Can anyone confirm, or deny that this release locks devices to 3.0, and therefore making it impossible to go back to 2.x.x ??

  6. Victor 9 June 2009 at 8:54 pm #

Can you confirm what it means or what I can expect if my phone/ipod touch is locked into a test mode forever? Does that mean that any future updates will not be accepted by the devices? Or simply that it is impossible to downgrade to an earlier OS?

  7. iPhone Heat 9 June 2009 at 8:59 pm #

The only thing that I can tell you is that.. Apple issue the similar warning with all the betas, but all of them were downgradable.

If you’re an adventurer one, go give it a shot and let us know

@Mario, How/With what program did you get those 3 packages on your iPod? I mean, do you use all three packages?

Then another question, think it’s pretty dumb, but you can’t jailbreak this one yet?

  24. lemon pie 11 June 2009 at 3:09 am #

  25. iPhone Help 11 June 2009 at 9:15 am #

I’ve tested this out (Gold Master) & i was able to downgrade back to 2.2.1

  26. Mario 11 June 2009 at 2:04 pm #

@Peter, I assume you are talking about the 3 individual packages iPhone Heat has made available for each version of the Touch family…
The 3 packages, depending on the version of your device, are actually parts of a single file. You download the 3 files for your specific iPod touch/iPhone and then use a decompressing program, something like UnRarX on the Mac.
If you’re using Windows, use WinRAR.
The result after decompressing all the files, is a .ipsw file… that roughly means IPhone SoftWare…
So, to actually install it on your device, is a little trickier… but this is the best and fastest way to do it…
**WARNING**: THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR DEVICE… so backup everything before you do this… you can recover the exact state of your device with the ‘iPod Backup” feature on iTunes after the 3.0 OS is installed.
First and foremost, you NEED to put your device on DFU mode…
This is a modality that every touch device from Apple includes to recover any iPhone/iPod touch from serious damage to the Operating System, among other things…
To do this, is a little hard, and requires a little practice, but once you understand it, it’s not hard at all…
First of all, connect your device to your computer…
Wait for iTunes to recognize it, and click “Eject”… but DO NOT disconnect the USB cable from your Mac/PC…
Then, and here’s the tricky part, click the power button, AND the Home button on your device AT THE SAME TIME… and count to 11… then, release the power button and KEEP holding the Home button, it takes 8-11 seconds… until iTunes opens again…
iTunes it’s gonna say “iTunes has detected an iPod on recovery mode, you need to restore it on order to use it.”
Or something like that… I forget the exact words…
And here’s when you install the file you just downloaded from here, iPhone Heat…
There are gonna be 2 buttons, “Check for updates”, and “Recover” or something…
If you are on a Mac, click the “Option” key, don’t let go, and now click with your mouse/trackpad on the second button, “Recover”… and a file selection window will appear… you point to wherever you decompressed the “.IPSW” file, and click “Ok”…
And that’s it!! Wait until iTunes tells you that your device is rebooting…
Once it reboots, you’ll have the 3.0 software running in all it’s glory… =P
If you’re on a Windows machine, the procedure is exactly the same… except that the “Option” key is replaced with the right shift key of your keyboard… so… Click left shift, and while holding it, click with your mouse/trackpad, on the second button…
    I hope this helps someone…
    Sorry for the long post!

Great tutorial, this message is sended from my OS 3.0 iPod touch :) Still, i’ve got one question: how do you jailbreak OS 3.0? It doesn’t matter which version, so if you only know about the beta’s, it’s also good.

  28. Tim 11 June 2009 at 5:54 pm #

I get an error message saying my firmware is not compatible, any suggestions?

  29. Cameron 12 June 2009 at 3:29 am #

To all users downloading this file. There is absolutely no way apple can stop you downgrading. If you ever want to downgrade to any firmware, put your device in DFU mode (google it) and just restore to the firmware you want. Apple currently have no control over the firmwares used in DFU, as the mode is locked into the hardware.

  30. Cameron 12 June 2009 at 5:30 am #

Search this forum in the 3.9 Jailbreak section, there should be a sticky that helps you Jailbreak iPod Touch 1G, iPhone 2G and 3G only. At the moment, the dev team is yet to release an official iPod Touch 2G 3.0 Jailbreak.

  31. Mario 12 June 2009 at 7:41 am #

@Peter, Thank you, man! Good to hear it worked for you! =)
And, about the Jailbreak, unfortunately, Cameron is right… if you have a 2nd Generation iPod Touch, there isn’t an official way to jailbreak the 2nd Gen iPod Touch… not even on OS 2.2.1
So, If your iPod touch is a second gen, we’re out of luck! I have one too.
There is, however, a way to jailbreak every other Apple device, even the ones using OS 3.0… it’s a beta, mind you, but apparently it works.
Like Cameron says, search the Jailbreak section on the forums to get the pertinent files.

@Tim, That happens when you get a firmware file that does not belong to your device…
Be sure to know exactly what kind of device you own.
Remember, the 1st Gen iPhone, had an aluminum back with a black plastic bottom.
The iPhone 3G, has an-all plastic back, either in black or white.
The 1st Gen iPod Touch you can recognize by looking at the trim around the screen part.. it had a black anodized aluminum trim, and on the back, the WiFi antenna IS the right top corner… meaning, the whole corner is black plastic.
Now, the 2nd Gen iPod Touch, is slimmer, has no metallic trim, and the antenna position is not on the corner anymore. It’s located a little lower, and has an oval shape.
So, be sure to recognize your correct device, download the appropriate file, and try again!

Any news about jailbreaking ipod touch 2nd gen on 3.0 7a341GM?I want my apps back!!!hehe

  33. Mario 12 June 2009 at 7:54 am #

Sorry. I forgot to mention, the instant way to know if you have a 1st or 2nd Gen iPod touch, just look on the left side of your device… if you have volume controls, you have a 2nd Gen iPod Touch.
Now, maybe the naming scheme iPhone Heat is using, is causing perhaps a little confusion…
When they say “iPhone 3G” they mean the 2nd Gen iPhone… with the plastic back.
And, when the say “iPhone 2G”, they mean actually iPhone 1st Generation, the one with the aluminum and black plastic back… the “2G” comes from the name of the cellular network the 1st Gen uses, unlike the second generation iPhone, which uses 3G networks… technically it can, and does depending on your location, use 2G networks too, but the big feature is of course the use of the faster, more reliable 3G networks… hence the name “iPhone 3G”
    =P
    I hope this helps!

Just tried this on my iPod touch 2G. There’s no need to erase and restore when updating the iPod. In iTunes, just shift click (on Windows) or option click on the Update button (instead of Restore, which will erase your iPod). A dialog box will appear for you to select the update file for 3.0 GM, this process will NOT erase your iPod.
