Downgrade iOS 4.3 to iOS 4.2.1, iOS 4.1 (iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch, iPad)

You can downgrade iOS 4.3 to iOS 4.2.1 / 4.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod Touch 4G, 3G and iPad. Follow the steps below to downgrade iOS 4.3 to 4.2.1/4.1 firmware on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
downgrade iOS 4.3 iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod Touch
If you’ve updated to iOS 4.3 beta to test it but now want to go back to iOS 4.2.1 or 4.1, this guide is for you. We’ll discuss following two methods to downgrade iOS 4.3 iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch firmware:

  1. Using TinyUmbrella (Recommended)
  2. By Editing Hosts file

IMPORTANT: You can downgrade iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch, iPad only if you have SHSH blobs saved for 4.1/4.2.1 firmware in order to downgrade from iOS 4.3.

How to: Save SHSH blobs for iPhone, iPod Touch

How to Downgrade iOS 4.3 to iOS 4.2.1, iOS 4.1

Download your desired firmware for which you’ve SHSH blobs saved and want to downgrade to:

Method 1: Using TinyUmbrella

If you’ve SHSH blobs saved on Saurik’s server via Cydia, download them into your computer first. To do that:

  1. Connect your device, Fire up the TinyUmbrella and Check mark the Advanced Options.
  2. Select your devicefirmware (the one for which you’ve SHSH saved at Cydia; 4.2.1, 4.1 or older) and Cydia as Location.
  3. Hit the save My SHSH button. that’s it.

Step 1 – DFU Mode

Put your iPhone into DFU Mode (How to: enter DFU Mode)

Step 2 – Start TSS Server

  1. Run the TinyUmbrella
  2. Hit the Display SHSH button to confirm that downloaded SHSH blobs has been cached by TinyUmbrella for iOS 4.2.1, 4.1 or older. (If you already have them in your PC, drag and drop the SHSH blobs in the TinyUmbrella window then hit the display SHSH blobs button to confirm).
  3. Now hit the Start TSS Server button.

Step 3 – Restoring The Firmware

  1. Open the iTunes.
  2. Hold down the Shift (Windows)/Alt (Mac) key and hit the Restore button.
  3. Select the downloaded firmware (iOS 4.2.1, iOS 4.1 or older) and let the restore process complete.

iTunes should bring up the error 10151013 or 1011 message. Don’t worry, it’s normal. You’ve successfully downgraded your iPhone/iPod Touch firmware.

downgrade ios 4.3

Step 4 – Getting Out Of Recovery

Now in order to get out of recovery mode, hit the “Kick Device Out of Recovery” button on TinyUmbrella right below the Start TSS Server button or you can also use RecBoot. That’s it!

Method 2: Edit Hosts File

**We assume that you’ve SHSH blobs saved via Saurik’s server.

Download your desired firmware for which you’ve SHSH blobs saved and want to downgrade:

Step 1 – DFU Mode

Put your iPhone into DFU Mode (How to: enter DFU Mode)

Step 2 – Editing Hosts File

Now we are going to redirect iTunes from Apple Servers to Saurik’s server.

Windows:

Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and locate hosts file.
Open the hosts file in Notepad.
NOTE: Win 7 and Vista users MUST run Notepad with admin privileges. Right click on Notepad app and select Run as Administrator.

Mac OS X:

Go to \etc\ directory and locate hosts file. Copy it on your desktop
Open the hosts file in TextEdit.

Add the following line at the end of the hosts file and then save and close the file:

74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Mac OS X users needs to copy the edited hosts file from desktop back to /etc/ directory and replace the older one.

Step 3 – Restoring The Firmware

  1. Now Open the iTunes.
  2. Hold down the Shift (Windows)/Alt (Mac) key and hit the Restore button.
  3. Select the downloaded firmware (iOS 4.1, iOS 4.0.1 or older) and let the restore process complete.

iTunes will bring up error 10151013 or 1011 message.

