Jailbreak iPhone 3GS/3G iOS 4.2.1 and Update to Baseband 06.15.00 with RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 - iPhoneHeat

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS/3G iOS 4.2.1 and Update to Baseband 06.15.00 with RedSn0w 0.9.6b5

Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 can jailbreak iOS 4.2.1/4.1 and update iPhone 3GS / 3G baseband to 06.15.00 which is unlockable with UltraSn0w 1.2. Those iPhone 3GS/3G users stuck with Baseband 05.15.04 & 05.14.04 need to update baseband to the iPad baseband 06.15.00.

Fortunately, RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 comes with the feature to jailbreak and also update iPhone 3GS/3G baseband to 16.15.00 to unlock with UltraSn0w 1.2. RedSn0w is available for both Windows and Mac OS X. PwnageTool 4.1.3 also does the same thing and prompts if you want to update baseband, however, it supports Mac OS X only.

IMPORTANT: If you do flash your baseband via redsn0w, please keep it plugged into USB the whole time. You don’t want your battery to die during the flash process!

WARNING — YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!  PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING TO 06.15.

  1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple.  You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
  2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
  3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail).  You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).

Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to!  Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.

*** Some users are reporting WiFi, GPS and battery drainage issues after jailbreak and unlock.

Untethered Jailbreak: iPhone 3GS (old bootrom), iPhone 3G, iPod touch 2G (Non-MC)

Tethered Jailbreak: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPad, iPod touch 4G, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 2G (MC Model)
A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.

Lets jailbreak iOS 4.2.1/4.1 and update iPhone 3GS or 3G to baseband 06.15.00 using RedSn0w 0.9.6b5.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS/3G iOS 4.2.1 and Update to Baseband 06.15.00 with RedSn0w 0.9.6b5

Step 1

Step 2

Connect your iDevice to the iTunes 10.1 and restore iOS 4.2.1/4.1.

Step 3

Once your iPhone is running iOS 4.2.1/4.1, execute the downloaded RedSn0w 0.9.6b5. (Windows 7 and Vista users, please run redsn0w as Administrator in “XP Compatiblity Mode”)

Step 4

Hit the Browse button and select the downloaded iOS 4.2.1/4.1 firmware. RedSn0w will recognize the firmware, now hit the Next button.

Step 5

Select Install Cydia and Install iPad Baseband options. This will add Cydia to iOS 4.2.1 and replace iOS 4.2.1 baseband with iPad 3.2.2 baseband 06.15.00. Hit Yes if you want to update baseband to unlock iPhone.

Step 6

RedSn0w will ask you to turn off your device. When it’s off and plugged in, hit the next button.

Step 7

Now you’ll be instructed to put your device into DFU Mode. Follow the on screen instructions.

Once your device goes into DFU mode, RedSn0w will start jailbreaking it. Once done, you can find the Cydia icon on your iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad home screen.

That’s it. You’ve successfully jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3GS, 3G and now have baseband 06.15.00.

hey guyz well it fucking sux as usually iPhone worked for lil f*cking while then oops stuck on god damn apple logo, I tried many f*cking time’s but it’s still on same old shit, well we ready to f*ck it with iOS4.2.1 fuckware,

my Advice, don’t f*ck it to ur iDevice cus it will really f*ck you

goodluck

Daniel November 30, 2010, 8:02 pm

Amen. I just wish there was more discussion on the problems before I lept on the 6.15 bandwaggon. I now have battery problems and a fragged GPS. Good times.
.
Personally, I blame Apple over the dev-team. The reason we can’t restore with 6.15 is because Apple tweaked the 4.2.1 update to check the baseband version. They really hate jailbreakers, and despite it being perfectly legal, seem to go out of their way to make it as awkward as possible.
.
Well, I hope this 6.15 update hurts the resale value of their iPhone product. Maybe that’ll teach them to stop f*cking about with it. I’m at the end of my tether with this company, I’m off to the Android camp. Adios!

bernek November 30, 2010, 2:24 am

I believe the BB 06.15.00 mess up the GPS … I hope its not true otherwise A LOT of iPhone 3G/S will be without GPS !

psam853 November 30, 2010, 4:49 am

I just noticed the same problem. No GPS,
please help

Dionysus November 30, 2010, 10:34 pm

It messed up my GPS on my 3Gs too. Cannot use my Navigon app now as GPS signal is too weak whereas it was perfect before I changed to BB 06.15.00. ;(

Daniel December 1, 2010, 5:58 pm

It is most likely the baseband, yes, rather than ultrasn0w. The GPS unit seems to be tied to the SIM card via the baseband somehow, since if you remove the SIM on a normal iPhone, the GPS chip stops working in much the same way as the new 6.15 baseband causes.
.
If true, this is really bad! There is no fix for a 6.15 update. Once done, it is permanent. If it has affected your GPS chip, then that’s it. Gone. Dead. No more GPS for you.
.
My iPhone has suffered the same fate, I’m afraid. Perhaps Apple will see the damage the dev-team has caused and deliberately release a higher baseband update than 6.15? Are they that benevolent and kind? I think not. They loathe jailbreakers, and love to see them squirm. I wouldn’t be surprised if they malevolently kept the baseband below 6.15 just to fuck jailbreakers over. It fits their MO so far …

maximAk November 30, 2010, 2:41 am

Maybe I am lucky that I cannot update the BB to 6.15 because a lot of people having issues with it, but on Iphone 3G which is running 4.1 it won’t work. I am not putting 4.2.1 on my iphone so for now Redsnow hangs halfway through the process. This is crazy, it took these guys so long to come up with the unlock and now it won’t work as promised.

bernek November 30, 2010, 3:00 am

I’m really curious why it f*ck*d up my GPS ?! I did restore like 10 times iOS 4.1 and 4.2.1 (with limera1n with greenpois0n and with redsn0w …) something is really bad here or my iPhone GPS just DIED suddenly ?!?!?! was working perfectly how can it DIE just like that ? I think the BB from iPad is the problem not sure tho because nobody even on twitter or IRC doesnt want to give me some answers.

gsm80 November 30, 2010, 4:13 pm

Same here… gps not working with this bb. bad luck for us!!! not reported from dev-team!!

