Twitter Acquires Tweetie, Renamed to Twitter for iPhone, Makes it Free

Twitter announces today that they have acquired the leading iPhone twitter app Tweetie which will be renamed to Twitter for iPhone and will hit the app store coming week with no price tag. The desktop Tweetie client will also become free.

tweetieTwitter also told in the press release that Loren Brichter, the man behind Tweetie, will be joining the Twitter mobile team as a key member. So, it seems like, it’s not just the Tweetie app but the whole company Twitter has acquired.

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve entered into an agreement with Atebits (aka Loren Brichter) to acquire Tweetie, a leading iPhone Twitter client. Tweetie will be renamed Twitter for iPhone and made free (currently $2.99) in the iTunes AppStore in the coming weeks. Loren will become a key member of our mobile team that is already having huge impact with device makers and service providers around the world. Loren’s work won the 2009 Apple Design Award and we will eventually launch Twitter for iPad with his help.

Twitter has also planned the Twitter app for iPad once the Loren is on board. Tweetie is already available for iPhone and Mac, think of future development for other OS like Android, Windows, etc.. Good Luck Loren and Best of Luck TweetDeck ;).. via 9to5mac