That’s it!

Note: You must now remove 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com line from the host file and save it. Doing this will let iTunes to prompt you about future updates from Apple.

does this delete everything on my phone? (does it restore my phone)

  2. timo 18 January 2011 at 6:27 pm #

i do upgrade my 3gs to 4.2.1 and it’s locked .. can i upgrade it to 4.3 and then downgrade it to 4.1 so i can unlock it ?

    • iPhoneHeat 18 January 2011 at 6:48 pm #

unlock depends on baseband, once the baseband is updated, it can’t be downgraded with iOS/firmware downgrade

      • Musclenerd 18 January 2011 at 9:27 pm #

        No

        • AfRoO 19 January 2011 at 1:03 pm #

          what is ur baseband, version

    • lenjung 16 February 2011 at 1:58 pm #

So… meaning if a phone is on baseband 6.15 there is no way to downgrade the baseband? Even with SHSH blobs?

  3. rockstar 18 January 2011 at 10:34 pm #

i have iphone 4 with 4.1 and 2.10… can i just do as u said.. like u know i can upgrade it to 4.2.1 and then i saw that 3gs users can upgrade and unlock… by the same procedure can i work out that

    • Smitty 19 January 2011 at 10:23 am #

If you have baseband 2.10, you can’t unlock. Stay where you are on IOS 4.1 until a future unlock is released.

  4. userFromTurkey 18 January 2011 at 11:50 pm #

Remember for unlockers: You cannot downgrade baseband (BB) !!!

  5. sukhbira 19 January 2011 at 5:29 am #

hi my name is sukhbir and i have
    Iphone 3Gs
    Model MC134X/A
and i had not saved 4.1 shsh files. when i buy my iphone.installed
    firmware is 4.2.1 and
    BB version 06.15.00
as u said i edit host file and start tss server with tinyumbrella and then with itunes i try to restore firmware 4.1 but itunes give me error that itunes could not restore the iphone(error21).
please tell me that is it possible to restore firmware 4.1?

well i am also so much thankful to u that with this my iphone is untethered. thanx alot :)

    • iPhoneHeat 19 January 2011 at 1:55 pm #

There’s no point in downgrading now.. n You can NOT without SHSH blobs..
use RedSn0w latest beta to jailbreak (tethered)
      and use ultraSn0w to unlock..

I have upgraded my iPad 3G to 4.3 and have my shsh saved. I tried both methods to downgrade to 4.2.1 and got 1015 error as expected. The problem is that I cannot kick out of recovery mode. I tried tinyumbrella, ireb, recboot but no luck. I used Mac and pc but still stuck. I now upgraded back to 4.3 and I await your expert advise. Joe

    • srk5816 15 February 2011 at 10:11 am #

I have the same problem iOS4.3 beta and cannot downgrade using either method.

      • jessjess52 10 April 2011 at 8:57 am #

I had the same problem. I’m not entirely sure how to explain my fix but this is what I did. I downloaded greenpois0n jailbreak and while i was still plugged in and while the phone was still in recovery mode (plug arrow to itunes logo) I followed the jailbreak instructions. It ran the jailbreak successfully and rebooted. After reboot I closed Itunes. I unplugged the phone. when it rebooted I still had the usb -> itunes logo so i plugged it in and it asked me to restore from a previous back up. Ran it from my last backup and all is well now.

