iPhone 6 Predictions: 4.7 and 5.5-inch models, A8 chip, 1GB RAM, NFC and more

Ming-Chi Kuo of the KGI Securities has released an extensive research note to investors outlining Apple’s roadmap for 2014 about the release of their new products. The note also offers details on each product that Apple will be releasing this year. Ming-Chi Kuo has a good track record when it comes to Apple’s products plan for the year based on his reliable supply chain connections and other sources. He had correctly predicted last years products lineup and the entire fall lineup in 2012. So, he’s one of those analysts who get much attention of the blogosphere and the investors.

For the year 2014, Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted the following product launches with detailed iPhone 6 specs:

Kuo agrees with the previous rumors that Apple is working on two different models of iPhone 6: a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch model. Both the models are said to have same internals but the display resolution will be different. He believes that 4.7-inch display will come with a 1334×750 resolution at 326ppi density, while the 5.5-inch will see a 1920×1080 resolution at 401 ppi.

Although the predicted display resolutions are odd, but it looks like both panels have the same aspect ratio as the iPhone 5 which means that developers won’t have to redesign their applications, just minor code changes will be required to make apps compatible with these upcoming models.

Kuo believes that iPhone 6 will be powered by the next-generation A8 chip with 1GB RAM and TouchID. Despite running A8 chip, it’s still disappointing that iPhone 6 will have just 1GB of RAM, because of low RAM mobile Safari reloads the web pages whenever you switch between tabs.

He also predicts slimmer bezels around the screen, almost 10-20% narrower, this makes sense as increase in display size won’t increase the device dimensions proportionally – making the larger devices easier to hold. He also expected iPhone 6 to be a lot thinner (6.5-7.0mm) than the iPhone 5S (7.6mm). Sleep/wake button is also believed to be moved from the top to the side, in an effort to make the larger devices easier to operate with one hand.

Kuo expectes iPhone 6 to feature an 8-mega pixel camera sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS) and f2.2 aperture.

Finally, Kuo also predicts an NFC chip included in both smartphones. 5.5-inch iPhone 6 is expected to feature a larger battery with up to 70% more watt-hours than the iPhone 5s, thanks to the additional real estate available inside the case due to a larger display.

Kuo predicts the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will go into production as early as May and will be the first one hitting the shelves in September. 5.5-inch variant will launch later in the holidays quarter. And for the other models, Kuo predicts an end for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models, phasing out the support for 30-pin connectors. However, the company will continue selling iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 as its low cost options.

iPhone 6 will most probably be launched with iOS 8 – the upcoming Apple’s mobile operating system. It’s worth mentioning again that despite a good track record, all of this intel comes from an analyst report, which means nothing is certain. Let us know what do you think about Apple’s upcoming products lineup? Are you excited to see a large screen iPhone 6?
