How to Unlock iPhone 3G with YellowSn0w | Step-by-Step Guide
In this iPhone tutorial, we will guide you on how to unlock iPhone 3G to make use of all carriers’ SIM card on your iPhone.
This guide is for iPhone 3G users ONLY. iPhone 2G users: Learn How to Unlock iPhone 2G.
Update for iPhone OS 3.0:
Prerequisites
You must Jailbreak your iPhone 3G in order to unlock it.
Your iPhone modem firmware (Baseband) must be on 2.28 which means you must be running iPhone Firmware 2.2 and in case of 2.2.1 it must be updated using PwnageTool (Not QuickPWN) that keeps Baseband at 2.28. Baseband at 2.28 is a must to have in order to follow this guide.
Learn How to check your iPhone Baseband version. If your iPhone Baseband version is 2.28 then you’re good to go. In Baseband 2.30 case, if your Bootloader version is 5.8 then you can downgrade Baseband from 2.30 to 2.28 and then Unlock your iPhone using this Guide.

If you are on Baseband 2.30 and your iPhone Bootloader is NOT 5.8 then only hack available for you at the moment is to Jailbreak your iPhone 3G.

- Use this guide and try Quickpwn at your own risk.
Step 1
Launch the Cydia from your iPhone SpringBoard.
Step 2
Go to Manage tab available at the bottom.
Then Press the large Sources button.
Step 3
Press the Edit button available at the top right corner.
Then Press Add button available at the Top left side of the screen.
Step 4
Enter http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com as the Cydia/APT URL and press the Add Source button.
When adding Source process is complete, Press the big Return to Cydia button.
Step 5
Hit the Done button at the top right.
Step 6
Now Tap to select apt9.yellowsn0w.com from the list of sources.
Now select Yellowsn0w from the list of available packages.
Step 7
Now press Install button from the top right corner.
Then press Confirm from Top Right to Begin Installation.
Step 8
When you’re done with the installation, Press the big Return to Cydia Button.
Step 9
Press the Home button to return to SprinBoard. Then Hold down the power button for 3 seconds, a Power slider will appear . Slide to Power OFF your iPhone 3G. Now again turn your iPhone 3G ON.
Enjoy the SIM of your Choice in your unlocked iPhone 3G.
* USEFUL HINTS *
If iPhone hasn’t detected your new carrier, try these:
- turning off 3G
- Toggling the Airplane Mode ON and OFF
Still out of Luck? Try reinserting your SIM card or insert a new SIM. or try resetting your Network Setting from Settings > General > Reset Menu
Still Having Trouble?
After trying above mention hints if you’re still out of luck/having troubles, you can simply uninstall Yellowsn0w from
Cydia > Manage > Packages.
Reboot after uninstalling. Your iPhone 3G will be back to normal locked condition.
