How to unlock iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus if you paid in full

iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus are available to be purchased from online Apple Store, retail outlets, and carriers as well. In the first phase, Apple usually launches carrier-specific iPhone models followed by the unlocked models after about one to three months of the launch. This is why whenever Apple launches a new iPhone model, there seems to be confusion about whether an iPhone, which is paid in full, is factory unlocked or not. Well, we now have a confirmation.

Folks over at TheAppFactor reports that if you have bought an iPhone 6s or the iPhone 6s Plus from Apple and the device has been paid in full, it comes factory unlocked right off the box, and it requires a simple step from your end to confirm the unlock status. Unfortunately, this does not appear to be the case with iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s purchased from a carrier.

Even though, a fully paid iPhone 6s/Plus comes unlocked right off the box, there’s is still one simple step outlined below that you need to perform. After that your shiny new iPhone 6s or the 6s Plus will be unlocked and ready for any SIM card you place inside its SIM tray.

Here’s how to unlock your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus that is paid in full:

  1. Unbox your new iPhone and insert the SIM that came with it.
  2. Turn on your new iPhone 6s and plug it to your computer via USB cable.
  3. Launch iTunes and go through the typical device setup process which asks for the phone number, zip code, and last four digits of your social security number.
  4. Agree to the various terms, and finally you will see a message confirming that your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus has successfully been unlocked.

Before iPhone 6s, Apple did not offer the ay in full price option at the launch of any new iPhone model. Unlocked iPhones, however, were made available from Apple usually after a month or two of the launch.

If you bought an iPhone from a carrier and paid in full you’re still entitled to get it unlocked for free, but you cannot do it yourself. You need to contact your carrier and request an unlock for your iPhone. Since you have paid in full and not under any contract, your carrier should honor your unlock request.

Hi,

I bought a SE from Apple Store 5th Av a couple of weeks back. The guy mentionned to me it was a carrier/full price, not a factory unlocked one. I wanted to check if it was going to work. So we unboxed it and inserted my SIM, which was recognised straight away. I didn’t notice the above step when I activated the phone back in France and reloaded my settings using latest backup on iTunes. Has worked perfectly with my French SIM card since then.