Dionysus November 30, 2010, 10:38 pm

It f”£ked up my GPS too! GPS processor is different for iPad than iPhone 3Gs. Cannot use my Navigon App anymore. GPS reception is too poor even though it used to work fine before ‘upgrade’ to iPad BB 06.15.00. Dev Team should warn people about this risk in their blog!

Daniel December 1, 2010, 6:01 pm

Dev-team = fail.

Jax November 30, 2010, 3:00 am

Complain all you want when you Pay for something, this is free and no one is forcing you to use it, or get use to it or dont do it, that simple.

bernek November 30, 2010, 3:02 am

Yeah its free but when you wait 2 months for it and then it fucks up your GPS you need to ask a few questions dont you ? otherwise (if this is true) a lot of people will get their damn GPSes not working anymore because of an iPad BB !!!

So thats why I ask to see where the problem is.

HyperS November 30, 2010, 3:13 pm

Hmmm i have iphone 3Gs with old boot rom and i flashed it with 4.1 and 06.15.00 BB. It was easy and without any problrms. GPS working fine but i think that battery losing power more fast than it was on 4.0.1 and old BB. But i have a working phone!

maximAk November 30, 2010, 3:04 am

I wouldn’t mind paying for it, if the damn thing would work. I’ve tried to buy the unlock from one of the ad offers found on this website, but it turned out to be a total waste of money so I am not paying for the unlock unless I can try it first and it is working

maximAk November 30, 2010, 3:08 am

And yes I totally agree with bernek, after waiting for the unlock for so long, we do have the right to be kinda pissed off if the phone gets messed up by this. There was nothing in the disclaimer about having issues with the GPS

Daniel December 1, 2010, 6:03 pm

I agree. The dev-team screwed us bigtime. If I knew all the possible fuck-ups this baseband update could cause, I would never have attempted it in the first place.

jorgegee November 30, 2010, 10:11 am

ur a bunch of morons u should have some experience jailbraking before try it, if u dont have any experience ur are gonna end up like this guys…..lol

rizu001 November 30, 2010, 2:47 am

Thanks

Roald November 30, 2010, 3:10 am

I asked this several times but only once someone helped me suggesting to use Cyder2. here’s my issue: I did the update and the baseband flash on my iPhone 3G no issues on the process, but I have no WI-FI on this phone so how can I use Ultrasn0w??? I tried Cyder 2 but it won’t work. So I’m stuck with a Jailbroken Phone but no luck on the Unlock. Any help??

latium November 30, 2010, 3:56 am

Cyder and Cyder 2 will work only on FW 3.xx series.

Roald November 30, 2010, 4:10 am

So I’m pretty much screwed ?

Smitty November 30, 2010, 12:09 pm

Why no wifi?
Borrow a friends sim and then download ultrasn0w

Roald November 30, 2010, 6:32 pm

I’ll give that a try thanks, the Wi-Fi went down south when the previous owner updated it to 4.1.0

latium November 30, 2010, 3:26 am

This unlock method is not the best one, the reason why I don’t like the fact that we have to update the BB to 6.15.00 which is belong to an iPad BB and take all the consequences with it, if you read the risk from the Dev Team you will understand it better, this is a trip of no return, anything goes wrong with this BB update you cannot restore your iphone with a stock firmware but only with a custom one if you are lucky enough , so I want to share my opinion with you don’t do this unless you really need to, for now I will stay away from this method and hopping in the future with a better option.
Some people are already experiencing loosing the Wi-Fi or the GPS or both after they update the BB to 6.15.00, like I said is not a good method to unlock the iphone stay away from this. That is my opinion.

By Dev-Team – YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).

bernek November 30, 2010, 6:01 am

By Dev-Team – YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING

A little ADDON that THEY SHOULD MAKE: YOU COULD END UP WITH NO WIFI OR NO GPS !!!

Daniel November 30, 2010, 7:31 pm

I agree totally. Dev-team fucked up here. This is an extremely risky unlock that has a lot of unforseen consequences associated with it. They should have at least tested this better before it was released.

So many people (myself included) are reporting nuked GPS chips as a result of updating (permanently) to BB 6.15.

latium December 1, 2010, 11:01 am

After the new unlock tool came out I had many thoughts about it, the Dev Team made a big mess.
At this point after almost 3 days after the release date is time to analyze this.
All over the web I hear nothing than complain about this tool but one thing is very bother me that no one of my friends has been to success in this method.
My opinion,
Point one – I think this mess was planed from the Dev Team they knew that this tool wasn’t a good one, they could release un update of Fuzzy band to downgrade the current BB 5.14.02 and 5.15.04 and unlock with the same exploit AT+XAPP command founded in BB 05.13.04 so doing that we could restore the iphone with a stock FW in case of screwing up because the BB is downgraded and not updated to an high sequence.
Second point, the Dev Team are saying: the very first iPad firmware 3.2.2 has baseband version 06.15.00 still vulnerable to AT+XAPP. The iPad baseband is built for the exact same baseband chip as the iPhone3G/3GS — they’re fully compatible.
So what they did they release RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 which comes with the feature to jailbreak and also update iPhone 3GS/3G baseband to 16.15.00 means that the BB is been extract from the iPad FW and built into RedSn0w 0.9.6b5, this is the point that I want to Highlight, as you know the iPad BB is factory unlocked and if you remember when Steve Jobs presented the iPad said specifically that it IS UNLOCKED.
If the Dev Team are be able to extract an unlocked BB from an iPad and built into RedSn0w like they did, I think was easy to built RedSn0w 0.9.6b5 with an iPhone BB 5.15.04 Factory unlocked but they didn’t.
So after I was think all this for 3 days I came out that the Dev Team is not what we are thinking, they planed all this, we give them the trust and they screwed us.
Questions: Who is the Dev Team and why they killed only iPhone 3G and 3GS before the hollyday?