  7. sukhbira 19 January 2011 at 6:41 pm #

:( my iphone stuck in recovery mode.. i try to restore firmware 4.2.1 but at last itunes give error21. i try IREB to kick out recovery mode. even i use redsnow also. but no gain. tinyumbrella gives me warning that DONT TRY TO RESTORE YOUR IPHONE. what is this? how can i solve this?

and thanx for answering my first questions IPHOHEHEAT :)

  8. sukhbira 20 January 2011 at 4:50 pm #

    hi
my iphone 3gs MC134X stuck on recovery logo.
because my am trying to downgrade 6.15.00 from 4.2.1 to 4.1
my bootrom is new but by mistake i click on new when redsnow ask for bootrom. then i start tinyumbrella and start tss server and otherside i trying to restore firmware 4.1 and the last itunes give error 2003 and 1015.
am trying so many times to kick out ofdfu mode with tinyumbrella and recboot but no gain. am also trying to use redsnow ipod baseband but same problem, iphone stuck on recovery logo. please help me. how can i solve this problem? is my iphone dead for always?

    • Smitty 20 January 2011 at 10:27 pm #

Since you have 6.15 bb you can restore using custom firmware only that maintains your baseband.
If you have a mac, use pwnagetool to make custom firmware, or you can download it here thanks to iphoneheat
      http://www.iphoneheat.com/2010/10/download-custom-ios-4-1-firmware-ipsw/
you must have your shsh saved, and use tiny umbrella or modify hosts file.

    • hundebellen 21 January 2011 at 3:25 am #

same issue here. didn’t save the SHSH blobs. Any idea what to do or do I have to bin mu iPhone now?

      • Smitty 21 January 2011 at 10:19 am #

Try ireb, redsnow to kick out of recovery.
You try the solution below that sukhbira posted.
Without the shsh saved you can only upgrade, not downgrade. And with 6.15bb you must upgrade using only custom firmware to preserve baseband. Your only option is to restore to custom 4.2.1 firmy. If it works, go to cydia and save shsh!

  9. vitruvi0ne 20 January 2011 at 10:36 pm #

iPad here too stuck on recovery screen when trying to downgrade to 4.2.1. Unable to kick out of recovery period! I believe this is a first for me, and I’ve tried just about every beta for the iPad. Could this be some form of new protection? I too am able to flash back up to 4.3 and boot successfully. I’d be fine with that if only I could jailbreak this version.

  10. Danny 21 January 2011 at 1:44 am #

Same issue. Try to downgrade 4.3 to 4.2.1, each time the 1015 error can not be fixed via any tool. Forever in recovery mode.

Thanks, but… has anyone had success getting this to work with an iPad. I’ve attempted it: creating custom ipsw with PwnageTool from iPad 4.2.1 bundle, launch restore and get further in the process but still fail, then having to run a script to fix the ramdisk? That’s where it fails for me. Getting a little hard now. Am I doing something wrong??

  13. Izzy 5 February 2011 at 9:24 am #

You can spoof downgrade BB if you can reprgram iPhone having the knowledge of IPSW code. Also you can get it ulocked for under $30 online. There are many websites that will do it.

    Hi
My iPhone 3GS was tried jailbreak and unlock with iOS 4.2.1 and bb 6.15. Got stucked and recovered by iOS 4.2.1 custom restore firmware. The current shsh after bb update is stored now.

Now the problem is when I tried downgrading to iOS 4.1 getting the error 3194 and not allowing to downgrade. With iOS and bb (4.2.1 / 6.15) can’t able to jb and unlock. Your help is highly appreciated. Thx.

    Sam

    • rockstar 6 February 2011 at 3:22 pm #

      hey buddy,
i also got the same thing when i was doing so and , all u should do is open C drive and go to windows>system32>drivers>etc>hosts> right click that and open as admininstrator and paste this “74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com” at the end of the page and save this and try restoring this. ull be able to do it… and unlock the same.. ohlaaaa

  15. Brian 9 February 2011 at 1:18 am #

If you’re downgrading from 4.3 beta 3 to 4.2.1 on the iPad and you can’t get rid of the 1015 error or exit out of recovery, run GreenPois0n RC5. Chances are you are just stuck in recovery but still on 4.2.1. This seemed to work for me :) Which was really my reason for downgrading anyway… to get my jailbreak back. haha

