How to Update iPhone 2G to OS 3.0 Without Losing Activation/Unlock

As we all know that Apple has released the latest iPhone OS 3.0 and is available to download via iTunes 8.2. Here comes some important news for all the iPhone 2G (Original iPhone) owners about upgrading their iPhone 2G to OS 3.0 without losing activation and Unlock.

Update:

How to Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 2G OS 3.0 with PwnageTool 3.0 (MAC)

How to Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 2G OS 3.0 with RedSn0w (Windows)

This info is for iPhone 2G, the 1st Gen of iPhone, owners only.

If you connect your iPhone 2G to iTunes and hit update button, your iPhone 2G will be updated to iPhone OS 3.0 WITHOUT losing your Unlock.

However if you’re on an unofficial carrier you will:

  • Lose your iPhone 2G Activation if you used QuickPwn to jailbreak you iPhone 2G. Which means your iPhone will be able to detect the network but you will NOT be able to use your iPhone.
  • Not Lose iPhone 2G Activation if you used f you used PwnageTool to jailbreak you iPhone 2G.

So, now it’s up to you, if you’re much excited about iPhone OS 3.0 and want it to install immediately, just make sure you jailbroke your iPhone with Pwnage Tool or rejailbreak using PwnageTool and then do the update.

Otherwise wait for a little bit more and the iPhone Dev-Team will release new PwnageTool and QuickPwn utilities shortly and this is what we recommend.

    i have a 1st generation iphone
    2.2.1 firm. and 4.5.05 baseband
    if i update 3.0 will it lock it again

  2. iPhone Heat 18 June 2009 at 7:12 am #

    @Jeremy
    If you used Pwnage tool to Jailbreak your iPhone then you are good to go. or jailbreak with Pwnage now.

    But if it was QuickPwn then hold on until the Dev Team release the updated utilities for OS3.0.

    However my recommendations are to hold off until updated Quickpwn and pwnage tool are released.

  7. Snake Eyes 18 June 2009 at 3:49 pm #

  8. Alan 18 June 2009 at 7:19 pm #

    @jeremy
    I’m having the same issue, because I used QuickPwn.
    You can downgrade to 2.x using iTunes 8.0 or 8.1 (8.2 wont work!)
    Note that you *must* restore in DFU mode.

  9. Gustavo 19 June 2009 at 3:38 am #

    It Works!!!!

  10. Mark 19 June 2009 at 5:01 am #

    I updated from 2.2 to 3.0 as said above. Phone is activated and i can use it but it won’t connect to the mobile network. So i can’t make/receive phone calls. Is there a quick fix for this or should i downgrade and wait for the jailbreak?

  11. blair 19 June 2009 at 2:49 pm #

    i now have my iphone 2g running 3.0, although youtube does not work
    what i did was on a make made a custom ipsw on pwnage tool, then i updated iphone to that, after that had been installed i went into itunes and clicked update iphone and it updated it, it now works great!

  12. Bobby 19 June 2009 at 3:23 pm #

    One question. You said unofficial carrier.
    My carrier is authorized to sell iphone in my country. I guess that makes it an official carrier. But I got my iphone from the US and unlocked it using QuickPwn. Can I update directly to 3.0?

  13. Simeon 19 June 2009 at 9:48 pm #

    Hey I know it sounds stupid but could someone please help me downgrade my itunes and also I’m having trouble saving the iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw file because mine keeps saying zip at the end and isnt letting me pull up the information someone please help

    My USA 2G unlockd & jailbrkn by unknown method with a PC, baseband 04.05.04_G – Cydia 1.0.2797-47 – runs 2.2 with an Official Carrier Prepaid SIM in Europe. This said, could you kindly advise whether I can update to 3 without loosing anything? I.E. apps & data, and remain unlockd/jailbrkn?

    Do I need to first update to 2.2.1? I use a MAC + iTune 8.2 it asked whether I wanted to download v.3 – Yes, done! (but I do not see where it went) Update? No thanks. So I’m ready but first need your HELP! Pls note I have no way of knowing how it was unlocked/jailbrkn. Many thanks

  24. Ted 28 June 2009 at 2:58 pm #

    @iPhone Heat
    Great news! Thanks. But pls, one more thing. Is it sure that it will ALSO remain “jailbrkn” ? I have a few CYDIA apps that I would be sorry to loose.
    I read elsewhere that making the update all things “unofficial” will be deleted and it will be jailed once again.
    Sorry to bother… I appreciate your help and patience. :-)

  25. iPhone Heat 28 June 2009 at 3:04 pm #

    Sorry I didn’t mention that :-(
    Yes you will loose them
    ans you will need to jailbreak your iPhone after updating

  26. Ted 28 June 2009 at 11:59 pm #

    @iPhone Heat
    I felt reassured, so I proceeded to accept the “updating”. It seemed all OK, I would JUST loose the unofficial apps and it will become JAILED once more.

    You wrote “If you connect your iPhone 2G to iTunes and hit update button, your iPhone 2G will be updated to iPhone OS 3.0 WITHOUT losing your Unlock.”

    Well, WRONG! At the end there was this notice: ” THE SIM CARD IN THIS PHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED ”

    - That prepaid SIM card worked well for almost one year. Same with still another one from a different carrier. In other words it was fully unlocked.

    Now it can only be used for emergency calls. What to do next? :-(

  27. Ted 29 June 2009 at 12:16 am #

    @iPhone Heat

    ” THE SIM CARD IN THIS PHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED ”
    “Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier’s store to receive a replacement SIM card”.

    I still have the original ATT SIM card, but this phone was NEVER “activated”. It was only unlocked/jailbroken and always used with prepaid cards from supported carries. Pls see my previous post and advise what I shall do now. Thanks.

  28. iPhone Heat 29 June 2009 at 7:27 pm #

    @Ted..

    don’t worry man..
    your iPhone is still unlocked .. check the signals at top left corner of the screen..
    Problem is that u can’t activate it if u r on an unofficial carrier.

    Here’s the solution:
    You need to jailbreak and unlock it using this guide:

    Hello, I have a 2G iPhone fully unlocked and jailbroken with OS 1.1.4 (4A102). I never updated the iphone because all the methods I found were too confusing. Now I want to upgrade to 3.0 but am afraid to mess it up if I go directly to 3. I read some posts saying that it must be on OS 2.x before trying to upgrade to 3.0. Is it true?

    • iPhone Heat 16 August 2009 at 4:17 am #

      @Luis..
      Simply update to OS 3.0..
      Then use redsn0w to jailbreak and unlock it

    Hi, I have an unlocked and jailbroken 2G thats originally from Europe, which I am currently using here in Canada. It’s running on 2.2.1 and I was wondering how I would go about upgrading the firmware to 3.1.2? I’ve used blackra1n to jailbreak my other iphone, a 3Gs, and was wondering if I could use the same for the 2G? Any suggestions and/or help would be appreciated. Thanks

    I have a question- I hope I am not repeating it. I have an older iphone- I think the first generation I bought from a friend. I simply put my ATT sim card in it and it always worked fine ( no data plan- I just use WIFI). Would it be OK if I updated the 3.0 firmware? I really appreciate your response- Maggie

    • iPhoneHeat 23 March 2010 at 3:43 pm #