Daniel December 1, 2010, 4:25 pm

Wowww…One of the best posts ever.I totally agree with you.And the question part is the best 😉

Daniel December 1, 2010, 4:47 pm

I get that your name might well be Daniel, but it looks an awful lot like you’re trying to impersonate another user on this discussion board … perhaps a different alias choice would have been wise.

Daniel December 1, 2010, 5:01 pm

I’m in broad agreement with this post. I don’t know the motivations behind the dev-team’s efforts to unlock/jailbreak iPhones, but I understand there is a degree of competition between groups (such as GeoHot vs GreenP0ison using the same exploit).
.
It is entirely possible that this is an effort to monopolise the race by making it so baseband 6.15 users can ONLY use the dev-team’s cracks from now on, since they are unable to update/restore without custom firmware.
.
I for one find their decision to release such an unstable and unpredictable unlock highly suspect, especially since it can’t be undone by any current means.
.
Who are the “dev-team”? Why do you trust them so openly to run unsigned code on your expensive iPhone? Is it their fault that your phone is now fucked up, or yours?

Sam November 30, 2010, 3:58 am

PLEASE GEO HOT !!! come backkkkkkkkkkkk

iSteve Hacker Jobs December 1, 2010, 8:48 am

I am iSteve Hacker Jobs and I approve this message. GEOHOTz please release Limesn0w.

Nathan November 30, 2010, 4:52 am

PLEASE HELP!!!!

i can’t jailbreak it! and it doesn’t let me to restore again…..
i can’t do anything now

on the iphone 3gs screen only appeal the symbol connect to itune. i can’t even turn it off

ked November 30, 2010, 5:54 am

i did it and it works, i was stucked with bb 5.15.04, i took the risk and works

omega November 30, 2010, 6:39 am

Yeah my WIFI fucked up, cant connect to a network to install UltrasnOw, so im fucked! : (

bernek November 30, 2010, 6:49 am

Even if you unlock are you happy with NO WIFI ? … for me its NO GPS so a contest for what is worse ? (I would say BOTH lol)

omega November 30, 2010, 11:50 am

Fixed the problem, diskAid rules : )

Daniel November 30, 2010, 7:34 pm

I also have no GPS. It’s tricky to decide which is worse. Currently, I’d say this. I rely on my iPhone’s GPS abilities a lot, but don’t use the wifi so much. Having said that, those without wifi can’t install ultrasn0w 1.2 to unlock their 3G data subscription. Bummer.

Whish November 30, 2010, 8:34 am

So far it works for me
No problem at all
But honest im not encouraging any1 using this method so if its not that neccessary u should stay away from this

lucky November 30, 2010, 8:41 am

dude ‘m having 3gs,running on 4.1os bb 05.14.02…just tel me how to go about..

Daniel November 30, 2010, 7:41 pm

I had the same hardware/software combination. 3GS, iOS4.1, baseband 05.14.02. However, after I used ultrasn0w to update to bb6.15 then unlock, it nuked my GPS chip.

I would advise you stick it out and wait for a better unlock solution. Different production line models of 3GS seem to react quite unpredictably to the baseband update.

If you’re lucky, it might just frag your GPS. If not, you may find wifi doesn’t work, or your iPhone could just not boot at all.

Even those few reporting no ill effects can NEVER update/restore their iPhone again until Apple release a baseband higher than 6.15, which for the 3GS may very well be years, or likely never. It’s not worth it.

Sergio November 30, 2010, 8:43 am

Hi! I´ve tried to update my bb from 5.14.04 to 6.15 with redsnow in my 3GS but It stays the same. It gives me no errors when applying the exploit, but then I have no cydia neither the bb 6.15…. any ideas?

Sergio November 30, 2010, 8:44 am

*5.15.04

jorgegee November 30, 2010, 10:08 am

everything works just fine, i rstored 4.1 and then use then redsn0w

usman9414 November 30, 2010, 10:14 am

Bingoo, 100% work….

john November 30, 2010, 12:09 pm

well….i just did 10 3gs running 4.1 and updated 6.15BB today, no problems at ALL to all my devices, i installed ultrasnow 1.2 after the BB update and tested with tmobile sim card to all the phones, maybe its just something you guys did wrong to causing the wifi or GPS malfunction.

but if any of you guys wanna sell me your phone please drop me a line 😉

bernek December 1, 2010, 2:59 am

dont go extatic about the selling … how many old bootrom did you have ? 1 or 0 ?

Smitty November 30, 2010, 12:25 pm

I did something dumb. I have updated 3GS 4.2.1 6.15bb, everything working fine, then wanted to give phone to a friend and did master reset, bad move, phone stuck on apple logo forever. Try to restore to 4.2.1 but can’t cause have new baseband.
I hope a custom FW with 6.15 will let me install the OS cause now it’s stuck in restore mode.
I have no Mac to make custom FW
Any one know if the custom FW are forthcoming? Been searching since Sunday, can’t find a single custom out there.

kkaussie November 30, 2010, 12:34 pm

I have a similar problem, cydia didn’t work when i did Complete upgrade in Cydia. so i tried to restore and now stuck on connect to Itunes…cannot restore.
anyone Plz help

Zorroedad November 30, 2010, 4:31 pm

What u can do it’s meke the process again with RedSn0w, just do that and tell us later how this works for u!!!

AfRoO November 30, 2010, 12:44 pm

guys I have iSHIT 3Gs, was working perfectly someday with ios4.0 and ultrasn0w but someday it went off by it self so I upgraded it to iOS4.1 and it worked perfectly too but Locked, and oops God damn me Last night, and UPGRADED it to iOS4.2.1 with iPAD BBshit It worked with me cool for 5 or 10 mins then stuck ON Apple LOGO when I tried to Restore from BACKUP,
well I tried to restore it with Official FW but it wont go with me,
The only one soultion is Custom FW, but as shit I am WINDOWS user, well hopefully iPHONE-HEAT, UPLOAD TO US iOS4.2.1 CUSTOMIZED via PwnageTool_4.1.3 Unlock Edition.

only effects I got my GPRS EDGE IS F*ckedup.

