-Restore (Shift-Restore on Windows) to it via iTunes. Don’t enter DFU mode at all. Please make sure you are restoring to the custom IPSW, not the stock one from Apple! For best results, use the latest iTunes (9.0.1) — which includes a nice new application organizer.

If it’s the first time you’re jailbreaking your iPhone, Be ready to follow directions now to get into DFU Mode.

You will be asked to hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds.
Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds to enter DFU.

If you failed to follow the instruction, it will show you a message asking if you want to retry?. Click Yes.

Unplug the iPhone from the USB. Turn it OFF, then turn it back ON. Reconnect it to USB and turn OFF the iPhone when prompted.

When followed correctly, PwnageTool will display a message telling your that it successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will also pop-up.

Step 13
In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and hit Restore.

Step 14
from the popup window, browse to the Pwnage Folder and select you custom .ipsw file that you just created and click Open Button.

Step 15
iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPhone. This can also take up to 10 minutes.

When done. You have successfully Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 firmware.

Unlock iPhone 3GS, 3G 3.1.3 firmware

Now in Order to Unlock iPhone 3GS or 3G 3.1.3 firmware follow this old Guide which also works for OS 3.1.3 if you jailbreak iPhone using PwnageTool:

How to: jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 using PwnageTool

IMPORTANT

iPhone 3GS users (regardless of unlock) should stay away from this and all 3.1.3 jailbreak tools unless you know you have your “SHSH hashes” backed up via Cydia. That’s because if you make a mistake you may find yourself stuck at official 3.1.3 with no way to jailbreak or come back down to 3.1.2 to jailbreak.

If you really truly feel that you need to update, this version creates a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore to on your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS with early bootrom, iPod touch 1G, and iPod touch 2G with early bootrom. If you don’t know if you have an early bootrom or not, please avoid updating until you learn more.

You don’t need to be pre-jailbroken on anything but the iPod touch 2G early bootrom. And really for that device, it’s faster and easier to use redsn0w 0.9.4 as mentioned in our last post. For that matter, if you have an ipt1g, iphone2g, or iphone3g(and don’t need an unlock), you should use redsn0w too (but version 0.9.3). It’s faster and you won’t have to go through a full restore process (just do an update then run redsn0w, pointing it at 3.1.2 FW instead of 3.1.3).

If you have an iPhone 3GS, PwnageTool works if you’re currently at version 3.1.2 or below (down to 3.0). You don’t need to be already jailbroken — PwnageTool will ask you if you’re jailbroken after you’ve created the IPSW. Don’t use PwnageTool on the iPhone 3GS if you’re at 3.1.3, it just won’t work. Downgrade to 3.1.2 using the methods described here. If you can’t downgrade because you don’t have your 3GS 3.1.2 hashes on file with Cydia, you’ll need to sit out the 3.1.3 jailbreak.

From what Musclenerd, the member of the Dev-Team, has tweeted it seems very obvious that Dev-Team is working on PwnageTool for iPhone OS 3.1.3. This what Musclenerd has tweeted:

When PwnageTool is released for 3.1.3, 3G+3GS users please don’t rush to update. If 3.1.2 ain’t broke for you, stay there:)

Musclenerd is alerting all iPhone 3GS and 3G users who depend on unlock to not to rush for the firmware 3.1.3 even after the PwnageTool for firmware 3.1.3 is out. If iPhone OS 3.1.2 is working fine you should stay with it.

Apple pushed the latest iPhone OS 3.1.3 which comes with nothing special but minor bug fixes and security improvements. The iPhone firmware 3.1.3 also updated iPhone 3GS and 3G baseband to 05.12.01 which is NOT unlockable ATM. The best thing that PwnageTool offers is that when you update your iPhone firmware via PwnageTool it not only jailbreaks it but also preserves its baseband from updating. which means you can unlock your preserved baseband then.

We strongly suggest you to stick with iPhone OS 3.1.2 but if you eagerly want to go for OS 3.1.3 then atleast wait for PwnageTool for iPhone firmware 3.1.3. In this iPhone guide you will learn how to jailbreak iPhone 3GS, 3G running OS 3.2.1 using PwnageTool 3.1.4 on Mac OS X. This guide is for Mac users only because PwnageTool is available for Mac only and there’s no Windows version out there.

This Guide is for both iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. All steps for both models are same. The only difference is that for 3GS you need IPSW file for 3GS and in case of 3G you need IPSW for 3G to create Custom IPSW from it. Both files are linked in the guide.

IMPORTANT

If you’re still on OS 3.0 or updated to OS 3.1 using PwnageTool which means you’ve preserved you Baseband which means, along with jailbreak, you can Unlock your iPhone using UltraSn0w. On the other hand;

If you bought an iPhone with 3.1.x preinstalled or you have updated your iPhone to OS 3.1.2, you will be able to Jailbreak your iPhone only.

