Hit the jump for detailed step-by-step instructions for iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak with RedSn0w

Notes:

  • RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 Supports iOS 6.0.1 on A4 devices (iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G) and iPhone 3GS only.
  • RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 provides tethered iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak. Which means each time your reboot your iPhone/iPod Touch you’ll need to tether boot using “Just Boot” option in RedSn0w. Learn more about: tether jailbreak.
  • RedSn0w does NOT support iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 4/3/2, iPad mini or iPod Touch 5G.

How to jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 with RedSn0w

Before beginning the jailbreak process, it’s always a good idea to backup your personal data.

Downloads

Step 1 – Update to iOS 6.0.1

Update to iOS 6.0.1. You can do so via OTA (over-the-air) or using iTunes. Follow our guide on how to update to iOS 6.0.1.

Important: If you depend on UltraSn0w or Gevey SIM unlock you MUST follow our guide on how to update to iOS 6.0.1 without updating baseband instead.

Step 2 – Point RedSn0w to iOS 6

Execute the RedSn0w, and click on Extras button;
Now click on “Select IPSW” button;

Browse and selecte the downloaded iOS 6 IPSW file (NOT iOS 6.0.1);

RedSn0w should recognize the selected IPSW file. Click Ok button;

For iPhone 3GS, it’ll show another popup asking if your iPhone 3GS has new or old bootrom and also explains how to check bootrom version. also checkout our guide on how to check iPhone 3GS bootrom.

Step 3 – Jailbreak iOS 6.0.1

Now go back to the main screen of RedSn0w and click on “Jailbreak” button;
After some processing, RedSn0w will present you with numerous options. Choose Cydia and hit Next to jailbreak your device. Select “Deactivate” Option only if you’ve the official carrier SIM

Now Turn OFF you device and click the Next button;

Follow the on screen instruction to put your iPhone/iPod Touch into DFU mode:

  • Hold down the Power (corner) button for 3 seconds;
  • Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home button for 10 seconds
  • Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button BUT keep holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Redsn0w will begin jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch as soon as your device is into DFU Mode.
Once the jailbreak process is complete, Redsn0w will prompt your that this is a tethered jailbreak and you need to tethered boot your device upon each reboot.

Step 4 – Tethered boot

Go back to home screen of RedSn0w and click on Extras;
Now click on Select IPSW, browse and select iOS 6 IPSW file (Not iOS 6.0.1);
Redsn0w should identify the slected iOS 6 IPSW file.

Now click on “Just Boot” button;
Turn OFF your device and click Next;

Follow the on screen instruction to put your iPhone/iPod Touch into DFU mode:

  • Hold down the Power (corner) button for 3 seconds;
  • Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home button for 10 seconds
  • Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button BUT keep holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Once your device is in DFU mode RedSn0w will perform a tethered boot. Your device should reboot with a pineapple logo. Once the device is back ON, you should see Cydia icon on the home screen. If you don’t see it, you probably didn’t boot tethered, which is required.

Then continue as normal

just upgraded my mother’s 3gs via itunes to 6.0.1 then I jailbroken as shown above. Powered phone off and back on and all seems to be working fine, not sure why it’s untethered!!! modem firmware is 05.16.07 version 6.0.1 (10A523)
just need an unlock now as I upgraded before coming here first 🙁 might have to pay O2 for official unlock.

I Jailbroke my 3gs yesterday, and everything worked fine until this morning, then it had shut down. I tried a tethered boot with redsn0w and it looked like everything was going fine on the computer, but my phone just went white screen…. I have pretty much tried everything I could think of, including all instructions I could find on the internet, but to no avail. For gods sake it worked yesterday!!! ?

Help please!

Why not update to 6.1 and use the latest jailbreak tools:
http://www.iphoneheat.com/2013/02/jailbreak-iphone-5-4s-4-3gs-ios-61-evasi0n/

If you’re Ultrasn0w or gevey dependent, use Sn0wbreeze instead:
http://www.iphoneheat.com/2013/02/jailbreak-ios-61-sn0wbreeze-iphone-4-3gs-ipod-touch-4g/

Jollyphone February 7, 2013, 2:58 am

Thank you for replying!
I updated to 6.1 before I jailbroke, and pointed ispw to 6.0.1 in redsn0w. I tried Evasi0n but it said something like : This phone is already jailbroken and recommended me NOT to proceed.
So… I cannot upgrade because it is already 6.1, and none of the downgrade “how to’s” have worked, itunes gives me error 1600 an sometimes error 28.
However, I see I am not completely alone with this problem, others also have problems with 3gs and this jailbreak. phone turns off after a while when you unplug it, and then refuses to start up again.

The thing that puzzles me is that Redsn0w does not report any error on bootup, it is going through the motions as usual, but I am stuck looking at a white screen.

iPhoneHeat February 8, 2013, 12:04 am

as per my understanding, your phone is stuck ona white screen. Yes? then do this

Put your iPhone into DFU Mode.. http://www.iphoneheat.com/2009/04/how-to-put-iphone-in-dfu-mode/

clean Restore iOS 6.1 via iTunes: http://www.iphoneheat.com/2012/09/how-to-update-to-ios-6/

use Evasion to jailbreak: http://www.iphoneheat.com/2013/02/jailbreak-iphone-5-4s-4-3gs-ios-61-evasi0n/

Ank@ tech news April 29, 2013, 10:29 pm