ADVICE DON’T F*CK UR DEVICES GUYS AND Stay god damn way,

lucky November 30, 2010, 1:05 pm

dude instead of upgrading to 4.2.1 u could’ve upgraded to 4.1 and then used redsnow…cuz i heard it works…’m on 4.1os,3gs and ‘m wondering what to do 😮

Daniel November 30, 2010, 7:46 pm

Agreed. STAY AWAY from the dev-team’s retarded baseband 6.15 update idea. It’s bad news, guys. Unpredictable and risky.

I say again, STAY AWAY FROM BASEBAND 6.15 !

iPhoneHeat December 1, 2010, 2:19 am

any older FW SHSH blob saved?

Daniel December 1, 2010, 2:56 am

This is a good idea. If you have SHSH blobs saved for 4.0 or 4.1, you can downgrade to a version of iOS that doesn’t cross-check the baseband version like 4.2.1 does.
.
I had issues installing 4.2.1 also, but managed to unlock my 3GS by subsequently downgrading to 4.1 and applying the ultrasn0w unlock to my sucessfully updated 6.15 baseband.
.
Whilst it does appear to have fragged my GPS chip, the device is indeed unlocked, a fact for which I am grateful. Still, if you haven’t already attempted to do so, I can’t recommend that updating the baseband to 6.15 is safe or wise.

iPhoneHeat December 1, 2010, 3:40 am

“I can’t recommend that updating the baseband to 6.15 is safe or wise”
I second that 🙂 it’s the worst solution IMO.

AfRoO December 1, 2010, 5:26 am

guyz u weird kinda, if u do not recommended that why don’t u wrote that in red as usually under ur post???

Daniel December 1, 2010, 6:10 pm

Yes I’m also confused. If you agree with me, IPhoneHeat, that this unlock is entirely unsafe to perform, why don’t you include that in your post?
.
People need to know how shit this unlock is! It can cause massive damage to iPhones the world over, why aren’t you updating your post to include these warnings, like AfRoO suggests?

AfRoO December 1, 2010, 8:21 pm

yea, really,
I guess iPHONEHEAT was just wanna be the first site who’s post preview about the new tool, without testing or thinking twice,
anyways if there’s blames, will be for the creator
MRs or MR muscleNerd, U FUCKED a lot of people hopes so what next,????
for me my 3Gs is gone and i cant fix it without costumized 4.2.1 and i dont have mac also i dont know anyone have mac so, kinda like Good bye my 3Gshit

iPhoneHeat December 1, 2010, 10:36 pm

here’s CFW 4.2.1 for 3GS http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6JVZF92E

iPhoneHeat December 1, 2010, 9:41 pm

I think Warning part explains all the risks involved.
EDIT: Just added another warning abt WiFi, GPS and Battery Drainage issues reported by many of you.

AfRoO November 30, 2010, 1:39 pm

hey lucky,

you don’t need to fuck it up, stay away and wait for anyone else, well for me, it’s totally f*cked up I can no use it even for iPOD or CAM or WHATEVER it’s totally f*ckedup,

I think the only way to fix it is iPHONE-HEAT upload custom ios 4.2.1 FM build via PwnageTool_4.1.3 Unlock Edition or someone of this site fans help us and do it to me, and people like me, cus people who’s upgraded to iPAD baseband THEY CAN’T Restore with Official FW anyway any more…

good luck

Lucky November 30, 2010, 1:47 pm

thanks for d info 😛

AfRoO November 30, 2010, 3:02 pm

u welcome & good Luck

Zorroedad November 30, 2010, 4:38 pm

Ey bro, what u can do its make the process again with redsn0w for windows! U have to have the original 4.2.1 fw from apple and u mark the install cidya and upgrade to iPad bb options! This works for me, so u can do that!!! After u do that tell us how this works for u!!

AfRoO November 30, 2010, 7:41 pm

Man as i told u my 3Gs stuck on recovery mode and as u know if u understood what the DEV-blah blah said if U upgraded to iPAD shit U wont be apply to restore with factory FW, so the only way for me and users like me is iOS4.2.1 custom Edition Build via Pwndtool,
but for Windows user have to keeep waiting for any iphoneheat to upload the custom FW,

Zorroedad November 30, 2010, 8:18 pm

U can use tinyumblella the last version to get out of recovery mode!!! Amd after that use the metod that I told u at first!!!

lucky November 30, 2010, 8:30 pm

gimme ur email id pls?

AfRoO November 30, 2010, 10:11 pm

dude, let me explain to u something,
I did everything nin ur mind,
I tried it and tried to downgrade it with custom FW, but it still wont,,
well my 3Gs now, is half restored, I need custom 4.2.1 firmware builded via this new pwntool shit to restore it fully restore, u got what i need now,
then when i done this i only need to go to cydia and download the ultrasn0w to use my ishit perfectly

Daniel December 2, 2010, 12:15 am

Listen, Zorroedad, even the newest verion of Tiny Umbrella cannot get the iPhone out of recovery mode. FW 4.2.1 CANNOT be kicked out of recovery, Apple fixed the code. See the link below. FW 4.2.1 has a baseband version check – if the baseband wasn’t updated with the firmware, it will hang in recovery. Forever.
.
http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/
.
I say again, FW 4.2.1 CANNOT BE KICKED OUT OF RECOVERY. Learn to read around a subject before posting your opinion.

