After months of rumors, reports, and speculations, Apple has finally announced its much-anticipated iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus during a media event held on September 9 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Some of the core new features on these 9th generation iPhone devices include 3D Touch (a pressure sensitive display), an all-new A9 processor with an M9 Motion Coprocessor, 12MP rear camera, a 5MP front-facing camera and a new Rose Gold color option.
iPhone 6s looks exactly like its predecessor, the iPhone 6, and the iPhone 6s Plus looks exactly like the iPhone 6 Plus. This is what we all expected from an “S” iPhone upgrade. All the “s” upgrade devices to date give the exact same look of their predecessors.
However, internally, both these new devices; iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus packs huge improvements to the hardware. Here’s an overview of what’s new in iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus.
Display: The size of the display in both the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus remains unchanged at 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch respectively. Same goes for the resolutions of both devices, which remains unaltered at 1334 x 750 pixels for the iPhone 6s and 1920 x 1080 pixels for the iPhone 6s Plus. The display is protected with ion-strengthened glass and oleophobic coating to deal with fingerprints.
A9 Processor and M9 motion coprocessor: The new generation iPhone models will feature an all new Apple A9 chip that also incorporates an M9 coprocessor. The M9 coprocessor makes the “Hey Siri!” command always-on a reality.
3D Touch: One of the best new features of iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus is its 3D Touch, which is a renamed version of the pressure sensitive technology first introduced with the Apple Watch. The technology can distinguish between a tap and a long press and responds accordingly. Using the 3D Touch, Apple has introduced shortcuts to various contextual settings on the iPhone 6s.
Cameras: Just what the rumors had said, iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus brings the biggest camera jump to the iPhone lineup. The new devices feature a 12MP main camera with capabilities of capturing 4K videos. The front-facing iSight camera now carries a 5MP camera sensor and a selfie flash – the whole screen will light up 3-times the normal brightness to act as a flash. The larger sibling also includes an optical image stabilizer.
Motion Wallpapers: yes, the reports were spot on. apple has introduced new motion wallpapers in its new iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus.
Live Photos: When you take a photo with an iPhone 6s, the phone cleverly saves some frames before and after you pressed the shutter, giving the image a GIF file like animation. All those captured frames will be in full 12MP glory.
