Jailbreak iOS 5 with RedSn0w
Your detailed guide to jailbreak iOS 5 using RedSn0w jailbreak on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod Touch 4G, 3G. MuscleNerd has confirmed that the current RedSn0w can jailbreak iOS 5 *tethered* on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
For those who didn’t know, tethered jailbreak means you’ll have to plug in your device to your computer every time it reboots to boot it again into the jailbreak state. RedSn0w has a “Just Boot” option available in Redsn0w.
IMPORTANT
- It’s a tether jailbreak.
- RedSn0w doesn’t support iPad 2 yet. iPad 2 jailbreak is expected within few weeks along with iPhone 4S iOS 5 jailbreak.
Step 1
Download the required files:
Step 2
Make sure you’ve installed iTunes 10.5 or later, then connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and backup your personal data before restoring to iOS 5.
Gevey SIM or UltraSn0w Unlockers, you need to preserve your baseband in order to unlock with UltraSn0w or Gevey SIM. Follow this guide to preserve iPhone baseband while updating to iOS 5 and then skip to Step 3 (avoid Stock firmware):

Connect your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad to iTunes 10.5 or later, hold down the Shift (Windows) or Alt/Option (Mac) key and hit the restore button on iTunes and select the downloaded iOS 5 IPSW file.
Step 3
Once the restore process is completed;
- Run RedSn0w,
- Click on Extras button
- Now click on Select IPSW button
- Browse and select the downloaded iOS 5 IPSW file
- Hit the Back button.
Step 4
Now make sure your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is turned OFF and Plugged in to your computer. Hit Next.
Now follow the on-screen instructions to enter your device in DFU mode.
- Hold Down The Power (Corner) button for 3 Seconds
- Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home (Bottom Center) button for 10 seconds
- Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button BUT KEEP holding the Home button for 15 seconds
Step 5
Click on Jailbreak and then check mark the Install Cydia option.
As soon as your iDevice enters DFU Mode, RedSn0w will start jailbreaking it, which should be completed within few minutes. That’s it!
Like I told you earlier, it’s a tether jailbreak which requires you to connect your iPhone to the PC in order to boot it after each reboot. Here’s how to can tether boot iPhone with RedSn0w:
Tethered Boot iOS 5
- Run the Redsn0w
- Hit Extras, then Just Boot.
- Hit next, follow the on-screen instructions to enter into DFU mode.
This should boot your device. Don’t forget to repeat the tether boot process evertime you reboot your device.

That’s probably because you’re using the wrong version of redsn0w. Make sure you’re using version 0.9.9b5, not 0.9.9b4.

I managed to create a new custom firmware thru redsn0w. However, when trying to restore to that custom firmware thru itunes, I get a “iPhone is not eligible for the requested build”. Am I missing something here??

I lost all of my cracked applications, my music, my books thanks to this JB… how am I gonna get them back?
I’m guessing you were a good boy/girl and backed up Cydia with AptBackup and all your “cracked” app settings are either in a backup on iTunes or (my preferred) a manual backup with something like DiskAid.
If not, then have those in mind next time friend.
Oh and your music and books should be forever on iTunes library, if not probably you used something like iPhoneBrowser to add them into the iPhone?
Well yeah, I’ve backed up all my files before going into the JBing part. Like you said, they were all stored somewhere coz when I JBkn the phone I have to download my previous apps all over again, but the datas are still there.
About the music.. well I don’t know but it seems like all of them are gone after I’ve dld the latest version of iTunes, 10.5 that is…and no I didn’t use anything like iPhoneBrowser whatsoever, just plain ol’ drag n drop ^^

I just updated to iOS 5 my iphone 4 BB 04.10.01
It went alright, Gevey Sim unlock still working… However, i can´t use the data network of my phone. It means that I can only use Wi-fi.

I have upgraded to 5.0 on my 3GS by using Snowbreeze and selected the hacktivate option so that the phone is activated and gets to the Home screen.
But now it wont recognise my sim card – it just says ‘No Service’ at the moment. Do I need to unlock it or something? I thought Snowbreeze would have done that?
My settings are:
Version = 5.0 (9A334)
Model = MC135ZP
Modem Firmware = 05.16.05
Does anyone know how I can get my sim to work again???

nope..
updated to iso 5 (9a334)firmware and followed the instructions it start to install all the way to upload second stage then i get exploit failed. modem firmware 04.11.08 ( i think that’s the base band ?) i also tried snowbreeze i get it to install cydia but it won’t let me ibooty restart it in tethered. you have any idea whats going on? i’m running window xp sp2. i don’t know how to get it to run in administrator. there is no option when you right click on redsn0w for administrator. Please help? Before i upgrade to ISO5 i was running 4.3.1 untethered on the iphone 4 if this help at all….