smalldick82 November 30, 2010, 2:10 pm

Zorroedad November 30, 2010, 4:26 pm

For me, works like a charm!!!! Thanks dev-team

Then it would seem you are one of the lucky minority. It’s not that it can’t work that so many people have an issue with, but that it yields such unpredictable results on a variety of devices.
.
It MAY work correctly, or perhaps disable your wifi, frag your GPS, drain the battery quickly or prevent your iPhone from even booting up.
.
From a group that claims to have “thoroughly tested over two weeks” this unlock yet have it behave so randomly, no one person can take your testimonial as a reliable prediction of how they can expect the 6.15 update to affect their device.
.
So, in a sense, your comment just adds to the list of unpredictable things that may happen with this unlock; and in another sense, it’s a totally useless statement that doesn’t correlate with any of the overwhelmingly negative feedback this update is receiving.

cslp2002 November 30, 2010, 5:19 pm

ok. I have an iphone 3g that i upgraded to the new ipad baseband on 4.2/ Everything was working fine till i installed swirlly mms then stuck on apple logo. So i tried to just walk through the redsn0w again and it freezes. Where can i get a custom ipsw for 4.2 with i pad baseband to restore to. Please help as i am without a phone for the time being.

alanzaki073 November 30, 2010, 6:25 pm

reading all the “out of anger” comments urged me to respond here..
Its working great for me..3gs ios 4.1 unlocked with ultrasnow 1.2
I was amongst many who hastly updated to ios 4.1 and got stuck for months without unlock…
dev team guys ROCK..great work…
I could say i’m lucky(or others just unlucky or impulsive in approach)I got wifi , gps all going good and not experienced a thing that can make say “shit !! “

lucky November 30, 2010, 6:40 pm

dude gimme ur email id…i wanna chat with you about the unlock

bernek November 30, 2010, 7:38 pm

You forgot about the battery problems in the “new jailbreak” if you hactivated with redsnow.

Daniel November 30, 2010, 7:55 pm

Oh bloody hell. Good spot, I just noticed the same problem. Battery ticks down about 8% an hour in standby with ultrasn0w 1.2.

Seriously, guys, ultrasn0w f*cks up your iPhone, now more than ever. Stay far far away, don’t even consider it. WAIT for a more competent approach. These rookies messed up bigtime with this release.

iceman0013 November 30, 2010, 8:27 pm

So I am not the only one seeing the battery drop like a rock?? I have a 3gs with BB 6.15.00. Everything as far as the unlocking goes went great, I have Wi-Fi and GPS, just the battery life is sucking right now…….

iPhoneHeat December 1, 2010, 2:07 am

a temp. solution will be posted shortly..

iceman0013 December 1, 2010, 8:11 pm

IPHONEHEAT, it is great that a temp. solution is coming, but is there a more permanant solution coming as well that you are aware of? what is causing this massive battery use??

Kyoko November 30, 2010, 8:50 pm

Is your 3GS with new bootrom?
I have a 3GS(iOS 4.1/new bootrom) on 5.14.02 baseband.
If I follow above instructions and choose iOS4.1 IPSW at step 4. Can my 3GS get an Untethered Jailbreak?
by the way, are you a mac user? or windows user?
Thanks a lot.

smalldick82 November 30, 2010, 10:36 pm

maybe it works on FW 4.1 only.Someone updated to FW 4.2.1 will stuck with DFU mode or Apple logo all the time.hope dev team will find out this problem and fix it for unlucky people…thanks

Daniel December 1, 2010, 5:19 pm

Certainly when I first attempted this unlock, I was using FW 4.2.1 and it resulted in the iPhone crashing on boot. When I tried a second time from a fresh restore with FW 4.2.1, the device got stuck in DFU with a “connect to iTunes” prompt on the screen.
.
The only solution I could come up with was to downgrade to 4.1 with my SHSH blobs and then apply the jailbreak using redsn0w, which resulted in a “sucessful” unlock, battery issues and GPS-nuking aside.

smalldick82 December 2, 2010, 10:08 am

I did bring my ishit 3gs 16gb new bootrom to Apple store and told them this problem when i was updating from 4.1 to 4.2.1.They checked and restored twice with Factory FW 4.2.1 but couldnt succesfull. Then they Exchange a new one for me and i added $65 fee.Try it and good luck people

-caine December 1, 2010, 1:42 am

lucky November 30, 2010, 8:12 pm

slik4u2 November 30, 2010, 11:55 pm

najaf December 1, 2010, 2:14 am

my 3G is working perfectly with 4.1 bb 6.15.0 any one have issue i wish i can solve it….

najaf December 1, 2010, 2:15 am

yahoooooooo my 3G is working perfectly with 4.1 bb 6.15.0 any one have issue i wish i can solve it….

Daniel December 1, 2010, 5:23 pm

How about a non-functional GPS chip on an iPhone 3GS, caused by the baseband update to 6.15? It’s not that I doubt your superhuman problem solving abilities, but I suspect this may be somewhat beyond your expertise.

Sam December 1, 2010, 3:02 am

Oh ppl and Iphoneheat HELP ! i have iphone 3Gs new bootroom on iOS4.1, BB 05.14.02 , i have SHSH saved for 4.1 only

If i just use redsnow for BB update on 4.1 will it be f9 as i find ppl saying that it has NO wifi workin , sometimes no GPS and battery drainage, so whats the best this to do ? wait or just do it ? and this is the beta version of redsnow , should i wait for the official version ? or geohots Limesn0w ? Please give the best possible answer ASAP thnx guys

iPhoneHeat December 1, 2010, 3:39 am

if you want the unlock and you’re brave enough and consider the risks mentioned in the post, go ahead.. try it on 4.1.
If you do NOT depend on unlock, I strongly recommend you to stay away from BB 06.15.00 update

Sam December 1, 2010, 4:01 am

will there be any better solutions then this ? because i completely depend on unlock ?

