Jailbreak iPhone 3GS/3G iOS 4.2.1 and Update to Baseband 06.15.00 with RedSn0w 0.9.6b5

advertisement

Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 can jailbreak iOS 4.2.1/4.1 and update iPhone 3GS / 3G baseband to 06.15.00 which is unlockable with UltraSn0w 1.2. Those iPhone 3GS/3G users stuck with Baseband 05.15.04 & 05.14.04 need to update baseband to the iPad baseband 06.15.00.

Fortunately, RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 comes with the feature to jailbreak and also update iPhone 3GS/3G baseband to 16.15.00 to unlock with UltraSn0w 1.2. RedSn0w is available for both Windows and Mac OS X. PwnageTool 4.1.3 also does the same thing and prompts if you want to update baseband, however, it supports Mac OS X only.

IMPORTANT: If you do flash your baseband via redsn0w, please keep it plugged into USB the whole time. You don’t want your battery to die during the flash process!

WARNING — YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!  PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING TO 06.15.

  1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple.  You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
  2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
  3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail).  You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).

Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to!  Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.

*** Some users are reporting WiFi, GPS and battery drainage issues after jailbreak and unlock.

Untethered Jailbreak: iPhone 3GS (old bootrom), iPhone 3G, iPod touch 2G (Non-MC)

Tethered Jailbreak: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPad, iPod touch 4G, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 2G (MC Model)
A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.

Lets jailbreak iOS 4.2.1/4.1 and update iPhone 3GS or 3G to baseband 06.15.00 using RedSn0w 0.9.6b5.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS/3G iOS 4.2.1 and Update to Baseband 06.15.00 with RedSn0w 0.9.6b5

Step 1

Step 2

Connect your iDevice to the iTunes 10.1 and restore iOS 4.2.1/4.1.

Step 3

Once your iPhone is running iOS 4.2.1/4.1, execute the downloaded RedSn0w 0.9.6b5. (Windows 7 and Vista users, please run redsn0w as Administrator in “XP Compatiblity Mode”)

Step 4

Hit the Browse button and select the downloaded iOS 4.2.1/4.1 firmware. RedSn0w will recognize the firmware, now hit the Next button.

Step 5

Select Install Cydia and Install iPad Baseband options. This will add Cydia to iOS 4.2.1 and replace iOS 4.2.1 baseband with iPad 3.2.2 baseband 06.15.00. Hit Yes if you want to update baseband to unlock iPhone.

Step 6

RedSn0w will ask you to turn off your device. When it’s off and plugged in, hit the next button.

Step 7

Now you’ll be instructed to put your device into DFU Mode. Follow the on screen instructions.

Once your device goes into DFU mode, RedSn0w will start jailbreaking it. Once done, you can find the Cydia icon on your iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad home screen.

That’s it. You’ve successfully jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3GS, 3G and now have baseband 06.15.00.

Okay. When you have your phone looping the startup, you should do the next.
1.remove your iTunes and re-install it.
        2.Plug your iDevice to computer
3.Then go to DFU mode with HOLDING THE HOME AND POWER BUTTON.
Release POWER BUTTON once you get the cable picture on your screen then wait for the pop-up in your iTunes and release HOME BUTTON
4.recover your idevice on iTUNES.Recover usually updates your phone but you don’t have any choice.

i fixed mine, what i did i set it to DFU mode restored it with 4.1 FW then once the 1015 error pops out i used tinyumbrella to finish it so now i’m on 4.1 with 6.15.00 BB, try this.. hope it works for yall

    • Tal 9 December 2010 at 2:17 pm #

      Thanks,
I could fix mine from this restore mode using your suggestion.
I had to downgrade it from 4.2 to 4.1 on Ipad BB. The problem was to downgrade it with Itunes. I had to add this line to the hosts file: (74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com) to be able to downgrade.
used tinyumbrella to exit the restore mode and then the redsn0w 9.6b6 (used the tinyumbrella from a MAC all the other actions I did from windows XP based machine)
Seems to be working fine now. It’s not my device, I checked it yesterday for about two hours the WIFI connection was stable the device wasn’t heating, the battery seemed to last fine according the percentage. did not check the GPS.
I would not buy myself a device that requires such an effort braking into just to let use a different carrier, but i’m glad I could help.
      Thank’s again.

I can’t find the ipsw file in the 3G ios 4.2.1 download. Can anyone help? I have looked all over the net and the downloads are all the same. A restore.zip. No ipsw.

    • zigen 8 December 2010 at 8:34 am #

just rename the .zip to .ipsw

    • Yongkers 17 December 2010 at 8:03 am #

Go to youtube and look for the video on how to convert Zip to ipsw. A few essential steps to be done, not simply convert by word of mouth. YOu have to go to control panel and folder options, “view” and unclick “hide extension for known file types”, then you can change the extension of zip directly to ipsw

Hello, everyone!I plan to update my iPhone 3G version 3.1.3 to 4.2.1.I would like to know how the iPhone 3G performs with the 4.2.1 version because I’ve heard rumours that the device become very slow after the upgrade. However,I watched a test video in YouTube and everything seems to be normal (without slowing, crashing e.t.c.)It would be good to write what are your views about the upgrade.
    Best wishes,rocky50!

I did exactly as mentioned. The problem is when redsnow starts working. After a certain time the iphone restarts and nothing happens actually.

It is exactly the same as before. Nothing changes at all, not even the slightest thing eventhough I see the iphone screen with “Downloading Jailbreak Data…” written for a certain time but afterwards nothing happens.

    • The_gros 15 January 2011 at 7:01 am #

Here is what you need to do:
      1) Collect the following before you start:
      a) Custom ipsw firmware
      b) Apple original restore firmware
      c) Redsn0w 0.9.6beta5
      d) Itunes
      2) Connect iphone to PC and Launch Redsn0w as Administrator
      3) Browse to your original apple firmware. Click next
      4) Make sure you get the “IPSW successfully identified”
      5) Select the option “Just enter pwned DFU mode right now”
      6) with your iphone 3gs in DFU mode, Launch Itunes
      7) When your device is detected, a window will pop up, Close it, to see the restore button
      8) Press “Shift + Restore”
      9) Browse to your custom ipsw firmware, and let itunes restore your iphone, when done the iphone will restart,
10)After restart, your iphone will remain locked, only emergency call will be allowed. it’s ok.
      11) Launch again Redsn0w, so everything as before but this time select “Install Cydia”
12)Follow the instructions to Jailbreak your iphone
      13) After Jailbreak, the iphone will be stuck on the Apple logo. It’s ok.
      14) Launch Redsn0w again, do the same thing as before, but this time select ” Just boot tethered right now”
      15) Follow Redsn0w ‘s instructions until the end.
      16) When it will restart jailbroken already. You will see Cydia Wow.
      17) To unlock it. Do the Ultrasn0w thing. You can search Youtube to see how to do it.
18)If everything was done correctly you should have an unlocked and jailbroken iphone 3gs.

im wanting to jailbreak my iphone 3g running version 4.2.1 with firmware 05.15.04. It says above about upgrading bandbase

“Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to! Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.”

does that mean unlock service provider? Cos I dont. So do I do it or not?

I too had the problem where an iPhone 3G (16Gb) was stuck in Recovery Mode for almost 2 months after upgrading to OS4.2. Unable to restore the phone to stock OS, I was stumped for a long while.

I finally solved the problem by downgrading to OS 3.1.2 using Tinyumbrella and then upgrading the phone to OS4.1.

    Tinyumbrella instructions here:
