How to Update iPhone 2G to OS 3.0 Without Losing Activation/Unlock

As we all know that Apple has released the latest iPhone OS 3.0 and is available to download via iTunes 8.2. Here comes some important news for all the iPhone 2G (Original iPhone) owners about upgrading their iPhone 2G to OS 3.0 without losing activation and Unlock.

Update:

How to Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 2G OS 3.0 with PwnageTool 3.0 (MAC)

How to Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 2G OS 3.0 with RedSn0w (Windows)

This info is for iPhone 2G, the 1st Gen of iPhone, owners only.

If you connect your iPhone 2G to iTunes and hit update button, your iPhone 2G will be updated to iPhone OS 3.0 WITHOUT losing your Unlock.

However if you’re on an unofficial carrier you will:

  • Lose your iPhone 2G Activation if you used QuickPwn to jailbreak you iPhone 2G. Which means your iPhone will be able to detect the network but you will NOT be able to use your iPhone.
  • Not Lose iPhone 2G Activation if you used f you used PwnageTool to jailbreak you iPhone 2G.

So, now it’s up to you, if you’re much excited about iPhone OS 3.0 and want it to install immediately, just make sure you jailbroke your iPhone with Pwnage Tool or rejailbreak using PwnageTool and then do the update.

Otherwise wait for a little bit more and the iPhone Dev-Team will release new PwnageTool and QuickPwn utilities shortly and this is what we recommend.

i have a 1st generation iphone
2.2.1 firm. and 4.5.05 baseband
if i update 3.0 will it lock it again

iPhone Heat June 18, 2009, 7:12 am

@Jeremy
If you used Pwnage tool to Jailbreak your iPhone then you are good to go. or jailbreak with Pwnage now.

But if it was QuickPwn then hold on until the Dev Team release the updated utilities for OS3.0.

However my recommendations are to hold off until updated Quickpwn and pwnage tool are released.

Hi a stupid question. Cause someone just got me an iphone 2g. How would i know whether it is Jailbreak using Pwnage or QuickPwn. And can someone guide me on how to re-jailbreak iphone.

I am a noob using IPhone.

jeremy June 18, 2009, 8:41 am

blair June 18, 2009, 3:42 pm

Snake Eyes June 18, 2009, 3:47 pm

U people are sick.dont u under stand that.what he said.cheapster

Snake Eyes June 18, 2009, 3:49 pm

Sorry jeremy.bt i think its ur fault.

Alan June 18, 2009, 7:19 pm

@jeremy
I’m having the same issue, because I used QuickPwn.
You can downgrade to 2.x using iTunes 8.0 or 8.1 (8.2 wont work!)
Note that you *must* restore in DFU mode.

Gustavo June 19, 2009, 3:38 am

It Works!!!!

Mark June 19, 2009, 5:01 am

I updated from 2.2 to 3.0 as said above. Phone is activated and i can use it but it won’t connect to the mobile network. So i can’t make/receive phone calls. Is there a quick fix for this or should i downgrade and wait for the jailbreak?

blair June 19, 2009, 2:49 pm

i now have my iphone 2g running 3.0, although youtube does not work
what i did was on a make made a custom ipsw on pwnage tool, then i updated iphone to that, after that had been installed i went into itunes and clicked update iphone and it updated it, it now works great!

Bobby June 19, 2009, 3:23 pm

One question. You said unofficial carrier.
My carrier is authorized to sell iphone in my country. I guess that makes it an official carrier. But I got my iphone from the US and unlocked it using QuickPwn. Can I update directly to 3.0?

Simeon June 19, 2009, 9:48 pm

Hey I know it sounds stupid but could someone please help me downgrade my itunes and also I’m having trouble saving the iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw file because mine keeps saying zip at the end and isnt letting me pull up the information someone please help

ZiadRamman June 22, 2009, 6:01 pm

I used QuickPwn to jailbrake my iphone, What are the necessary steps i must do in order to install 3.0?

ZiadRamman June 22, 2009, 6:02 pm

*edit, 1 more thing, Wats the equivelent of Pwnage Tool for windows? and will it be safe to use if i want 3.0.

iPhone Heat June 22, 2009, 6:05 pm

My USA 2G unlockd & jailbrkn by unknown method with a PC, baseband 04.05.04_G – Cydia 1.0.2797-47 – runs 2.2 with an Official Carrier Prepaid SIM in Europe. This said, could you kindly advise whether I can update to 3 without loosing anything? I.E. apps & data, and remain unlockd/jailbrkn?

Do I need to first update to 2.2.1? I use a MAC + iTune 8.2 it asked whether I wanted to download v.3 – Yes, done! (but I do not see where it went) Update? No thanks. So I’m ready but first need your HELP! Pls note I have no way of knowing how it was unlocked/jailbrkn. Many thanks

Go and update to OS 3.0 and do the fun stuff..

@andi
follow the tip#10 here:

Ted June 28, 2009, 2:58 pm

@iPhone Heat
Great news! Thanks. But pls, one more thing. Is it sure that it will ALSO remain “jailbrkn” ? I have a few CYDIA apps that I would be sorry to loose.
I read elsewhere that making the update all things “unofficial” will be deleted and it will be jailed once again.
Sorry to bother… I appreciate your help and patience. :-)

iPhone Heat June 28, 2009, 3:04 pm

Sorry I didn’t mention that :-(
Yes you will loose them
ans you will need to jailbreak your iPhone after updating

Ted June 28, 2009, 11:59 pm

@iPhone Heat
I felt reassured, so I proceeded to accept the “updating”. It seemed all OK, I would JUST loose the unofficial apps and it will become JAILED once more.

You wrote “If you connect your iPhone 2G to iTunes and hit update button, your iPhone 2G will be updated to iPhone OS 3.0 WITHOUT losing your Unlock.”

Well, WRONG! At the end there was this notice: ” THE SIM CARD IN THIS PHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED ”

- That prepaid SIM card worked well for almost one year. Same with still another one from a different carrier. In other words it was fully unlocked.

Now it can only be used for emergency calls. What to do next? :-(

Ted June 29, 2009, 12:16 am

@iPhone Heat

” THE SIM CARD IN THIS PHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED ”
“Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier’s store to receive a replacement SIM card”.

I still have the original ATT SIM card, but this phone was NEVER “activated”. It was only unlocked/jailbroken and always used with prepaid cards from supported carries. Pls see my previous post and advise what I shall do now. Thanks.

iPhone Heat June 29, 2009, 7:27 pm

@Ted..

don’t worry man..
your iPhone is still unlocked .. check the signals at top left corner of the screen..
Problem is that u can’t activate it if u r on an unofficial carrier.

Here’s the solution:
You need to jailbreak and unlock it using this guide:

Hello, I have a 2G iPhone fully unlocked and jailbroken with OS 1.1.4 (4A102). I never updated the iphone because all the methods I found were too confusing. Now I want to upgrade to 3.0 but am afraid to mess it up if I go directly to 3. I read some posts saying that it must be on OS 2.x before trying to upgrade to 3.0. Is it true?

iPhone Heat August 16, 2009, 4:17 am

@Luis..
Simply update to OS 3.0..
Then use redsn0w to jailbreak and unlock it

Hi, I have an unlocked and jailbroken 2G thats originally from Europe, which I am currently using here in Canada. It’s running on 2.2.1 and I was wondering how I would go about upgrading the firmware to 3.1.2? I’ve used blackra1n to jailbreak my other iphone, a 3Gs, and was wondering if I could use the same for the 2G? Any suggestions and/or help would be appreciated. Thanks

mags March 23, 2010, 3:08 am

I have a question- I hope I am not repeating it. I have an older iphone- I think the first generation I bought from a friend. I simply put my ATT sim card in it and it always worked fine ( no data plan- I just use WIFI). Would it be OK if I updated the 3.0 firmware? I really appreciate your response- Maggie

iPhoneHeat March 23, 2010, 3:43 pm

if you’ve iPhone 2G then go for 3.1.3 straight :) via iTunes or firmware can be found under iPhone firmwares category

mags April 2, 2010, 5:35 am

Thank you – I looked on my settings menu- it says enable 3G so I guess it is 3G- can I still do the firmware update? Sorry for the dummy questions!

Hello. Could someone help.

I have the original 2g phone that was unlocked with QuickPwn. So as per above I have waited some time to upgrade my phone. Is there now an updated Quickpwn for me to use or is there another way for me to upgrade to a modern version of code. As you will imagine I cannot use hardly any apps now as its so out of date.

Sorry if i’m asking basic questions but dont want to screw my phone up.

greatly appreciated, best regards

i have an unlocked iphone 2G but it was unlocked in a store so i dont know what software they used. i was wondering if, since it has been 3 years, there is a way to upgrade toe phone without loosing the jailbreak. i have heard that if i update it i would loose the jailbreak and if i try to re-jailbreak then the camera or something in the phone would stop working. i really need help because itunes and youtube no longer work on the phone, and neither do cydia or installer. the phone has rendered useless and i really want to update it. please help me because it seems no one can.