Daniel December 1, 2010, 5:29 pm

The trouble, IPhoneHeat, is that people WERE brave enough to take on the issues mentioned in the post. The problem, in case it has completely escaped your notice, is the MASSIVE problems this unlock has caused that WEREN’T mentioned in the post.
.
THIS is why people are pissed off. It’s because there are unforeseen consequences to the unlock that weren’t “as advertised” by the dev-team.
.
If the magic disclaimer you’re quoting read something like “may fuck up GPS, wifi, battery and/or brick your iPhone”, then perhaps your discussion boards would be empty since every sane person would have left this piece-of-crap unlock where it belongs – in the trash.

najaf December 1, 2010, 3:11 am

persong facing battery problem should use these methods

1-try to activate the phone using the official sim if u have it (even if the sim itself is old and not working)
2-if A is not feasible, u can install SBsettings from featured cydia packages and turn wifi and data off when u r not using it

Daniel December 1, 2010, 5:35 pm

You will likely find, Najaf, that the majority of people seeking this unlock are unable to have access to the original SIM. They quite possibly have AT&T-locked iPhones outside of the US.
.
As for your second point, it is the MODEM chip that is causing the battery problems, not the wifi. The very fact that the radio transmitter is active will cause the battery to flatten with this unlock, and I’d imagine people aren’t willing to shut it off since the whole point of unlocking was to be able to use it as a phone again.

najaf December 4, 2010, 12:38 am

new software comes to resolve battry prblm now ok

tnert2003 December 1, 2010, 6:47 am

My wifi on iphone 3g was not working on 6.15 bb. I got it to work fooling around.

tnert2003 December 1, 2010, 7:02 am

Already jailbroken to 6.15 bb but couldn’t unlock no wifi. Here are all the steps. I don’t know which one did it. But all I know is that it’s working now. I turned airplane mode on. Removed sim card. I downloaded the custom iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_custom Restore. Cut the original ipsw from mt itunes update folder. Replaced with custom one. Restored in itunes. Ran redsn0w agaign. WIFI. Entered sim card. Turned off itunes.

Silberg December 1, 2010, 8:14 am

My issue is, that I Didn’t upgrade my iP3gs 4.1 mc to 4.2.1 before I used redsn0w and flashed the base band to ipads’ … Now I am stuck where redsn0w has done its job and the final pineapple logo is showing, and right after, instead of starting, I get the iTunesCable logo. Every time. I’ve tried everything it seems, But nothing helps. Please … Can anyone help me? Btw I use Windows xp 32 bit …

Silberg December 2, 2010, 4:51 pm

Plz… Can ANYONE help me?

Smitty December 2, 2010, 11:44 pm

See my reply to Josh below, think it will help you.

james December 1, 2010, 12:11 pm

i tried to jb and unlock now, my phone is stuck in rec mode/loading mode, and it wont start. does anyone know what i can do. i have 4.2.1 firrmware and i think 6.15 baseband, not sure, it never made it through. i try recboot that didnt work, i tried to retore to custom 4.2.1 and it didnt work what can i do?

Ozk December 1, 2010, 1:38 pm

I think the main question is, will there be an other unlock solution? Becouse it is definitely worth to wait. I don’t want to enter a dead end road.

Kyoko December 1, 2010, 2:43 pm

Does everyone have battery problem after updating to Baseband 06.15.00 and jailbreaking with RedSn0w 0.9.6b5?

Daniel December 1, 2010, 5:37 pm

As far as I can tell, not everyone. It seems to be a relatively uncommon side-effect of the unlock. Far more concerning is the disabling of wifi/GPS that may occur, and seems to be far more prevalent.

Sam December 1, 2010, 3:01 pm

Ok guys 3gs on BB 6.15 working perfectly ! on 4.1 but i have a battery probelem :S it is using it alot ! HELLLLLP Iphoneheat !!!!! HELP DEV TEAM

Daniel December 1, 2010, 5:48 pm

You may be out of luck on the ‘help me’ front. The dev-team are still “pleased to announce” their travesty of an unlock and have remained silent these past few days of user complaints. The outlook for a fix (any time soon, anyway) is bleak.
.
As far as undoing the damage caused to your device by the 6.15.00 update goes, I wouldn’t hold your breath. Apple may never release a baseband higher than 6.15 for 3G/3GS, and since the code was pilfered by the dev-team from an iPad, it seems as though re-writing a new custom baseband isn’t a party trick they can do.
.
I’m personally opting for an eBay sale of my BB 6.15 3GS. The stock device doesn’t offer the features I need, and jailbreaking is not worth the constant effort. There are multiple new smartphones on the market that offer real competition to the iPhone, I’d suggest your ‘fix’ is checking them out. That’s what I’m doing …

pethros December 1, 2010, 4:20 pm

dev-team peace of ass-whole same as iphone ios developer

Irvin December 1, 2010, 8:47 pm

Ok this is perhaps an alternative way of unlocking a 4.1 3gs, so far I have encounter no issues with battery drain. I’ve discover this accidentally so use at your own risk.

1. Update to 4.1 if you didn’t already.
2. Jailbreak with limera1n
3. Install Ultrasnow in cydia (shouldn’t unlock yet, proceed to step 4)

Note- at this point you can install or play with your phone however you want, put some music or sync some apps, it doesn’t matter, proceeding to step 4 will not delete the changes made after step 3.

4. Update to baseband 6.15 using redsnow, do it with 4.1 firmware.

It should be unlocked as soon as baseband is updated, so far, no battery issues. But take note that I do not utilize 3g or cellular data.

It also retain the limera1n untethered jailbreak.

Since the developer said battery issues pertains to hactivation methods, hactivating with limera1n probably makes a differences.

If anyone tries this please reply to how it works with 3g and cellular data enabled since I can’t test it myself (my carrier does not support it in my country without additional fees that I refused to pay).

Peace.

Irvin December 1, 2010, 9:02 pm

Update:- just tested wifi, no issues at all.

Additional notes:- when I said no battery issues, I meant no issues that made battery life worst that before the unlocking. However batter life was always poor to begin with. so there.

If you do feel the battery life fails to deliver then do like I do, use SBsetting or turn off multitasking with cydia apps.

dennis December 1, 2010, 9:59 pm

Accidentally restore with itune after jailbreak and unlocked with redsn0w 0.9.6b5. Try to restore but get error 1015. Help me please!!!

