A couple of days ago, Apple pushed iOS 7.1.1 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users. As per official change-log, this latest iOS firmware update brought minor bug fixes and Touch ID improvement, but according as ZDNet’s Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, iOS 7.1.1 also brings huge improvements to the iPhone battery life.
Here’s the official change-log of iOS 7.1.1 which is pretty lackluster:
- Further improvements to Touch ID fingerprint recognition
- Fixes a bug that could impact keyboard responsiveness
- Fixes an issue when using Bluetooth keyboards with VoiceOver enabled
Apart from the above mentioned changes, Apple may have also added some sizable software optimizations to iOS 7.1.1, as Adrian Kingsley-Hughes is seeing a dramatic impact on his iPhone 5?s battery life. Here’s what he claims:
However, following iOS 7.1, I started seeing the battery drop to around 48 percent per six hours of use, which was a significant and very noticeable level of degradation.
…
Then came iOS 7.1.1. Following this update I’ve noticed that things have improved dramatically, and now battery life is only falling to around 76 percent per six hours of average use, which is better than what I was getting pre iOS 7.0.
The writer mentions that he has been keeping track of his iPhone 5’s battery performance since iOS 6 and notes that iOS 7.1.1 brings the major battery life improvements to his iPhone 5 to date. Some other sources have also notice battery life improvements on their iPhone and iPad, though the improvements were not as drastic as noticed by ZDNet’s writer.
iOS 7.1.1 is not jailbroken at this point in time, so it’s highly recommended to avoid this iOS update if you cannot live without jailbreak. For all others, battery life improvements might be a solid reason to upgrade to Apple’s latest iOS 7.1.1 firmware.
