SAM and RedSn0w 0.9.6b6, together, will help you fix the battery drain issue incurred after hacktivating iOS 4.2.1/4.1 with RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 or PwnageTool 4.1.3.

Problem with hacktivation is the Push Notifications. iOS 4.1/4.2.1 keeps on using Cellular data connection in search for valid push certificates which they never find thus battery drains pretty fast. However, when you activate using official SIM card or Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM), you’ll get fully working push notifications plus optimum battery performance.

How to Activate iPhone Officially Without Official SIM

Step 1

Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 for Windows
Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 for Mac
Download iOS 4.2.1
Download iOS 4.1

Step 2

Jailbreak iPhone using any one of the guides linked below:

How to Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1/4.1 with RedSn0w 0.9.6b6
How to Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1/4.1 with PwnageTool 4.1.3

Step 3

After jailbreaking your iPhone; Open Cydia and add the following repo: http://repo.bingner.com (How to add repo to Cydia)

Step 4

Go to your just added repo/source and install the following two packages:

SAM
SAMPrefs

Step 6

Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch Redsn0w 0.9.6b6
Browse your iPhone firmware (iOS 4.2.1 or iOS 4.1) and hit next
Just select Deactivate option and hit next.
Follow the on screen instructions to complete RedSn0w steps.
Once RedSn0w has done its thing, your iPhone will be back to stock lockdownd condition.

Step 7

On your iPhone, Go to Settings > SAM and hit the De-Activate iPhone button. Then Simply connect to iTunes to Activate your iPhone.

***If iTunes says invalid SIM, you will need to manually select the appropriate carrier (from where your purchased the iPhone) under one of the methods besides “Automatic” and click on a SIMID.
***If you installed SAM and manually set your carrier but it is not working, please be sure you clicked on the SIM ID-even if there is only one.

This instruction is a bit misleading. It says first install SAM, deactivate, activate on iTunes, and then unlock the phone with Ultrasnow. However (at least on my 3G), it is not possible to activate the iPhone with SAM until Ultrasnow is not applied – iTunes gives 1631.

Now, after 3G was first unlocked with Ultrasnow and only then activated with SAM, the battery is still draining and no GPS too (though, latter wasn’t supposed to be fixed by SAM, so it’s OK).

So, after not sure – what’s the value of installing SAM right now (btw, it looks differently from what’s on the screenshot – looks like development is ongoing, which is good).

Before activating your iPhone, check your mailbox for existing unheard messages and note all the important information. When your iPhone is activated, your current voicemail messages and greetings will be deleted.

Everything worked well until step 7 (except for the missing step 5). The screens in SAM look different and the phone never deactiveated (or unlocked) and itunes didn’t ask me to activate. Grrrrr. Phone still acting wacky and draining the battery like crazy.
Help!!

  Good morning.
  Dude do not know what your problems with your machine, but here are some tips, worked with me.
  1 – Your iPhone is 3G or 3G?
  2 – The BB is it that requires a current update to the BB Skins?
  3 – Have you upgraded from 4.2.1 to IOS?
  If there is no way out of everything you need to update your BB to the Skins.
  4 – For the love of God, if your old iPhone has a BB, do nothing what I mean below. In this case (BB OLD) you should catch the BB to be able to upgrade without needing to move the BB (in this case need not update the BB’s Skins). In order to stop the BB you should use the “TinyUmbrella” and other programs …
  If this is not the case, back to the steps:
  1 – Get a computer (preferably a Windows XP);
  2 – Download again IOS 4.2.1 (iPhone 3G) or IOS 4.3.3 (iPhone 3G), be careful you do not have trouble downloading this file;
  3 – Download Redsn0w corresponding again to unlock (remember that as an exit, and again, if I remember correctly the “Redsn0w 0.9.6rc16,” but I believe that only serve to iPhone 3G);
  4 – Place your iPhone in FDU so, open iTunes, and with the “SHIFT” key and click “RESTORE”, locate the IOS 4.2.1 (iPhone 3G) or IOS 4.3.3 (iPhone 3G). Now wait for the installation of the IOS;
  5 – Then open the Redsn0w and run it;
  6 – There will be Cydia button, select it;
  7 – Make the procedure requires that the program (downloaded locate the IOS and place the device in order FDU);
  8 – Wait for the installation and then restart the machine (already jailbroken), reopen the Redsn0w and run again;
  9 – In this step you will have to check the BB Skins (this time will change your BB for the Skins). If you want to select one that you like, but it is not necessary;
  10 – Do it again (find IOS downloaded and place the unit in order FDU) Wait for the entire procedure and then restart it;
  11 – At this time it will open the “Cydia”, click “Source” and then add (add) and install the “repository”: “http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com.” After you have installed the corresponding unlock for your iPhone;
  12 – Once again the “Source” and add and install the “http://bingner.com/
  13 – Probably do not need the “www” between the “http://” and the repository;
  14 – Then go to the repository you just added and install and install the “SAM” and SAMPrefs. ”
  15 – seen on the internet that there is a repository that install all possible repositories for cydia. To install is the same procedure and add: http://apt.steffwiz.com/dists/steffwiz/main/binary-iphoneos-arm/; Once again the “Source” and find “All Sources” and install it.

  Good morning.
  I understand your iPhone 3G is, right?
  For the 3G does not support the IOS 4.3.3.
  There is a “Redsn0w 0.9.6rc16″, which is well advanced and probably solve your problem and then just follow all the steps I posted earlier. Please only take if necessary. There, do it again so that an error can be corrected (there were some home).
  Do not forget the Skins to your BB device may have different behavior than before. The GPS can not work and there may be an increased battery consumption, but do not forget that the problem may be your battery.
  Hint: do it again, unfortunately.

So I tried all the above steps…..

Under SAMSPrefs do I have to enter carrier and country and click SIMID for making Imessage and push work?

I have a 3GS jailbroken via redsnow and then unlocked via ultrasnow and now only need Imessage and push to work?

Also my phone doesnt activate via itunes

I tried the above method but after running the deactivation process through redsnow my iphone doesn’t go back to locked state. I’m still getting signals..also my iphone 3gs 4.2.1 BB 6.15.00 was produced 14th week but redsnow says its new fixed version. i ran it as such. Could that be the problem?? Somebody help me please????

  Works on iOS 5.0.1, just the install is extremely slow (takes a few hours and the phone looks like its dead). Then it reboots and after install Ultrasn0w it works fine on both iPhone 3Gs (iPad bb) and iPhone 4 (01.59).

guys i am trying to unlock using sam but i keep getting dis msg activation info rejected. you must select the original carrier simid of your phone. help what should be done