Maggs December 1, 2010, 11:45 pm

Well it’s back to android or windows for me and an almost new 3gs goes into the garbage bin. I’m sick of this apple shit. Jail breaking and unlocking a device I own is just bullshit. Congrats to mr jobs. You win, I lose. I’ll never buy one of your products again. I don’t blame the dev team, it’s apple who caused this shit and all we can do in protest is stop using their products. It wasn’t that great a phone anyway.

When I bought my 3GS I thought it was factory unlocked but I guess I got duped there too. It wasn’t until I upgraded to 4.2.1 that I found out.

JOSH December 2, 2010, 1:18 am

ok can someone help me i upgraded to firmware 4.2.1 and i used rednow 9.6beta5 to jailbreak with ipad 6.15 baseband well i did that and my safari wouldnt work and cydia never launched it was just a white app so… i restored thru itunes and it gave me a error saying cant restore and now im stuck in dfu mode can someone help please….

Smitty December 2, 2010, 8:44 pm

I had same problem
you need to download custom 4.2.1 firmware that preserves baseband(keeps it at 6.15) or it won’t work
I followed the directions on how to downgrade(or you can reinstall 4.2.1) over at GadgetDNA, scroll to the bottom of page and click more, look for this title
HOW TO: Downgrade iOS 4.2.1 to iOS 4.1, 4.0.2, 4.0.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPod touch and iPad
You need to modify hosts file to use shsh, not hard to do.

vodanhz December 2, 2010, 6:16 am

any particular reason/advantages for people to upgrade to iOS 4.2.1 so soon? when 3GS is still Tethered?
i’m so tempted to upgrade my 3GS(new Bootrom) but it’s still tethered. and see people are having problem after jb.

Maggs December 2, 2010, 7:40 am

I upgraded my 3GS to 4.2.1 jail broke and unlocked it without issues. It was untethered. I rebooted several times to make sure. My only problem was high battery drain so I did a reset and it was the same so I did full reset including data and that bricked it. It’s now in a box in the basement and a shiny new Galaxy S now sits in it’s place. Problem solved, albeit an expensive lesson.

Smitty December 2, 2010, 8:26 pm

Only old bootrom is untethered, new is tethered and not worth the hassle.
Only thing new in 4.2 is airprint and airplay
I upgraded my 3GS old bootrom with iPad 6.15 baseband and haven’t noticed any problems yet but you can never return your phone back to stock or install any new updates from apple. You can only use custom firmware which are not always easy to find, and need to modify itunes to use shsh server not apple to be able to install firmy.
If you update, save your shsh in cydia first to be able to downgrade if needed, and only use custom firmware that does not upgrade your baseband.

blackwido74 December 2, 2010, 9:28 pm

I updated my 3G to 4.2.1 with BB 6.15 on monday. Dunno why i did a restore and im stuck with recovery till yesterday. But guess what…. I managed to downgrade firmware to 4.1 but BB still remains at 6.15. Its possible after so many trial and errors. But i cannot recall what i did.

I jailbroke my iPhone 3GS 16gb using redsn0w 0.9.6b5 and then unlocked my phone. I didn’t realize I couldn’t just simply RESTORE my iPhone using iTunes. iTunes gave me error 1015.

Now, my phone wont boot (stays at a GUI where it shows a USB plugs into the iTunes logo).

I tried to re-jailbreak my phone again, but nothing happens…eventually I’m brought back to the screen where it shows a USB plugging into the iTune logo again.

HELP, email me if possible.

Anurag December 4, 2010, 7:38 am

Okay ,

I used RedSnow to do the Magic Trick & it worked like a charm.
I have an iphone 3gs with 4.1 (BB 15.4.02) which was jailbroken before by Limera. I tried to use the Pwnage tool to create the custom firmware but for some reason it did not work. Using RedSnow on the other hand was much easier & it all worked out very nicely.

I don’t have Any issues with the Wifi & my GPS is working as well. I am not sure about the battery drain issue But I will wait before installing the new modules. If I have no Battery Drain I probably will not bother with it. If I have a drain I will go with the new modules.

Apart from that I think someone pointed out correctly that we are being made to jump 6.15 also PARTLY to isolate us & be under the REGIN of one Hacker Group. I am fine with that. I am fine with even paying a SMALL fee for the services as long as it works & the Dev team is answerable.

So in the END my Iphone 3gs is Back to being a PHONE after >1 month of being a ipod touch. I want to Thank the Entire Dev team for making this possible. All is working out well for me I have nothing to complain. Thank You SO MUCH !!!! 🙂

Anurag December 4, 2010, 7:44 am

I just wanted to Quickly point to every one (Potential Unlocker Esp). It’s COMMON SENSE to stay at 4.1 for now & not to upgrade to 4.2. As most Devices at Tethered at 4.2.

Also 4.2 is a newer firmware & dosen’t offer much functionality. So it’s best to stay at 4.1 & use Redsnow + Ipad BB + UltraSn0w 1.2

DEV Team I LOVE YOU GUYZ !!!! My iphone is working again & best of all I have NO PROBLEMS at all.

I really appreciate you all guyz Working SO VERY HARD so we can enjoy FREEDOM on our Iphones…. Thx Sherif Hashim + the Guy from LA (I forgot his name)

Regards

http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f456/how-downgrade-iphone-ios-4-2-1-100-a-1156423/

Gaurav December 12, 2010, 3:19 am

if by mistake u didnt follow the proper guide mentioned by Dev Team to update baseband using Redsnow and finally u find ur iDevice in recovery mode then u dont need to worry about restoring it.just unplug the iDevice and leave it for few minutes.it’ll b automatically turned off and then restart it and u’ll find it as it is.
Found this case with in 2 iDevices running iOS 4.1

Okay. When you have your phone looping the startup, you should do the next.
1.remove your iTunes and re-install it.
2.Plug your iDevice to computer
3.Then go to DFU mode with HOLDING THE HOME AND POWER BUTTON.
Release POWER BUTTON once you get the cable picture on your screen then wait for the pop-up in your iTunes and release HOME BUTTON
4.recover your idevice on iTUNES.Recover usually updates your phone but you don’t have any choice.