  16. Vreo 10 February 2011 at 5:34 am #

Hi, I have a big problem. I installed 4.3 beta. I have my shsh backed up at saurik (cydia) servers and even locally with TinyUmbrella 4.21.07. I have tried via saurik servers (hosts file) and with TinyUmbrella’s server. I keep getting error 1015 over and over. I tried the “Error 1015 fixer” after installing the libusb filters and nothing. I tried “kicking” out of recovery mode the Ipad with TinyUmbrella and it restarts to the same “connect to iTunes” logo. I have restored with the original .ipsw 4.2.1, I have tried again the 4.3 ipsw and nothing with neither. I think one big problem is that when I connect the device, in Tiny Umbrella the ECID is different each time I connect it (Dec and Hex) and it is never the same as the original one, I don’t know why this happened. I tried another computer with a clean install of itunes and nothing. I have read lots of forums and tutorials and everyone seems to be going out of the restore (or DFU) modes easilly after that restore but I cant. My Ipad was first jailbreaken with redsnow but later I restored it to factory settings because I didn’t liked it jailbroken, so when I installed the FW 4.3 it was not jailbreaken. Sorry to bother, hope someone can help me.

  19. MattyBur 11 March 2011 at 1:37 pm #

If I downgrademy iPhone4 to 4.2.1, from 4.3, will it erase everything on my phone, like music, apps, photos, contacts etc, or keep them intact?

Also, does this work without jailbreaking the phone, because I’d rather not do that.

Only reason I want to downgrade is because my favourite app, Polarize, is now broken in 4.3 and the developer stopped working on it some time ago, so there’ll never be a compatible update.

    Thanks

    Matt

    • jbetts 3 September 2011 at 12:54 pm #

I have successfully downgraded my iPhone 3GS to 4.1 from 4.3.5, without any SHSH blobs, due to battery drain issues.

It appears Apple are still signing 4.1 for 3GS.

      Step 1:
      Put phone in DFU mode.
      Step 2:
Restore firmware using iTunes (as above)
      Step 3:
Use TinyUmbrella to get out of restore mode after a 1015 error. [I had to disconnect the iPhone from the computer after using TinyUmbrella.

Now restore from backup sync etc using iTunes.

updated to 4.1 i didn’t mind about carrier unlock so got the new baseband with 4.1 of 02.10.04.
then updated to 4.3.3 with baseband 04.10.01,
now i’m looking to sell phone soonish, so i tried to restore 4.0.1 using the correct method of ireb, tinyumbrella, then itunes, i can restore to 4.0.1 okay but my baseband stays at 04.10.01
    ssh in tinyumbrella are:
    4.0.1
    4.0.2
    4.1
4.2.1 & so on upto 4.3.5 even though i have not installed 4.3.5
    Totally confused

My iPhone 4 currently in DFU mode. I tried to update my ios from 4.2.1 to 4.3.3 with snowbreeze 2.7.3. But when i restore custom firmware an unknown error occurred (3195). My baseband was 03.10.01. I am afraid may be I choose wrong option. Is there any process to solve my problem? Can I upgrade my baseband so i can unlock with ultrasnow.. ?

What is the point in all this DOWNGRADING since on its own it does not have anything to do with the base band, to what it all boils down to in unlocking?
I have 4.3.3. iPhone with 4.10.01. if I at any moment felt like downgrading it to 4.2.1 …or anything it is not going to do anything about the baseband which stays the same… bollocks!!!

is there any option to alter the 4.10.01? no matter whether by downgrading or …something to get the frequency adapted?

      hi,
By downgrading & using tiny umbrella you can change the baseband only if you have saved some files “SSH BLOBS”
so therefore being able to get a carrier unlock.
there is no frequency work around, there is a geavey sim
but i’m not that worried about an unlcock.
i di buy one but i don’t want that & my sim in my phone thanks..

there should be a tiny umbrella sometime soonish that ill allow it to be much easier to inter swap firmwares & basebands.