From Cydia and make sure you accept the option to store your ECID SHSH on Saurik’s server. It will put you on the safe side for future jailbreak. By doing this you’ll be able to downgrade to the firmware for which you saved your ECID SHSH on Saurik’s srver.

PwnageTool 3.1.4 Released to Jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.2

After BlackRa1n jailbreak for OS 3.1.2, Dev-Team has released their updated version of PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.2. Unlike BlackRa1n, PwnageTool preserves your Baseband to let you unlock your iPhone if you want to.

PwnageTool 3.1.4 now supports the iPhone 3GS OTB, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, iPod Touch (1st Gen and 2nd Gen). Sorry, no support for iPod Touch 3G for now. PwnageTool is for Mac OS X only.

Details:

PwnageTool supports the iPhone 3GS OTB. If you bought a new iPhone with 3.1.2 or updated your iPhone via iTunes, you will now be able to jailbreak your iPhone. But no Unlock, atleast for now.
Unlike BlackRa1n, PwnageTool does not update your Baseband which then let you unlock your iPhone using UltraSn0w. BlackRa1n jailbreaks your iPhone but also updates its Baseband so won’t be able to unlock it.
BlackRa1n brought a lot of bugs with it. If you have used BlackRa1n on your iPhone, still you can use custom firmware made with PwnageTool to get rid of all bugs.
If you’re using Tethering hack on your iPhone, you better stay away from updating because it will kill the tethering hack.
You can jailbreak iPod Touch 2G only if it was jailbroken before. No support for iPod Touch 3G jailbreak.
You can use PwnageTool made Custom firmwares in Windows environment but not the PwnageTool because it’s for MAC only.
There’s no info available on when will the Windows version of PwnageTool and Unlock for latest Baseband be available.

This iPhone tutorial is meant for MAC OS X and iPhone 3GS users Only.

IMPORTANT

This PwnageTool guide works for only those iPhone 3GS that are NOT already on OS 3.1. In other words this guide is for only those iPhone 3GS users who are currently on iPhone OS 3.0 or 3.0.1 and never got OS 3.1 on their 3GS.

Once you have successfully entered your iPhone 3GS into Recovery Mode, the iTunes logo and a cable will appear on your iPhone screenand iTunes will also popup saying it has detected an iPhone in Recovery Mode.

Click OK button.

In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and hit Restore.

Step 13
From the popup window, browse to the Pwnage Folder and select you custom .ipsw file that you just created (iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw) and click Open Button.

Step 14
iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPhone. This can also take up to 10 minutes.

When all done, You have successfully Jailbreak iPhone 3GS running iPhone OS 3.1.

As reported earlier that the Dev-Team is about to release an updated version of its PwnageTool that will let you Jailbreak iPhone 3GS.

Now is the time. Dev-Team has released PwnageTool 3.1.3 to Jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1. This updated version of PwnageTool adds support for iPhone 3GS and iPod Toucg 2G. The previous release of PwnageTool was supported with iPhone 3G and 2G only.

PwnageTool 3.1.3 will not support out of the box iPhone 3GS, which had iPhone OS 3.1 pre-installed or iPhone 3GS that had not been jailbroken or pwned earlier. for more details read the Dev-Team post below:

Here are some details on our latest version of PwnageTool for Mac OS X that adds support for the 3.1 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G.

SUMMARY:

The iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box. If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment.

The iPod 2G is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the iPod 2G was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the iPod 2G with 3.1 software out of the box.

DETAILS:

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.

PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.
For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.
There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

iPhone Dev-Team has released their updated version of PwnageTool 3.1 to Jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.

PwnageTool 3.1 currently supports, iPhone 2G (1st Gen iPhone), iPhone 3G and 1st gen iPod Touch only.

NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR 2G/3G IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.
If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw

Baseband 101

The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 3.1 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 3.1 using iTunes and then use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to jailbreak your phone.

iPhone 2G (1st Generation)

Use PwnageTool to do the magic and then restore with iTunes using your newly created .ipsw ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything, the baseband will be unlocked, the phone jailbroken.

iPod touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)

Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.

iPod touch 2G

Sorry, no support at this time within PwnageTool, use Redsn0w for an earlier (pre 3.1) firmware release instead.

Before the release of iPhone OS 3.1, the legendary iPhone Dev-Team had warned all the iPhone 3GS and 3G users who have jailbroken or unlocked their iPhone to stay away from this iPhone firmware update.