i fixed mine, what i did i set it to DFU mode restored it with 4.1 FW then once the 1015 error pops out i used tinyumbrella to finish it so now i’m on 4.1 with 6.15.00 BB, try this.. hope it works for yall

Tal December 9, 2010, 2:17 pm

Thanks,
I could fix mine from this restore mode using your suggestion.
I had to downgrade it from 4.2 to 4.1 on Ipad BB. The problem was to downgrade it with Itunes. I had to add this line to the hosts file: (74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com) to be able to downgrade.
used tinyumbrella to exit the restore mode and then the redsn0w 9.6b6 (used the tinyumbrella from a MAC all the other actions I did from windows XP based machine)
Seems to be working fine now. It’s not my device, I checked it yesterday for about two hours the WIFI connection was stable the device wasn’t heating, the battery seemed to last fine according the percentage. did not check the GPS.
I would not buy myself a device that requires such an effort braking into just to let use a different carrier, but i’m glad I could help.
Thank’s again.

Tal December 9, 2010, 3:03 pm

The device is an 3G 8GB.

jimiz December 6, 2010, 11:32 pm

I can’t find the ipsw file in the 3G ios 4.2.1 download. Can anyone help? I have looked all over the net and the downloads are all the same. A restore.zip. No ipsw.

zigen December 8, 2010, 8:34 am

just rename the .zip to .ipsw

Yongkers December 17, 2010, 8:03 am

Go to youtube and look for the video on how to convert Zip to ipsw. A few essential steps to be done, not simply convert by word of mouth. YOu have to go to control panel and folder options, “view” and unclick “hide extension for known file types”, then you can change the extension of zip directly to ipsw

giddieup74 December 7, 2010, 1:56 pm

Ok I screwed up, I followed the instructions but when I went to launch the cydia app it would not work. It updated my baseband to 06.15.00 but I stupidly tried to restore using the itunes software to try again. Now my phone is stuck in recovery mode but I can’t restore with itunes because of the baseband. I need help, a newbie that is in over his head

Hi All:
I was able to install the BB 06.15.00 on my Iphone 3GS and IOS 4.2.1 (custom)using redsnow. The problem is that I did not get cydia installed. Can I just run redsnow and install only cydia or I need to do the whole thing again?
Regards

Hello, everyone!I plan to update my iPhone 3G version 3.1.3 to 4.2.1.I would like to know how the iPhone 3G performs with the 4.2.1 version because I’ve heard rumours that the device become very slow after the upgrade. However,I watched a test video in YouTube and everything seems to be normal (without slowing, crashing e.t.c.)It would be good to write what are your views about the upgrade.
Best wishes,rocky50!

najaf December 19, 2010, 7:56 pm

ya it consumes more battery and ur devices will be too slow i do same now im back to 3.1.3 if u wana try then do it but my advice is u will waste ur time…

Jo Torrent December 19, 2010, 7:46 pm

I did exactly as mentioned. The problem is when redsnow starts working. After a certain time the iphone restarts and nothing happens actually.

It is exactly the same as before. Nothing changes at all, not even the slightest thing eventhough I see the iphone screen with “Downloading Jailbreak Data…” written for a certain time but afterwards nothing happens.

Here is what you need to do:
1) Collect the following before you start:
a) Custom ipsw firmware
b) Apple original restore firmware
c) Redsn0w 0.9.6beta5
d) Itunes
2) Connect iphone to PC and Launch Redsn0w as Administrator
3) Browse to your original apple firmware. Click next
4) Make sure you get the “IPSW successfully identified”
5) Select the option “Just enter pwned DFU mode right now”
6) with your iphone 3gs in DFU mode, Launch Itunes
7) When your device is detected, a window will pop up, Close it, to see the restore button
8) Press “Shift + Restore”
9) Browse to your custom ipsw firmware, and let itunes restore your iphone, when done the iphone will restart,
10)After restart, your iphone will remain locked, only emergency call will be allowed. it’s ok.
11) Launch again Redsn0w, so everything as before but this time select “Install Cydia”
12)Follow the instructions to Jailbreak your iphone
13) After Jailbreak, the iphone will be stuck on the Apple logo. It’s ok.
14) Launch Redsn0w again, do the same thing as before, but this time select ” Just boot tethered right now”
15) Follow Redsn0w ‘s instructions until the end.
16) When it will restart jailbroken already. You will see Cydia Wow.
17) To unlock it. Do the Ultrasn0w thing. You can search Youtube to see how to do it.
18)If everything was done correctly you should have an unlocked and jailbroken iphone 3gs.

xlauracx January 14, 2011, 9:09 pm

im wanting to jailbreak my iphone 3g running version 4.2.1 with firmware 05.15.04. It says above about upgrading bandbase

“Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to! Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.”

does that mean unlock service provider? Cos I dont. So do I do it or not?

I too had the problem where an iPhone 3G (16Gb) was stuck in Recovery Mode for almost 2 months after upgrading to OS4.2. Unable to restore the phone to stock OS, I was stumped for a long while.

I finally solved the problem by downgrading to OS 3.1.2 using Tinyumbrella and then upgrading the phone to OS4.1.

Tinyumbrella instructions here:
http://www.iphoneheat.com/2010/07/downgrade-ios-4-to-os-3-1-3-3-1-2-iphone-ipod-touch/

I hope this can be of help to someone.

I Updated my 3gs to 4.2.1 with 6.15 Baseband.
I ran redsn0w and everything worked GREAT.
I synched my phone with the wrong account and wanted to clear my contacts and settings. So I went to restore it and got stuck in a loop.
I tried to restore 4.2.1 in itunes and I get 1015 error.
I did restore phone to 4.1 with 6.15 baseband.
BUT I WANT TO GO BACK TO 4.2.1…. It won’t? IDEAS?
