Internet Tethering
For those who don’t know what internet tethering is, it basically allows you to connect to WiFi or 3G on your laptop through your iPhone by turning your iPhone into a “modem”.
The most disappointing announcement made at the WWDC 2009 Keynote is the non-availability of MMS and internet tethering feature in U.S at the launch of iPhone OS 3.0.
But you know the mouse and cat play!! Some clever folks out there, figured out a way to enable tethering on iPhone OS 3.0 via iPhone Safari browser without Jailbreaking iPhone. and the best thing is, it’s the best and most easiest way to enable tethering on iPhone OS 3.0.
The idea behind this little hack to enable tethering on the iPhone OS 3.0 is to download a carrier specific .ipcc and update your iPhone using it via iTunes. Thanks to iPhone Safari browser that makes the procedure ever simpler.
How to Enable Tethering on iPhone OS 3.0
- Point your iPhone Safari Browser to
http://help.benm.at/help.php
- Then click on Mobileconfigs on that page:
- There you will find a list of countries which contains several iPhone tethering configuration files for many carriers. Select your country from the list.
- On the next page select your Provider.
- Tap on the Install button
- Popup will appear. Hit the Install Now button.
- Tap the Done button
- Finally, go to
Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet Tethering
That’s it. But the way this hack has spread, I won’t be surprised if AT&T clamps down on it soon so enjoy it till it works. and as always, don’t forget to drop comment on how it went for you.
Happy Tethering!!!

Can you please provide a tethering profile for Orange in the UK. I have a 2G iPhone running 3.0. Looking forward…. cheers
i have iphone 2G from USA buy 10.2007
but i am from slovakia its problem but my country is not in your country list
Hi,
I’m hvg iPhone 2g os 3.0 & jailbroken. I tried installing the tethering profile from above mentioned URL. Didn’t find Internet tethering option showing up in network. Any idea y?
The laptop doesn’t see my 3GS after following all the above steps:(( Any thoughts please?
I have not seen anyone notice this yet:
While Tethering did and still does work with this and with iTunes 8.2.1, mDNSResponder (Bonjour) started connecting to a new (and suspicious) IP:
192.1.20.0/subnet 255.255.255.0
Furthermore, after disconnecting my iPhone and connecting my computer via bluetooth and iPhone 3G, it is now showing this new configuration on the BlueTooth adapter:
C:\>ipconfig /all

I ran whois against those DNS servers etc, and they are all AT&T-related. I do not remember the old DNS Suffix/gateway/assigned IP/etc, but I recall that they were random IPs that were similar (or the same) as the ones assigned via the 3G network. (You can see your assigned 3G address with an app such as iStat or on several sites.)
Without undue paranoia, since the 3G address is now different than the tethering address, is it possible that AT&T is now tracking users who are using tethering?
Orange UK users: you can do a manual config via the web page above. APN orangeinternet : User user : Password pass . you will have to do manual changes for the mms settings but they are easy to find on the internet also.
Hi, I have down loaded 3.0 to my 3g iPhone. I have t-mobile but have not connected the phone I use it for wi-fi only. Tried doing the tether thing
and could not go any further when asked to install. It ask to replace or cancel! Should I have my iPhone connected to my Mac? Thx FG
In the uk you don’t download the config.you create it and enter the same network settings etc,payandgo.o2.co.uk,vertigo,password then press tethering on at the bottom, then press generate.a new page will come up,install it(the profile).this is only for pay and go customers, and make sure when you put in payandgo.o2.co.uk,vertigo etc it starts with a small letters and not capital which it will try and do.or it will only work for a few days.any questions e-mail me at “[email protected]” only in the uk.yours jamie
thanks,yours jamie
Hi,
Got up to picking my provider and then got a pop up ” Restricted URL”
This URL wasn’t loaded: prefs:root=General&path=ManagedConfigurationList/InstallRequested&sender=com.apple.mobilesafari
Thanks!!
Anybody know how to configure this for Vodafone Ireland ? Only option presented is for O2 at the moment…
After installing the “profile” and then going to Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet Tethering …the Internet Tethering option is not there.
