iOS 5 or 5.0.1 won’t let you play YouTube Videos in HD. Thanks to this little hack, you can enable YouTube HD video playback in iOS 5 over 3G network. SonnyDickson is the man who discovered this new feature ‘HQ 3G Playback’ in iOS 5/5.0.1, disabled by default.
Hit the jump to learn how to enable YouTube HD Video playback over 3G…
Just by editing a .plist file, you will be able to turn ON and OFF the HQ 3G Playback feature. It does not require your device to be jailbroken. Here’s how to do it:
Enable YouTube HD Video Playback in iOS 5 over 3G
Connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to your computer, open iTunes and backup your iDevice by right clicking on the device from the left navigation pane.
Download iBackupBot [Download Link] and Install it.
Now launch the iBackupBot, find the backup you took in Step 1, Load it.
Go to: Library/Preferences/com.apple.youtubeframework.plist and open the file.
(if your software isn’t registered you’ll have to press cancel and then it will open)
Now to activate HD YouTube video playback over 3G, add in the following code to the file:
Save & Close the file.
Now right click on the backup (you just modified) within iBackupbot and Restore.
Your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch will reboot. If everything is done correctly, YouTube HD playback over 3G ‘HQ 3G Playback’ should be enabled in your iOS 5 running iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