Now once again they have updated their blog and have added the best part for the jailbreak community. Now the Dev-Team blog says that we are working on PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1:

Remember, each upcoming firmware update not only update your iPhone OS but also its Baseband (Modem firmware). Once the iPhone Baseband is updated, it’s almost impossible to unlock your iPhone then.

There comes the PwnageTool to handle the Baseband. PwnageTool allows iPhone users to update to iPhone OS 3.1 while preserving the Baseband (Without updating Baseband). Once you remain on the same Baseband, it means you can use UltraSn0w to Unlock your iPhone.

Make sure you’re on Mac OS X 5.7 and running the latest iTunes 8.2 to Jailbreak iPhone 3G.

Create a folder on your desktop and name it: Pwnage. Then download the following files and put into Pwnage folder:

iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw (Download through Firefox because Safari often auto extracts ipsw file)

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G OS 3.0

Step 1
Double click PwnageTool dmg file to mount it

Click and drag the PwnageTool icon to Pwnage Folder you created and then open it from there.

Warning Box will Popup. Just hit the OK button.

Step 2

Make sure you select Expert Mode from Top menu

Step 3
Select your device i.e: iPhone 3G. A big Green check mark will appear on the selected device.
Now hit the big Blue Arrow button at bottom right to proceed.

Step 4
On the next page Pwnage Tool will automatically find the IPSW file. If not found then click “Browse for IPSW” button and select the downloaded IPSW file: iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw. A check mark will appear next to it.

Then hit Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Step 5
On the next page you will have 6 choices. Select the General and hit Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Step 6
On the next Page you can decide your Root Partition Size where OS resides. Click activate the phone and Disable partition wipe-out.

***For the 3.0 firmware you may have to increase the size of your root partition slightly for the IPSW build to be successful. 695MB worked just fine for me***
***If the Enable Baseband check box is not greyed out, checkmark it. This allows the unlock to occur!***

The Bootneuter settings are greyed out for the iPhone 3G. Click the blue arrow button.

The next screen will show the Cydia settings menu. It allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install them later.

When you have downloaded your desired packages, go back to Select Packages tab and check mark the ones you want.

then hit the Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Custom Packages Settings will displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. Leave these settings as is for now. Just click the Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

Click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step 7
Nowyou are ready to build your custom firmware. Click the build button to select it, then click the blue arrow button to proceed.

Step 8
When both Bootloader files are found, you will be asked to Save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to the same Pwnage folder.

Step 9
PwnageTool will start building your custom firmware. Wait until it’s done.

If prompted enter your Administrator password and click the OK button.

When prompted if your iPhone has been Pwned before, Click No. It allows for a more thorough restore.

You will be asked to turn OFF the device. Make sure it is connected to the USB port.

Step 10
Be ready to follow directions now.

You will be asked to hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds.
Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds to enter DFU.

When followed correctly, Pwnage 2.0 will display a message telling your that it successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will also pop-up.

Step 11
In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and hit Restore.

Step 12
from the popup window, browse to the Pwnage Folder and select you custom .ipsw file that you just created (iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Custom_Restore.ipsw) and click Open Button.

Step 13
iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPhone. This can also take up to 10 minutes.

When done. You have successfully Jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0.

This iPhone Guide is meant for MAC OS X users ONLY because PwnageTool is not yet supported with Windows and there’s no QuickPwn 3.0 out yet which supports Windows.

Make sure your iTunes is Latest 8.2 before stating Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 2G running iPhone OS 3.0. If it is not, go and upgrade it from here.

Then Hit the Blue Arrow Button to proceed.

When you have downloaded your desired packages, go back to Select Packages tab and check mark the ones you want.

If this is the first time doing this, you will be asked to upload the Bootloader 3.9 and Bootloader 4.6 files.

When prompted to search the web, click NO.

You will prompted to browse for the Bootloader v3.9 file. Click Yes then select the downloaded (BL-39.bin) file from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop and click the Open button.

Do the same for Bootloader v4.6.

***: After loading the 4.6 BL you may be asked if you’re a legit user. If you legally have AT&T or an iPhone plan in a different country, clicking yes will not unlock the iPhone and activate it as your legal plan already activates it and there is no need for an unlock. However if you wish to keep the iPhone unlocked, when asked if you’re a legit iPhone user, click NO.

Step10
When both Bootloader files are found, you will be asked to Save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to the same Pwnage folder.

Step 11
Pwnage will start building your custom firmware. Wait until it’s done.

If prompted enter your Administrator password and click the OK button.

When prompted if your iPhone has been Pwned before, Click No. It allows for a more thorough restore.

Be ready to follow directions now.

Please allow 5 minutes for this to complete. Your iPhone will restart once completed.

That’s it. You have jailbreak and Unlocked iPhone 2G running iPhone OS 3.0.
